I was thinking about this today. The two best I could come up with were "SOS" by Rihanna and "Lose Control" by Missy. I wanted to know what you guys thought.

Steve (Not Stevie) (Stevie D), Monday, 6 October 2008 05:51 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think it's a sample exactly, but i loved t.i.'s use of gypsy woman

jaime, Monday, 6 October 2008 06:20 (sixteen years ago)

Alicia Keys' "You Don't Know My Name"... that Main Ingredient sample is used brilliantly.

After The Hurricane (The Brainwasher), Monday, 6 October 2008 06:36 (sixteen years ago)

xp YES!!! I totally forgot about that one! That's my absolute favorite T.I. song. Well, it's the only one I like really, but I really really love it.

Steve (Not Stevie) (Stevie D), Monday, 6 October 2008 06:44 (sixteen years ago)

Good use of sampling would be to do it in a way where the origin cannot be traced. Which means "SOS" is not a good example.

Interesting to see if this thread or the "fussy eaters" one on ILX makes it to clusterfuck levels first.

Girls on Top - I Wanna Dance With Numbers.

The best sampling isn't always where you can't tell where it comes from - it's about recontexualisation which is a totally valid form of strategy in art today. I mean Geir, do you think less of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead because it doesn't bother to invent two new characters and instead borrows them from Shakespear?

Treblekicker, Monday, 6 October 2008 10:15 (sixteen years ago)

Conway - "Lisa's Got Hives" (mashup of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes' "The Block Party" and The Hives - "Hate To Say I Told You So")

jabba hands, Monday, 6 October 2008 10:34 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno. Where do you draw the line? Is Puff Daddy's I'll Be Missing You a mash up or sampling?

I suppose if I was being stricter I'd say, Matmos - The West

Treblekicker, Monday, 6 October 2008 10:36 (sixteen years ago)

Pepe Bradock - Deep Burnt

I refuse to accept recontexualisation.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 6 October 2008 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, what I would consider creating sampling is when you take a sound, take it through various sound changing processes and create an entirely different new sound where it is impossible to trace the origin. Like the snare drum on Yello's "Drive/Driven", which was apparently originally a result of snowballs being thrown towards a wall, which is of course impossible to hear.

Sampling loops of a hook from an old hit is something I have always despised, if you can't compose good hooks yourself, then stay out music!

Can someone cite for Geir a list of prog and 60s/70s melodic pop/rock songs that feature blatant recontextualizing quotations from classical or earlier pop musics? I'm not enough of a wonk to do it, but there have to be just dozens.

I meant sampling riffs or loops for bits from other songs, ones that you can recognize and have successfully recontextualized the piece into a new form

Well it happens whether you like it or not.

Let's face it, if you don't know it's happening as the sound source is warped out of all recognition then you aren't going to know (unless you have insider muso knowledge) and this would be a short thread.

Treblekicker, Monday, 6 October 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

I like Richard X when he uses less obvious sources, or completely original material. The one based on Shakatak was my least favourite track on the Annie CD.

It is different when you don't steal and try to take the honour for it. Those were either cover versions or so melodically changed they were not the same thing anymore.

How do you know when someone is trying to take the honour for it?

Granny Dainger, Monday, 6 October 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

Well, at least people have started crediting the original people behind. But sampling still remains a problem because, along with too many cover versions, it keeps new songs away from people's attention. The world needs more songs. New songs, that people can sing along to, and that will become standards and be sung by generations and generations to come. The past 20 years have brought fewer new singalong friendly songs than the 60s, 70s and 80s did and that is a problem.

Treblekicker, Monday, 6 October 2008 22:09 (sixteen years ago)

Music is about songs. Songs are our cultural heritage. The world needs new "Yesterday"s and "Hey Jude"s.

Cultural heritage is a lot richer that a few Beatles songs Geir.

Well, obviously there are a lot of Tin Pan Alley songs in there too, for instance. And also some recent ones. But there are two criteria they need for getting part of the "song canon": 1. They need to be easy to singalong to and 2. A large number of people need to know them.
