Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 10:07 (sixteen years ago)

Call them "Spare copies for knocking round the car" if you have them already...

Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 10:07 (sixteen years ago)

I only have "Power, Corruption and Lies" on pre-recorded tape!

Tom D says "...get them fuckin' up here, ya fuckin' walloper!" (Tom D.), Monday, 6 October 2008 10:23 (sixteen years ago)

with "KW1" instead of what they eventually called it?

I have that one (as well as the CD)

Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

All fine and dandy but the New Order album got a bells'n'whistles rerelease a week ago! Seems a weird time to give people a gratis copy

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Monday, 6 October 2008 10:47 (sixteen years ago)

I wondered that.

Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 10:57 (sixteen years ago)

CANNOT DECIDE.

Wed, Thurs and Fri all too good to make a rational choice.

There are other New Order albums I like better than PCL. But... Psychocandy! Ocean Rain! How can I choose? Oh god, my youth!

OH GOD THE TIMES OLD STODGY CONSERVATIVE PAPER IS NOW MARKETED TO PEOPLE MY AGE ON THE BASIS OF MY YOUTH THAT MEANS I'M OLD ARGH ARGH MAKE IT STOP!!!!

Cat Concern Charity Shop (Masonic Boom), Monday, 6 October 2008 11:03 (sixteen years ago)

ah, but the Times has changed also.

(prob)

Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:20 (sixteen years ago)

haha. i have none of these but there are two i'm potentially interested in hearing at some point so i might buy wed and thu.

lex pretend, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:21 (sixteen years ago)

I don't understand why 4/6ths of these seminal albums are from one scene / 8 year period, and why a third of them are BY THE SAME BAND (who aren't even all that great).

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 October 2008 11:24 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah, forgot I made a poll, (it's just a nice list feature, really), should pick one I suppose.

Hmm. Not the doors, not the echos, Not Joy Div.

Leaving NewOrder, J&MC, Love.

Well, one of these albums came along just as I discovered the Velvet Underground, and saved me from continuing down the Style Council path into 'Acid Jazz' and Sade style blandness. Actually, that would never have happened anyway.

But, Psychocandy it is.

New Order and Love both did similar saving of my soul, but the gold meddle goes.

Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:26 (sixteen years ago)

xpost we are all hanging on yr hearing of Oddessey...

Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:27 (sixteen years ago)

I don't understand why 4/6ths of these seminal albums are from one scene / 8 year period, and why a third of them are BY THE SAME BAND (who aren't even all that great).

Demographics.

Because, essentially the Times is trying to market itself to people my age and just older. And that eight year period is when we came of age/got into music and we still have Pavlovian dog responses to those albums/artists.

I hate being freaking marketed to.

Cat Concern Charity Shop (Masonic Boom), Monday, 6 October 2008 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

I predict the Lex will HATE psychocandy. Like, really genuinely loathe it. He might like PCL, though I'd think he'd prefer something like Brotherhood instead.

Cat Concern Charity Shop (Masonic Boom), Monday, 6 October 2008 11:29 (sixteen years ago)

Because, essentially the Times is trying to market itself to people my age and just older

I think that this thing might actually be cunningly timed to coincide with universities going back and students possibly buying a regular newspaper for themselves for the first time.

NickB, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:30 (sixteen years ago)

I mean why waste money giving free copies of stuff we've already got to people of our age?

NickB, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:31 (sixteen years ago)

I'm kind of interested in whether Lex would like Forever Changes. I have no idea.

Matt DC, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:43 (sixteen years ago)

But yeah Forever Changes > Power, Corruption & Lies > Closer > Psychocandy >>>>>>> Bunnymen >>>>>> Doors. I have never understood the appeal of Echo & The Bunnymen.

Matt DC, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:45 (sixteen years ago)

Of course you don't, Matt. You are not and have never been a hystrionic teenage girl.

Cat Concern Charity Shop (Masonic Boom), Monday, 6 October 2008 11:46 (sixteen years ago)

But yeah, it is totally obviously aimed at first-year students.

Matt DC, Monday, 6 October 2008 11:46 (sixteen years ago)

Phew, I feel better then.

Cat Concern Charity Shop (Masonic Boom), Monday, 6 October 2008 11:48 (sixteen years ago)

I thought I'd never heard Forever Changes but just remembered I have it somewhere. Closer is the best album in this poll though. PCL is their electro album effectively so I could see Lex getting on board with that

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Monday, 6 October 2008 11:48 (sixteen years ago)

Forever Changes brutally mauls everything else in this list, bar, possibly, Ocean Rain. For me.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 October 2008 12:05 (sixteen years ago)

Psychocandy.

jim, Monday, 6 October 2008 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

I've only heard two of these albums all the way through; the rest, i've got my fixes of those bands from best-ofs and so on.

Based on these facts, I'm voting for Forever Changes, just because Psychocandy is by no means my favourite JAMC album.

Kudos to The Cure('s label) for not getting involved in this tawdry debacle.

CharlieNo4, Monday, 6 October 2008 12:47 (sixteen years ago)

But yeah, it is totally obviously aimed at first-year students

exactly. and, you know, tuesday is my favourite album of all-time ever; thursday is up there; friday hasn't aged so well but, you know, what the fuck; monday and wednesday i've not listened to in ages but each sparked a minor obsession in its own way.

good job i'm a student again, probably.

oh, and sunday can fuck right off.

right, we all start when the drum machine starts, lads (grimly fiendish), Monday, 6 October 2008 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

given that charlie's posting here too, i should probably point out that i've no idea why i hyphenated "all time" in that context. force of habit, i suppose.

right, we all start when the drum machine starts, lads (grimly fiendish), Monday, 6 October 2008 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

I kept waiting for you to get to the bit where you went "Friday I'm in love...."

Cat Concern Charity Shop (Masonic Boom), Monday, 6 October 2008 12:53 (sixteen years ago)

and Sunday's gone.

Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 12:57 (sixteen years ago)

bit gutting if you recently bought one of these albums (as i did).

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 6 October 2008 12:58 (sixteen years ago)

These versions will come in shitty card slipcases though.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 October 2008 13:02 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, so they can knock around your glove compartment and get messed up, and you're not spoiling your lovely Deluxe packaging/extraCD versions...

Mark G, Monday, 6 October 2008 13:06 (sixteen years ago)

Good point.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 October 2008 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

I'm looking at that list and wondering if there's going to be a readers' offer of a raincoat in next Saturday's paper.

NickB, Monday, 6 October 2008 13:09 (sixteen years ago)

I kept waiting for you to get to the bit where you went "Friday I'm in love...."

bollocks. a great opportunity missed :)

right, we all start when the drum machine starts, lads (grimly fiendish), Monday, 6 October 2008 13:10 (sixteen years ago)

I went down to wh smiths just to get forever changes for my dads car.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 6 October 2008 15:06 (sixteen years ago)

That Doors album is pretty good.

o. nate, Monday, 6 October 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

Oh hey, I totally should have voted Closer.

jim, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

i thought today's free album with The Times was Love - can someone confirm what today's offer is?

djmartian, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

the order given in the culture magazine with sunday times was totally wrong !

answer: today Joy Division

djmartian, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

I don't have that on CD

Tom D asks, "Are we in love like I think we be?" (Tom D.), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

See, I missed out on the "Free Love" owing to complications.

So, do I save my vouchers and send off, (£1.99), just phone now and buy them (£5.99), or get my free psychocandy as I'm away from home and could use some candy talking but that won't be on it wont it never mind it's just a figure of speech...

Mark G, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

Irrelevant question that has allways bugged me:
Anyone know if these CDs and any other free newspaper cds are normal quality cds or just mp3s burned onto a cd after the newspaper has obtained permission?...

truncated (Maxemillian), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

the wind is screaming through the trees for my..

OK, so that one isn't on there either, but still....

Someone go back in time to 1985 and tell them "One day, WH Smiths will give this album free with copies of "The Times" " and you too could sound like (insert metacritic from NME name here)

Mark G, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 09:01 (sixteen years ago)

So what day is PCL out on? Would be handy to have this on CD.

Discordian, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 11:05 (sixteen years ago)

Thursday:

Thursday - New Order: Power Corruption and Lies
Friday - Echo and the Bunnymen: Ocean Rain

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/commercial/article4867507.ece

djmartian, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

Am thinking I would like PCL on CD too, at least until I get around to buying the remasters!

Neil S, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 11:16 (sixteen years ago)

I have my "Love" - (wee oot)...

And my psychocandy.

Life is good.

Mark G, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 12:01 (sixteen years ago)

I can't believe I just managed to make a choice.

I voted for THE BERNARD.

C M Y Kate (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

There is BERNARD in the shops now.

Mark G, Thursday, 9 October 2008 08:11 (sixteen years ago)

Must remember to buy this today

Tom D asks, "Are we in love like I think we be?" (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

rupert murdoch thanks you all kindly.

easy, lionel (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 9 October 2008 08:43 (sixteen years ago)

Nice of him, not such a bad chap after all

Tom D asks, "Are we in love like I think we be?" (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 08:48 (sixteen years ago)

Human League and Paul Young are better than most of these. Anyway, "Forever Changes" is great of course.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 9 October 2008 09:02 (sixteen years ago)

All fine and dandy but the New Order album got a bells'n'whistles rerelease a week ago! Seems a weird time to give people a gratis copy

Pretty certain it is the old un-remastered version.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 9 October 2008 09:03 (sixteen years ago)

odd:

All the tracks are copyright Centredale ltd, except for 5-8-6 which is copyright Factory Records!

Hmmmmmm...m.mmmmmmmmm

Mark G, Thursday, 9 October 2008 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

You can only get the CD in WH Smiths?

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 12:57 (sixteen years ago)

yes

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 October 2008 12:59 (sixteen years ago)

All the tracks are copyright Centredale ltd, except for 5-8-6 which is copyright Factory Records!

what the fuck? i assume that was the same with all the london/centredate (it's date, isn't it?) re-releases. i don't have any of those, though </snob>. can anyone check?

easy, lionel (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 9 October 2008 13:05 (sixteen years ago)

Echo and the Bunnymen today, and so it ends...

Mark G, Friday, 10 October 2008 10:25 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 12 October 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Well, I played four of these on the drive back on Friday, and a joltime it was.

The ones I didn't:
Closer- wanted toget home cheerful
Strange Days- didn't have it with me.

Found I was pondering my vote, but after playing, realised I voted correctly. Psychocandy.

Mark G, Monday, 13 October 2008 07:17 (sixteen years ago)

If the Doors lived and died as cut-out bin unknowns Strange Days would be worshipped by just about every serious rock/punk/indie fan on the planet. Great album. It's either that or Forever Changes for me. Probably the former.

QuantumNoise, Monday, 13 October 2008 12:09 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 13 October 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Blimey, is that the time?

Mark G, Monday, 13 October 2008 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

poor ocean rain

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 13 October 2008 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

Really expected Psychocandy to fare better. Still 0 for Ocean rain seems about right.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 08:22 (sixteen years ago)

In this company, it could only fare so.

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 08:24 (sixteen years ago)

If the Doors lived and died as cut-out bin unknowns Strange Days would be worshipped by just about every serious rock/punk/indie fan on the planet. Great album.

OTM. I think it probably suffered a bit from a split vote with Love for the '60s rock fans. Forever Changes is a great album, no question, but Strange Days is not far behind.

o. nate, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

The Times shoud do this again sometime!
