I'm making a mix CD for a lady that is spooky/halloween themed AND romantic. Is it possible?

OK so I'm in this budding relationship with a woman I've known for a while and I'm trying to make her a cute mix that is Halloween-themed. Here's what I have so far:

Art/Spooky Tooth - Alive Not Dead (the best song in the mix so far)
Baby Huey & The Baby Sitters - Hard Times (Works based on the neighborhood we live in)
The Monochrome Set - Eine Symphonie des Grauens
Trembling Blue Stars - Haunted Days (Topically relevant)
Grizzly Bear - Knife
Arthur Brown - Fanfare - Fire Poem, Fire
Deru - You Haunt Me
Zager & Evans - In the Year 2525 (Funny, she'd appreciate it)

Those are the gems. Then I have these, which I may use but they really skew the sentiment of the mix:

Atlas Sound - A Ghost Story (OK for filler)
The Chocolate Watchband - Gossamer Wings (Fun, but no real sentiment)
Tha Alkaholiks - WLIX (Besides the toy ghost sample, not so relevant)
M83 - Car Chase Terror! (Might just creep her out)
Justice - Stress (Clever nod to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" so it's Halloweeny but that's it)
Fifty Foot Hose - If Not This Time (Spooky, not romantic)
Lordi - Hardrock Hallelujah (Maybe the same)
Geto Boys - Mind Playing Tricks on Me (Halloween -themed but not of no value for this purpose)
Laurie Anderson - O Superman (Jarring and scary in the wrong way)

So there's what I have. I might use some of the songs from the "bad" list... really I just want to have a fun 'spooky' mix that isn't actually that creepy or heavy, that has some sentimental value, maybe not all the way through, but the emphasis is on fun and 'cute' haloweenyness, with enough sentiment to make it the type of thing you'd give someone you were into. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How about The Boy Least Likely To - I'm Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon To Your Star. The apples are holiday thematic, and it's a lovely tune.

Mordy, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 05:51 (sixteen years ago)

BTW the best song I have in there so far is The Trebling Blue Stars track.

PublicRadio, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 05:56 (sixteen years ago)

ummm IMHO listening to a mixtape does not actually make a person a programmable robot who will react to this or that song in a predictable way

just put on songs that are good

claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 06:01 (sixteen years ago)

you need this song: http://home.comcast.net/~flickhead/AndyArthurs.html (download link at the bottom of the page)

jabba hands, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 06:02 (sixteen years ago)

@claudia: I'm not trying to program someone's thoughts. I think the main point of the post is, I told her I would make her a Halloween mix if she made me a Christmas one, and well, it's a tough thing to make a light, fun cutesy Halloween mix. I have plenty of music that's just straight-up terrifying, and that's not what I'm going for at all.

PublicRadio, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 06:16 (sixteen years ago)

Just about anything by Jill Tracy would fit the bill. Also The Gothic Archies, or Rasputina. I'll come up with titles later.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 06:51 (sixteen years ago)

ah well if she *likes* cute..

well they aren't cute but a great band, helium "i am a witch" or "ghost car"
kristen hersh "your ghost"

claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 06:58 (sixteen years ago)

Classics IV - Spooky anyone?

chocolatepiekid, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

sorry earlier post had v little to do with the question & much to do w/personal view that ilm takes mixtapes way too seriously :)

PJ HARVEY white chalk, just about anything is spooky as hell, and awfully grim.. "grow grow grow" or "the piano" or "the mountain"

slant 6 "what kind of monster are you?"

chromatics! "hands in the dark"

mazzy star "ghost highway"

miss kitten/golden boy "rippen kitten"

the knife silent shout would be good too, maybe "neverland"

claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 07:13 (sixteen years ago)

liars "we fenced other houses with the bones of our own"
so great!!

claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 07:15 (sixteen years ago)

i heartily endorse the knife, chromatics and liars recommendations.
instead of "car chase terror" maybe go for the superpitcher remix of "don't save us from the flames" for that romantic/microgoth feel ;-)

willem, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 07:54 (sixteen years ago)

I am liking daria-g's budding mix, altho it's probably a bit too po-faced for the initial concept

Califone - Vampiring Again

jbaut, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 09:20 (sixteen years ago)

Lydia Lunch's version of "Spooky".

steampig67, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 10:41 (sixteen years ago)

haha completely OTM

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

Anything off of Around the World in 80 Bikinis by Famous Monsters
Doesn't fit the romantic criteria, but is Halloweeny and fun.

"Batman, Wolfman, Frankenstein or Dracula" by the Diamonds

Outkast - Dracula's Wedding

The Sonics - Witch

Our DJ's better than all these bands (Susan), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 12:52 (sixteen years ago)

Henri Salvador: "Dracula Cha Cha Cha"

It's exactly what the title suggests, and it's spooky and fun.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 12:55 (sixteen years ago)

needs screamin jay hawkins - 'i put a spell on you'

sleepingbag, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 12:55 (sixteen years ago)

What about "This Is Halloween" from the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack? I think that should fit your definiton well.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 12:58 (sixteen years ago)

Whodini: "The Haunted House of Rock"

Old school rap with a horror theme, maybe not so romantic but definitely cute and fun.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 13:00 (sixteen years ago)

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince "Then She Bit Me"

Maybe.

L.L.N.L. Cool J (kingkongvsgodzilla), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 13:03 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks everyone for your input. This is proving to be difficult, especially since I'm asking a bunch of people on the internet what they recommend a total stranger put on his mix for another complete stranger. I appreciate these recommendations, though.

I've added T-Connection - Do What You Wanna Do and New Order - Blue Monday '88, both perfect for this mix.

Outkast - Dracula's Wedding is also good.

Do, do check out that Lydia Lunch song

Or the original by Dusty Springfield, depending on how quirky she is.

L.L.N.L. Cool J (kingkongvsgodzilla), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

Groovie Ghoulies' cover of "Chupacabra" is a hoot. Haven't heard the Super Furry Animals' original, so that may be better.

The Cure "Fear of Ghosts"
The Watson Twins' cover of "Just Like Heaven" (kind of spooky how she vanishes at the end)
The B-52s "Devil in my Car"

Nick Cave "Red Right Hand"
Annie Lennox "Lovesong for a Vampire"
Mitch Ryder "Devil with a Blue Dress"
Stevie Wonder "Superstition"
Velvet Underground "The Murder Mystery"
U2 "October"
Concrete Blonde "Bloodletting"
Oingo Boingo "Dead Man's Party"
David Bowie "Scary Monsters"
The Chameleons UK "Swamp Thing"
Bauhaus "Bela Lugosi's Dead"

Search Art of the Mix under "Halloween" or "October" and you should be able to piece together more.

scampering alpaca, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

But not a lot of those are "romantic", now that I look at those, aside from maybe Stevie, Annie and U2.

scampering alpaca, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

someday I'll meet a girl who is spooky/haloween themed AND romantic

bnw, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

there is a lot of spooky stuff on the wicker man sdtk
willow's song comes to mind but watch out -- it's sexy rather than cute.

will this person appreciate goblin?

La Lechera, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

Might be thoroughly inappropriate but hilarious and a great track to boot: Midnight Mike's "Necro Dance."

I can't decide if Springsteen's "Atlantic City" is perfect or terrible for this mix.

ablaeser, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

Would "Spooky" Dusty Springfield be right for this mix?

Yr woman might take it the rong way, but I'd nominate "Who's to Say" by Blanche

Pillbox, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 08:59 (sixteen years ago)

or: "Terror Couple Kill Colonel" by Bauhaus

Pillbox, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 09:13 (sixteen years ago)

What about "This Is Halloween" from the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack? I think that should fit your definiton well.

this makes me think of Corpse Bride soundtrack also but I don't remember any song expect the cool jazzy (be-bop-y?) one sung by a skeleton but I don't think it was romantic.

But also makes me think of from the recent file version of Sweeny Todd sountrack By the Sea which i genuinely think is cute sweet and while not halloween themed specifically, surely death + pies = halloween-y connotation-ness

fantasimundo, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 10:33 (sixteen years ago)

After reading the subject line I immediately thought of a beautiful and slightly spooky exotica instrumental by Les Baxter named The Ancient Galleon, think of a weird, woozy, underwater bolero.

If you sort through this wfmu post there are a few good ones, depending on your tastes:

"I Walked With A Zombie" is pretty romantic. It's got that slow-dance/"last song of the evening" kinda vibe to it.

L.L.N.L. Cool J (kingkongvsgodzilla), Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

Ok, how about:

Sprites - George Romero. Cute indie tune about learning zombie survival skills from the movies.
Witches - Lost With the Real Gone. Detroit pysch-pop with a supernatural theme.
Mekons - Club Mekon. Vampires as a metaphor for sexual politics.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

Should mixtaper and mixtapee have senses of humor about the proceedings, I think Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" would also be good. Or better still, Heaven 17's dancefloor version of the song.
