Hefner has the better cover art but is it as good a student girl leg opener??

Amongst northern girls, yeah.

Hefner were truly dreadful. So B&S have to get my vote

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

Hefner by a good distance. Asked my girlfriend coz I thought she'd say the opposite but instead she chose not to choose.

Where is the 'permanent loss of hearing' option?

is it as good a student girl leg opener??

OMG pato.

The Plastic Fork (Pashmina), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 11:49 (sixteen years ago)

hymn for the cigs is probably the best song from all 6 records but the third hefner album is not great and the other two are pretty patchy. it's kind of a default win for b&s but nothing to get too excited about

jonty alouette (electricsound), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 11:50 (sixteen years ago)

I thought I would like Hefner cos the 1st song I heard by them was Hymn For The Cigarettes, which is actually good, but everything else I've heard since has been shit.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 11:58 (sixteen years ago)

hefner had some great, great tracks, but their albums on the whole are really not that great, particularly the third one. so they lose.

akm, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 13:28 (sixteen years ago)

I hate BS covers (tho the boobs on the first one are kinda surprising/charming, considering) but geez those Hefner covers're the worst ever. The first one's bad enough, but making it a habit? Um BS, I've never heard Hefner and haven't heard mention of them in about 10 years

Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

Ignoring Smiths ripoff and forgiving the utter placidity of the BWTAS cover, those first two BS albums have really good photos as covers.

Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

So I guess I don't hate them no more. Also if some heavily ironic band put their records out with those Hefner covers now they'd look kinda great! So, I don't hate anything really.

Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

I love Hefner, and they probably hold a more personal place for me (especially their 10", "The Hefner Soul," which has probably my 5 favorite Hayman songs: Flowers, A Hymn for the Coffee, Broodmare, The Girl from the Coast, and More Christian Girls), but those first 3 B&S albums are so incredible. Two of my favorite lyricists ever, Murdoch and Hayman. I can't bring myself to vote, as though it would be some kind of betrayal. It's all very twee.

Have never heard Hefner. They get my vote.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Shortly after these two bands peaked, old-punker me discovered B&S and old punker Doug Submachine discovered Hefner. And we respectively became obsessed, and introduced them to each other. Wimpy music people that don't like wimpy music can love. Because close listening reveals both bands to be total, magnificent jerks on the order of the Dwarves. B&S has better music, but Hefner has better lyrics. It's a tie. But I'll vote B&S, since they we the one who's record I bought first.

I didn't vote, but if I did Hefner would've been +1

I like most of If You're Feeling Sinister (destroy: Judy and the Dream of Horses), but never really got into the other two B&S ones compared to the Hefners.
