If Everybody was their 'band' album, what's this? Opening song is definitely their rockiest to date. The album has a great guitarsolo aswell. But averages around their usual loungy mix of pop, jazz and krautrock. A good one.

i want to hear it, but i seem to listen to a sea & cake album once or twice, really like it, then never listen to it again.

i've only heard "Weekend" from this new one -- it is GREAT.

I'm like Jordan with this band but I can never figure out why, 'cause during those two listens, man do I love the Sea and Cake! and then they're gone.

Listening to them reminded me how Sea And Cake had subtly integrated African rhythms and guitar influences into their music 13-14 years before it became a hot topic this year. Their songs, their sound, their musicianship are all exquisite. It's just that they rarely have hooks that stick to the ribs, hence the quick fade. Just like Stereolab, I think I'd had enough, but when I hear the latest offering, I so need it.

it's always sounded more like brazilian influence to me
― Jordan, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 17:07 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, that too, along with jazz, soul, Van Dyke Parks, etc.

I only seem to dig their music between the Days Memorial and Labor...

About a month ago I pulled out my copy of the Biz which I had forgotten I owned (bought it when it came out because of the Tortoise connection). I thought it sounded like some sort of terrible college-town party band with a name like String Cheese Incident or whatnot. Listening to it again after ten plus years, it really struck me. Maybe this is a sign of getting old that I find this shit catchy. Anyways, I likes them now and have caught up on the records I missed.

I'd be into hearing this, I should give it a listen if it is indeed more rocking the the last .... six, or however many albums. I still love and adore the debut which I think is just one of the best indie rock albums ever and so much more interesting than the rest of their albums (all of which I like, but they start to wash over me after a while).

oops I thought this came out a long time ago... The Sea and Cake: COD/SD etc. etc.
― CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 21:28 (sixteen years ago)
I think their early albums had a noticeable beach zen sound. Now I think with Car Alarms and Everybody that they have a beach zen at night sound. Everything is a little heavier/darker... Car Alarm is a solid album. It could become forgettable though. It's definitely better than Everybody. They don't utilize a pop-like sound anymore like in 'Stations in the Valley' 'Afternoon Speaker' 'Showboat Angel' and 'Lamonts Lament'. Unfortunate. Also unfortunate that Two Gentlemen and Glass seem like they will be the only albums of their kind (and I know half of each album is remixes but I fucking love Glass).
