i just got this album by one of the original beta crew before it all went wrong. he co-wrote all of the spiritualist songs on the 3eps. press release says that he went a bit ill. anyone know anything?
it's a beautiful record, though. lo-fi beta band, relaxing, calming, with different original versions of the songs that he co-wrote, dry the rain, etc.
just picked up for reissue by domino.

I don't know anything about Lone Pidgeon, but I might as well mention
that BB frontman Steve Mason's 1999 solo release,
King Biscuit
Time - "No Style" EP, is worth picking up if the asking price is
to your pleasing. It's got three tracks of gorgeous, shimmering
pastoral pop, and the rest is ye olde charming BB shambolic wierdness
("Fatherriver" is what you'd expect "The Beta Band Jungle" to sound
like, and however intolerable that may seem to some, the track makes
me smile). Best of all, the full title is
King Biscuit
Time 'sings' Nelly Foggit's Blues in "Me and the Pharoahs"> and,
really, who doesn't wanna own something called that?― Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 18 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Hello all,
Please have a quick read of the following. It’s about a very rare
live appearance by Lone Pigeon. Thanks for all the reactions – yup, a
very special record. Domino noticed this and have licensed it for the
rest of the world.
If any of you can get a preview in or a listing it would be massively
appreciated – we know time is tight. And if you want to go just let
us know….
Following an acclaimed series of events last year, (featuring PIANO
MAGIC, SAVOY GRAND, APPLIANCE, ROTHKO and many others) The Great
Lakes brings you HINTERLAND, a series of live music events presenting
artists from different regional music scenes around the UK.
The HINTERLAND series begins on Wednesday 29th May at the Arts Cafe
with:
From St. Andrews, Fife
JAMES YORKSTON
LONE PIGEON
THE ABRAHAMS
THE COLLECTIVE
(featuring KING CREOSOTE, PIP DYLAN and GUMMI BAKO)
Together these artists form what is loosely known as The Fence
Collective - a micro-indie label and collective of northeast Fife
bands who play each other’s songs live and on each other’s records.
The Fence collective have quietly been writing and recording songs
for years with little regard for the music industry, simply handing
out CDs to friends or anyone listening, yet producing some of the
most exciting home-grown music to grace Britain.
This wayward approach has spawned a legion of loyal followers
including reputable label Domino, who have recently signed the much
talked about James Yorkston, and Lone Pigeon outside of Europe.
So what do they sound like? The collective produce contemporary folk,
but not of the Turin Brakes, Starsailor et al variety. The NME
described James Yorkston’s debut release for Domino, ‘The Lang Toun’,
as "A thousand times more haunting than anything the New Acoustic
Movement ever dreamed of. Mercury Judges, are you listening?". While
The Abrahams play rustic country shanties, The Collective, a mix of
bluegrass, funk and Dylan-esque ditties and Lone Pigeon, the kind of
acid drenched folk that the Beta Band have been crowned for
inventing. In fact Lone Pigeon was the original singer/songwriter and
co-founder of The Beta Band (then know as The Pigeons) and penned
much of ‘The Three EPs’. Unfortunately, due to ill health and bad
timing, he was forced to abandon his Beta cousins as they signed to
Regal/EMI in 1996. This rare performance (his London debut) hints at
a return to health and will see Lone Pigeon previewing songs from his
forthcoming debut album, ‘Concubine Rice’ (Sketchbook/Fence).
The second HINTERLAND event at The Arts Cafe will be in late June.
Details to follow.

from that Magic For Your Ears website:
Enigmatic songwriter Lone Pigeon is set to be collected on new box set ‘Time Capsule’.
A founder member of The Beta Band, Gordon Anderson helped inspire their stunning initial burst of material. However mental illness intervened and when it became clear that he simply could not tour the songwriter left the group.
Retreating to his native Fife, Anderson then became part of the Fence collective. Urged on by close friends, Gordon Anderson used the name Lone Pigeon to release his startling lo-fi recordings.
Often sneaking out on limited run CD-Rs, Lone Pigeon became a cult figure. In part benefiting from the prestige afforded to The Beta Band, the recordings have a raw, ragged quality that is quite unique.
Difficult to find, Domino have now stepped in to offer the complete guide to Lone Pigeon. Due for release on April 11th, ‘Time Capsule’ gathers a total of seven complete studio albums by the Scottish songwriter.
A lavish package, ‘Time Capsule’ comes packaged in beautiful mini card LP sleeves with dizzyingly colourful artwork. An eye catching design, it sits alongside Anderson’s vivid songwriting.
Alongside this, the Lone Pigeon box set comes complete with an emotional tribute from his brother – none other than King Creosote. Admitting that he often finds the singer to be a difficult puzzle to crack, the Fence mainstay describes Lone Pigeon as “a wanderer, a pilgrim, a messianic jew, a dervish, a vandal, a prophet, but mainly a lost soul.”
Time Capsule will be available as a seven CD box set, with just one album gaining a vinyl pressing. ’28 Secret Tracks’ will be available on wax – currently the only Lone Pigeon album to be pressed onto vinyl.
Lone Pigeon is set to release Time Capsule on April 11, 2011.
The tracklisting is as follows, but please note that the album ’28 Secret Tracks’ has no tracklisting. Naturally.
