what's the best portable stereo that I can walk around with, maybe on my shoulder (and it's not too expensive)?

I didn't know people did this anymore. I thought it was like, an 80's thing breakdancers did.

This is a newer version of what I use. Built in speakers are powered by a 10 watt amplifier with 12 AA batteries. It sounds pretty decent, and can definitely be loud enough even with traffic noise. I clip my MP3 player on the shoulder strap for easy access. Great for biking. I suppose you could even put on some sparkly spandex and rollerblades, and load it up with some disco...

With some help from Charles Pierce and endless FB posts, I just clued into the fact that Blonde on Blonde and Pet Sounds came out on the same day. I wonder--and seriously doubt--if there were ever two films of similar stature that opened on the same day.

it's still my least favorite and least listened to of his 1964-1970 work. Lots of filler.

i think it's a total masterpiece -- the sound of this record is pretty much my ideal. and dylan's vocals are amazing.
listening to the cutting edge stuff from these sessions is a treat too.
apparently there's some dissent as to whether BoB actually came out today in 66.

We're also coming up or around the anniversary of the Manchester "Royal Albert Hall" concert.

Do you think Judas is coming back?

Mark G, Monday, 16 May 2016 23:00 (nine years ago)

I'd like to know what other albums were released that day...Junior Walker? Buck Owens? Count Five? Bert Kaempfert?

two years pass...

really enjoying Daryl Sanders' new book about BOB recording sessions (That Thin, Wild Mercury Sound). kinda slight at only 200 pages, I'm more than halfway through, and there's a lot of known info in here, but I really like specific and narrowly focused books like this where every hour of an album's recording sessions are documented.

some things I didn't know:
-the cover photo was taken on the coldest day in NYC in 1966. the blurriness wasn't a drug reference or even an aesthetic decision, they were both shivering uncontrollably.
-Dylan lived off of milkshakes, malts, and candy bars alongside the amphetamines. certainly a more pleasing junkie diet than Bowie's a decade later...
-the whole Nashville sessions only lasted 8 days.
-I mistakenly thought two songs - One of Us Must Know and Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat - were preserved from the aborted NYC sessions with the Hawks. just One of Us Must Know.
-Visions of Johanna was allegedly written during a blackout in a blizzard in NYC in late 1965 (hence the working title "Freeze Out," and perhaps even the most famous line, "the ghost of electricity")

besides that, just a deeper appreciation for every player and every instrument on this record, by far my favorite Dylan. reading about the recording of Visions of Johanna and every player and how each and every take went is fascinating to me. I'm hearing things I've never heard before, and there aren't many records I've listened to more than this one. check it out if this sounds like your bag...
