how long have they been around for? i'm digging the pillow single with the wagon christ remixes, sounding very much like a boo radley's giant step track with dj shadow stepping in to fuck everything up.#

and why does badly drawn boy get the coolest remixers in? avalanches, minotaur shock, capital k, mr scruff?

"Pillow" is one of the best singles of the year!

I LOVE IT!

i haven't really heard them. is he still on planet mu? i've been dubious about the planet mu roster (perhaps unfairly), but the only thing i 've heard that really got me on there was that Elliot Fastback (sp?) track, switch hardflip. i saw venetian snares couple months ago, i wasn't overly impressed, got a load of mps of his though, i'll give it another go when i get my pc back

His first album sounded fantastic four years ago, but I don't think it's aged all that well. I remember describing at the time as what big beat should have sounded like if it ever had any hope of being good. It's quite slow and much more rockish and dubby than eg Mu-ziq, but not in a daft gothy way like Death in Vegas.

I totally adore 'pillow' the wagonchrist mix is fkg ace!! There does seem to be an awful lot of this kind of electronica/pop kind of thing around at the moment eg echoboy, cornelius and so on, what exactly are these people classed as in terms of genre?

That album is aeons old, but it's just been re-released. Thank fuck. I love them. Take that as you will, that's the kiss of death for most people. It's wonderful shoegazer pop with BEATS underneath. Imagine that. I just ignore the stupid bleepy stuff and skip around the flat to the big, lovely Medicine guitars. It's IDM for people who fucking hate dance music. Hooray! Just what we needed.

However, they're not that great live. As you would imagine they wouldn't be. Then again, that could have been the fault of the NMEbastards who cut them off halfway through their set...

six years pass...

What ever happened to this dude? I was going through some old CDs the other night while making an electronic music mix, and I just kind of tossed it back into the pile - though I seem to remember liking a track or two on it.

Kristian has released a couple of albums since Island Row: Happy Happy in 2004 and Nomad Junk in 2005. Both are good, but not as solid as Island Row. And Sounds Of The Empire is grossly overlooked. I've been a huge fan of his work. And I'm hoping a new Capitol K album will pop up some day. I'm hoping he just hasn't given up due to not having money or something :(

And he left Planet Mu circa 2001-2002. Island Row got really good U.S. distribution, and now it's one of those brilliant electronic albums that you can find for a buck in the used bins. :-/

two months pass...

Got the new album Notes From: Life On The Wire With A Wrecking Ball. It's Kristian's best album since Island Row, which isn't saying all that much given that Happy Happy and Nomad Junk were alright but not brilliant. Also "Libertania" is obviously regurgitating the same (and wonderful but still exactly the same) bloopy samples that launched the lead off track "City" off Island Row. The rest of the album has a lot more Kristian singing, and more up in the mix. He's not singing in a high register though. Dare I say it's a tad more Disco Inferno-ey? It's also more Perrey & Kingsley. It's his most immediately likeable album to date. Just wondering if I'll still be listening to it by the end of the year. If so, this is definitely a Top 3.

As for the 'ethnicky beatyness', having listened to .O.Rang's stuff recently, there's definitely a musical link/influence/inspiration/whatever between Capitol K and .O.Rang that's lasted.

Damn, didn't notice it at first, but there's a whole lotta Soft Cell going on with the new album! I didn't know Kristian had it in him to grunt in heavy echo non stop.
