ILM's Two worst enemies destroying one another...

Just heard the Negativland parody of U2s "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"; Just wanted to know if this warms the hard hearts of the anti-U2 crowd, or does it just make them angrier at Negativland. I frankly though it smelled like burning plastic.

I remember hearing it and not understanding what all the fuss was about. If anyone should be embarassed and litigious about it, it's Casey Casem. Moreover, I think it was U2's legal team that had the problems with it, not the band themselves.

It was, in fact, Casey Kasem that kept the band tied up in legal issues surrounding a re-release of the material with a different cover. Island's big issue with it was that the original cover was "deceptive" and could theoretically cut into sales of the upcoming U2 release...if the customers were morons, of course. If I remember correctly, all the legal ducks were in a row to get the product released (after a lot of wrangling) but Kasem's lawyers refused. And that was that.

yes i believe thats right. theres a companion booklet thing called the letter U and the numeral 2 which documents the whole affair, with copies of legal doc's, faxes between parties, etc.

Well, as I understand it, U2's record company was mildly annoyed and were just concerned that the front cover would "confuse" people into thinking the album was a U2 album called Negativland and not vice versa. The Reeeeallly nasty case DID come from Casey Kasem (sp?) because they not only destroyed his image and publically humilated him, but they didn't ask for permission to use the samples of him (and I bet he still wonders HOW THEY GOT THEM.)

The part that absolutely kills me is that I have been informed that the version of the track I've heard is the "Casey Kasem is only slightly annoyed" version. Theres supposed to be another one where he gets even saltier.

Negativland the Neu track = classic

Negativland the band and U2 = 2 big YAWNS

Kasem knows how they got the samples of him: some studio tech started circulating them around, and they were already out in the public domain before the Negs got hands on them.
