Lou Reed's third live album, this 1978 release was Reed's contribution to the double live album era. It was recorded at the Bottom Line, New York and there is no overdubbing. It is distinguished for featuring several lengthy and humorous monologues from the artist, among them a detailed story of the origin of "Walk on the Wild Side." The illustrations on the cover were by Brent Bailer.

Aw, Shakey, you're really missing out.

All of ILM probably knows this is my fave Reed album, already, so I'll be quiet. You guys are lucky I'm sober right now! :)

Coney Island Baby

"Berlin," but a 17-minute "Wild Side" where he never sings the song makes a real statement.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 9 October 2008 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

I'm voting for "Waiting For The Man" because hearing it on the radio at 3 AM as a teenager really made a deep impression on me, though I wouldn't own this album until years later. It's just such a wonderfully "fuck you" version of the song that meanders along calmly and then BLAM! (almost like Dead Kennedys used to do with the likes of "We've Got A Bigger Problem Now") The crescendo happens and he totally goes for the jugular of whoever this person is he broke up with ("Hey there bitch! Don't you know you better get out of here quick!"). And then it gets calm and classy again "Groucho Marx said...bring me a rose or leave me alone..." I would imagine he was totally drunk through the whole thing, too, but maybe that goes without saying. The band performance/crowd heckling is fantastic as well. I don't see it as like anti-feminist either, it's just about being hurt and trying to deal with that. It's not something I could imagine him having scripted, it just seems totally off-the-cuff like the rest of this album.

Also that part where he says "It's just a temporary thing..." I didn't know he had a song called "Temporary Thing" until now! I've never tried the "Rock & Roll Heart" album, but I will soon.

This album is so classic, ACtually reminds me..

I once found a copy (actually, only lp1 of the set) that had a large hole in the middle (like a 45 basically), I think it was a special edition for putting into jukeboxes.

Imagine!

Mark G, Friday, 10 October 2008 08:27 (sixteen years ago)

Holy hell, there'd be some fights in THAT bar! LOL at least until someone could put their coins in and turn the jukebox to something more crowd-pleasing.

it's funny to hear the bootlegs from around the time of this recording -- they're fairly straightforward! none of the rambling monologues or anything. i guess it was a NY thing only. still, they're worth hearing if you like the sound of this particular Lou backing band ...

tylerw, Friday, 10 October 2008 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I do, actually. And it strikes me that the version of "Pale Blue Eyes" on this is especially mind-blowing. That might be my second fave choice, here.

Bimble, Friday, 10 October 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

"The bear that plays basketball"; "Give me an issue, I'll give you a tissue"; "Fuck Radio Ethiopia, I'm Radio Brooklyn" - you might as well do a "Best one-liner/non-sequitur from "Take No Prisoners" version of 'Sweet Jane'" poll.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 10 October 2008 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

i vote "the double live album era"

haven't you all heard? (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Friday, 10 October 2008 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

I've completely lost my mind. The version of "Waiting For The Man" on this was actually borrowing from the song "Temporary Thing" off "Rock and Roll Heart". I never understood this before now and I have fallen in LOVE with that album. I never could have believed solo Lou would be so satisfying. I'm completetly aghast that he could make me that happy over one album's length.
