Yeah, I hate to be all hacky LOL Durst in 2008. But if someone tells you, "You're gonna be on a song with Bono and Nas and Michael Stipe" you need to step your fucking game up no matter who you are.

Even if it was just the Backstreet Boys and Ja Rule on that track, a sleepy eight year old would have come harder.

I'd forgotten how completely nonsensical this was.

He gets four bars total and only manages to rhyme in two of them

This would be a good chorus for a Limp Bizkit comeback single.

This reminds me of two days ago I was at my folks' house flippin through the channels cos they got satellite and 2008 MTV Video Awards had Kid Rock. My mom was like "Oh I hate him, it's that guy that rips off Lynyrd Skynyrd." It was a surreal moment. I swear that happened like 5 years ago...?

Wasn't Durst's career over years ago also?

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

the kid rock song that rips of skynyrd just came out this year.

jim, Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but it wouldn't be totally out of the question for someone to call him "that guy that rips off Lynyrd Skynyrd" years and years ago

some dude, Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

I swear I heard that years ago. Weird.

Btw, he got thrown out of the Waffle House down the street from where I live at 4am. I would've paid good money to see that.

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 9 October 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

But Waffle House is free!

This is hilarious, I've never heard this version before. Turns out it's not as awful as I expected it to be until we get to the Fred Durst contribution at the very end of the song. You'd think they'd almost leave it until the end in extreme urgency for a fade out edit.

Moka, Monday, 20 October 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

I like the new order of the lyrics.

jigglepanda.gif (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 October 2008 01:00 (seventeen years ago)

Also, to be fair "We got human beings using humans for a bomb" is not terrible as far as saddo frat-hippie bong-gazing deep thoughts go, and might even be an OK line if Nas dropped it in the middle of a verse, but Durst uses to punctuate his opening salvo like a TRUTH BOMB, so it's kinda lulz.

To be fair to Fred here, a lot of these people were in for like one line each. Granted, most of those are the "singers," but they still get off easy. To say he needs to step up his game vis a vis Stipe and Nelly Furtado sort of misses the point - the real competition here is like, Nas and Ja Rule. Who he was never going to out-rap anyway. (See also: "N2 Gether Now" where he faces off against Method Man with unsurprising results, although he does get in some nice weird turns of phrase like "And that alone will keep John Gotti on the phone.")

Doctor Casino, Monday, 20 October 2008 01:14 (seventeen years ago)

i always heard a lot of method man in fred's rapping

HOOS clique iphones fool get ya steen on (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 20 October 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

I still think he could have done better than THIS. I would rather hear him trying too hard than phoning it in.

jigglepanda.gif (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 October 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

xpost Huh - that's interesting, how so? I'm no rapologist and never know what to listen for comparing people's flows.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 20 October 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

I feel a little ridic saying this about Fred Durst, but like Meth he has kind of elastic meter: he frequently varies the number of syllables from one line to the next, so the number of beats between rhymes keeps shifts a little bit. Also there's a lot of internal rhyme and both, at their best, have this cool little habit of making the internals rhyme in their own rhyme scheme:

viz Meth on Triumph:
As the world turns, I spread like germs
Bless the globe with the pestilence, the hard-headed never learn
Its my testament to those burned
Play my position in the game of life, standin firm

here's fred on N2Gether Now:
I'm dashin all the meteor strikes keep the media dykes
As re-enforcements for the fight
And that alone with keep John Gotti on the phone
Tangled in his own I got the bees on the track
Where the fuck you at?

Not making a quality comparison between the two as obviously Meth is on another continent, but I get the impression Fred listened to a lot of Wu-Tang as a snotnosed skatepunk.

HOOS clique iphones fool get ya steen on (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 20 October 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

And I mean it's hard to pull these off lyric websites with their fucked up line breaks but you get the idea I think

HOOS clique iphones fool get ya steen on (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 20 October 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I could buy that! I think the difference is maybe that Fred really abandons the *end* rhyme while still putting a lot of vocal emphasis on the ends of the lines. Which I don't mind when he's good (N2 Gether Now is pretty much as good as it gets) but when he's bad it produces the easily-lampooned "Now I know y'all be lovin' this shit right here / blah blah blah Bizkit is right here."

Doctor Casino, Monday, 20 October 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

In any case I hope snot-nosed skate punks continue to dig the Wu - they're such a treasure chest of styles!
