BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 11 October 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

A pointless comparision, really. Both were great at their best and horrible at their worst.

Voted Black Sabbath because I love "Changes" :)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 11 October 2008 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

Ohhh no, here we go again, can't remember when we came so close to love before!

Hell Bent for Leatherface (J3ff T.), Saturday, 11 October 2008 01:17 (sixteen years ago)

Wow, i can just imagine the 4 New York intellectuals/snobs cowering in the corner while the Sabs are fucking rampaging on stage.

Sabbath, in an utter bloodbath.

Bill Magill, Saturday, 11 October 2008 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

haha--why, Bill? why???

next in the series could be:

pistols vs. clash
zeppelin vs. stones
james brown vs. p-funk

"I'ma lose my religion and go secular on you, boy" (Ioannis), Saturday, 11 October 2008 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

actually went with the Sab here, but that's just probably 'cause i've been burned out on ol' Louie Louie for...um...decades now? good grief...

"Venus in Furs" vs. "Iron Man"

"I'ma lose my religion and go secular on you, boy" (Ioannis), Saturday, 11 October 2008 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

Posted this on the Sabs v Stooges poll, but Sabs > Stooges > VU

Neil S, Saturday, 11 October 2008 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

Bill? i meant Hoos, of course.

(must. remember. to. put. crack-pipe. down. when. posting).

"I'ma lose my religion and go secular on you, boy" (Ioannis), Saturday, 11 October 2008 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

ridic.

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 11 October 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

james brown vs. p-funk

^actually to me this is a blowout win for james, no contest

M@tt He1ges0n, Saturday, 11 October 2008 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

how about if you add Sly & the family on George's side?

"I'ma lose my religion and go secular on you, boy" (Ioannis), Saturday, 11 October 2008 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

obviously the velvets if only for influence's sake. the music's also much better.

rjberry, Sunday, 12 October 2008 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

Voted Sabbath without a second thought. (but oh how I love duh VU)

^^^ (RabiesAngentleman), Sunday, 12 October 2008 13:37 (sixteen years ago)

I don't really see the point of the comparison.

J0hn D., Sunday, 12 October 2008 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

i'm really glad that I've never heard anybody say "Velvets" or "Sabs" in real life, out loud.

haven't you all heard? (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Sunday, 12 October 2008 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

welcome to ilx xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 12 October 2008 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 13 October 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

VU. The clincher for me is those first few seconds after ‘… and then my mind split open…’

brg30, Monday, 13 October 2008 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

STOP MAKING THE POLLS SO SHORT!!!!

I nearly didn't get to vote in this one.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:11 (sixteen years ago)

Sabs > Stooges > VU

seconded, with extreme vigour.

m the g, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:36 (sixteen years ago)

Thirded

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

Word.

Neil S, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

I need to buy like an ounce and work out what's so great about Sabbath, cos this is not making sense to me

Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

Don't most bands have riffs? I guess they disguise them... it bugs me cos I really like shit like Earth...

Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

There's riffs and there's riffs...

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

I'm kinda with John this seems like a fairly random poll, I'm hard-pressed to think of a single common trait the bands share.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

It's not a random poll, it's the obvious cage rematch that hadn't happened after Sabs vs. Stooges and Stooges vs. VU.

(Don't ever make me have to choose between VU and Hawkwind, though. I would probably explode)

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

quite. what possible common ground could there be between two noisy black-clad 1960s guitar bands that were hugely influential on generations of bands to come and remain enduringly popular among people who own more than one bong?

m the g, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

wait so being "hugely influential and popular" count as "common traits" now? wtf

also VU vs. Stooges poll isn't over yet

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

also Sabbath are not "noisy" - certainly not in the way VU are. Everything about Sabbath's output is very tightly controlled and methodically played - there's no atonality, no free-form improvisation, no dissonance.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

(ooh but they both wore black!)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

Oooooooh scary

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

Dougie has black trousers on tho

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

lolz love Lou's pants!

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

and his "and WHERE do you thing YOU've been all this time?"

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

..stance.

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

i like sterl's pants in that pic. therefore, velvet underground defeats sabbath.

tylerw, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

Sterling's trousers are the best things I have ever seen in my LIFE.

I totally want a pair.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

Everything about Sabbath's output is very tightly controlled and methodically played - there's no atonality, no free-form improvisation, no dissonance.
"FX" on Vol 4?

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

xxxpost I was being facetious. well done for picking up on that.

but point being that you can pick and choose your criteria for comparison. there are as many areas of similarity between these two as there are differences, and there are certainly enough of the former for them to go head-to-head. it's not exactly fennesz vs peter, paul & mary.

m the g, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

i don't listen to either too much

goole, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

Then you've come to the right thread

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

Has to be Sabbath for me. Ironical, since I'm more fond of listening to the velvets with more frequency, yet when I'm in the mood for some sabbath it comes joined with such an intense pleasure I can let go for all the dusty months.

Also Iomi has crafted some of the best guitar riffs in rock history, whereas the velvets...

Moka, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

If you like the orange pants, you can still vote Sabbath. See below

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

Plus the Orange amps are great.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

from "lol" to "holy shit!" in 30 seconds

HA HA!

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 11:07 (sixteen years ago)

Fairly close run, and a high turnout!

Neil S, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, surprisingly close. where'd all the indie fuxors go?

Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu (Ioannis), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 11:13 (sixteen years ago)

Close? They won by like 25%!

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

um

what U cry 4 (jim), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 11:31 (sixteen years ago)

By that, I mean they got 125% of the votes that Sabbath got.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

So they actually won by a margin of just over 11%.

Neil S, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 11:43 (sixteen years ago)

Why was that so close? I'm hoping at least half of Sabbath's votes were from people taking the piss.

rjberry, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

Not mine. It's not that hard to conceive of preferring Sabbath to VU is it? I've always thought the VU were over-rated, myself, which is probably due to ignorance, but there we go.

Neil S, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 12:47 (sixteen years ago)

I'm hoping at least half of Sabbath's votes were from people taking the piss.

funny, I'm hoping the same thing about the velvets votes.

m the g, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 13:15 (sixteen years ago)

" I'm hoping at least half of Sabbath's votes were from people taking the piss."

Worst post ever.
