ALONE AND FORSAKEN" Ringtones to Cell Phone
Words and music by Hank Williams, Sr.
We [Am] met in the springtime when blossoms unfold
The pastures were green and the [Em] meadows were [Am] gold
Our love was in flower as summer grew on
Her love like the leaves now has [Em] withered and [Am] gone.
The roses have faded, there's frost at my door
The birds in the morning don't [Em] sing any-[Am] more
The grass in the valley is starting to die
And out in the darkness the [Em] whippoorwills [Am] cry.
Refrain
A-[F] lone and forsaken by [C] fate and by man
Oh, Lord, if You hear me please [Am] hold to my hand
Oh, [Em] please under-[Am] stand.
Oh, where has she gone to, oh, where can she be
She may have forsaken some other like me
She promised to honor, to love and obey
Each vow was a plaything that she threw away.
The darkness is falling, the sky has turned gray
A hound in the distance is starting to bey
I wonder, I wonder - what she's thinking of
Forsaken, forgotten - without any love.
Theres the lyrics then theres the delivery. Especially in the chorus. It sends a shiver up my spine everytime.
Compared to anyone who writes lyrics - this guy is lord.

Ok then maybe that should have been the thread title: is there a better songwriter? I have four or so records and there dosent seem to be a dud in the bunch. Are there any stink Hank Williams songs? Lets be negative.

not that i've heard--although his wife's singing does make a number of them kinda rough going.

Yeah I had a record of duets with Hank and Audrey, pretty blech.

O.k. I remember she kind of forced him to take her on tour and play on his records and the poor chump couldn't say no. He must have been blinded by more than just the uppers and downers. What songs do you think are the worst? This is Audrey Guy, I presume. I know that Hank wasn't an angel either but aren't geniuses able to be forgiven? O.K that sounds like a thread title. I'm going to post it then go to bed.

He's forgiven. I don't lord the Audrey stuff over him any more than the stuff that was overdubbed and released after he died. Well, that's different because it (the Audrey shit) wasn't completely out of his hands, for sure, but I sort of just look at it as another colorful detail of his life and music. And I remember liking the songs (I forget what was on it, this was some years ago and I have no idea what happened to the record) but thinking they were unfortunately obscured by the wifey. He has a large enough output beyond this stuff that speaks for itself, so that record for me sort of stood as a separate curiosity.

Yep. This has lost none of its power - I guess my reason for starting up this thread with this song was that when I read about Hank and his great tunes - this one is not commonly mentioned - along with the usual 'Your Cheatin heart, I'm so Lonesome etc... and I am not sure why. For me it is among the best songs ever written.
