^^^ (RabiesAngentleman), Sunday, 12 October 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

there's gotta be at least one person reppin Hawkwind. Not me though.

^^^ (RabiesAngentleman), Sunday, 12 October 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

If more of their albums had that brutal huge guitar tone that Space Ritual Vol. 2 has, Hawkwind'd almost stand a chance.

BigLurks, Monday, 13 October 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

Hawkwind win easy!

Niles Caulder, Monday, 13 October 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

I've never bothered with anything of theirs other than Space Ritual 2 for more than a track or two before giving up. Just....nah.

Hawkwind

Sabbath fantasy leanings lame and unconvincing. Hawkwind have Michael Moorckock as lyricist.

Jamie T Smith, Monday, 13 October 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

Moorckock?

Jamie T Smith, Monday, 13 October 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Hawkwind, I like their best stuff better than most things.

Poll Wall (Noodle Vague), Monday, 13 October 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

WHY DID YOU MAKE THE POLL SO SHORT?!?!?!

That's really not fair for us Hawkwind fans that post mainly from work!

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

Hawkwind win on quantity of quality, so to speak, plus they just sort of mean more to me, so an easy vote, for all I love Sabbath.

The Plastic Fork (Pashmina), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

"That's really not fair for us Hawkwind fans that post mainly from work!"

Hawkwind fans have jobs?! ;o)

Sorry, I could have sworn I set it to close on Tuesay... anyway, after some thought it's Hawkwind for me too - all great stuff until they started on that tedious boogie trip around Astounding Stories - blimey, how did they go from Warrior on the Edge of Time to that? An amazing fall from grace. Seems like '76 was a bad year for both Hawkwind and Sabbath.

Rombald, Monday, 13 October 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

Hawkwind recovered nicely with Quark Strangeness and Charm in '77.
All these people talking about Space Ritual Vol 2 have heard the original Space Ritual, as well, right?

Trip Maker, Monday, 13 October 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

isn't vol. 2 just an extended version of one of the space ritual discs?

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 13 October 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

Shit, I don't know. I can't agree with the Quality/Quantity remark someone made above about Hawkwind. There are a LOT of shitty Hawkwind records. I still voted for them, though. Their music just resonates with me.

Trip Maker, Monday, 13 October 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Space Ritual Volume 2 is an archive live album by Hawkwind released in 1985 consisting of a live performance from 1972. The tapes were licensed by Dave Brock to former Hawkwind bass player Dave Anderson for release.

This recording is part of the performance that was processed for disc 2 of Space Ritual. Here it is in its original state, with no edits or overdubs, notable differences being a different middle section to "Orgone Accumulator", "Paranoia" included as the middle section of "Time We Left This World Today" and "Wind Of Change" leading into "7 By 7". "Space Is Deep" and "You Shouldn't Do That" / "Seeing It As You Really Are" from this tape were released on Hawkwind Anthology.

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 13 October 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

Cool, thanks. The complete show has been repackaged tons of times, once as a disc of Cosmic Overdrive, one of those awful cleopatra reissues. It all gets confusing to me. It starts off with Space, goes into Orgone Accumulator right away, etc. I'm not sure offhand what of it was used for Vol. 1 (and can't find my copy at the moment, but the whole thing is just badass.

70-73 for both bands were outstanding; some of my favorite music of all time.
I don't like Hawkwind with Lemmy or Sabbath without Ozzy.
However satan is much cooler than space. Sabbath.
Did I just miss voting by a few minutes dam!!

brg30, Monday, 13 October 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

satan is much cooler than space

love that quote & can't wait to find a context to steal it!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

Satan is SOOOO not cooler than space.

Where are all the ILX atheists when you need them? Science PWNS religion in this context.

(Though that poll has them even for once.)

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

Space wins by a wide margin

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

space is cool, but satan is mysterious.

"I'ma lose my religion and go secular on you, boy" (Ioannis), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

space is deep, but satan has gone around the bend

Dead Cat Bounce (Ed), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

Hawkwind's stoned-nihilist vision of deep, empty and unforgiving space is far more sinister than anything Sabbath could come up with. OTOH the subjects of the best Sabbath songs are often doomed, while Hawkwind often seems more hopeful: cold, impersonal space can be somehow personally transcended (through drugs and rock & roll?). Sabbath are pessimist, Hawkwind are pessimist gnostics.

Rombald, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

More to Sabbath than Satan of course

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

I mis-saw that cover as being Wall-E with a sun-ra t-shirt on!

Where are all the ILX atheists when you need them? Science PWNS religion in this context.

gah! I was out. science PWNS religion in all contexts, surely?

but be that as it may, sabbath still PWN hawkwind, though not by a huge margin. sorry.

m the g, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

I like Hawkwind a lot and all but they are way overmatched by Sabbath

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

"I'ma lose my religion and go secular on you, boy" (Ioannis), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

That is just crazy talk.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

For some reason this confrontation makes me think of a big Steve Ditko splash page of Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu.

Not sure which is which, though.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

Sabbath are Dormammu, natch (good call, btw).

The riffs, man, THE RIFFS!!!!!! they are, like, MONOLITHIC.

xp
