It's one of the only pieces of music I've ever heard my dad comment on. He likes it. How do you feel?
― Shushtari (res), Sunday, 12 October 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
Actually a beautiful song, even if it is a bit more obviously "mass produced" than the rest of their output. I've heard worse stuff from Kelly/Steinberg.
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 12 October 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
As a performance, ok (love the Bangles' harmonies, as usual); as a song, awful. It's odd that their two best singles were covers that both peaked at #2 ("Manic Monday" and "Hazy Shade of Winter") (although maybe I like "If She Knew What She Wants" better).

(uh- not sure what happened with my typing up there... i see all kinds of weird characters)
― Shushtari (res), Sunday, 12 October 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)
(oops, ignore that previous post.)
I like this song, but it's a lot schlockier than I remember it being at the age of 10, when I first heard it. it's sort of touching though. I still like it but it's not one of the bangles tunes that I would choose to play if I were going to choose one to put on right now. I actually really like the follow-up single to this, "Be With You". It's a *little* punky and fast, but has an orchestra!

Generally, The Bangles best songs haven't been their biggest hits. And I don't neccessarily mean the first album, which I have never gotten the grip on other than "Going Down To Liverpool". However, later they released several great singles such as "If She Knew What She Wants", "Following", "Walking Down Your Street" and "In My Room", but neither did as well as "Eternal Flame", "Manic Monday" and "Walk Like An Egyptian". The latter is the only Bangles song that I actually dislike.

Quite a nice song although not really one of their best. Hoffs performance is pretty good.
The backing vocals, however, are so weary and half arsed. Were they not getting on by this time?
― Sven Hassel Schmuck, Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)
The backing vocals, however, are so weary and half arsed
probably from them having to record them 500 times for a ridiculously polished production gloss
― Shushtari (res), Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)
They don't have to use the 500th version though.
― Sven Hassel Schmuck, Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)
good chord changes.

geir otm, tho i love most of the debut. love the band but don't have all that much time for this song
― thereminimum chips (electricsound), Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)
Alfred, is it really accurate to call "Manic Monday" a cover? Prince wrote it specifically for them, and for the album, no?
Anyway, "Eternal Flame" . . . uh, the melody is pretty enough, can do without the bridge, Susanna Hoffs's vocal ad-libs in the outro are nice. Not their best song by a long shot, not even probably in my top ten favorite Bangles songs.

I guess not.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
prince did do a version of "manic monday", and it's floating around on p2p, but I think it was never released. not sure if it predates the bangles version or not. I think it does.

I don't hate the song as much as I hate the production.

Kind of weird to see this thread after running into the song twice in fairly quick succession in totally unrelated contexts (a Zach Galifianakis standup special and an episode of Monkey Dust). OOH SYNCHRONICITY SPOOKY
Great song though.

I have this one and "The Flame" by Cheap Trick filed together under "Schlocky 'Flame' songs by bands that used to rock out better, but very nicely executed radio hit material nonetheless."
Eternal Flame is the better of the two, winning on chord changes as mentioned above.
― dlp9001, Monday, 13 October 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)
Arcadia - The Flame beats Cheap Trick and Bangles Flame submissions.
