Trail of Dead

Read a review of "Source Codes" by Grant Smithies writing for the Sunday Star Times. I get the impression he likes it.

"why the worlds music media got so enthusiastic about the tiresome Gary Glitter meets Slayer racket Of Andrew WK when bands like Trail of Dead exist Ill never know... They're not happy boys. I however am happier than a wallowing pig because this is rock at its most fierce and it makes me feel more alive than Ive felt since the day I first slithered free of the womb."

So is it "scary emotionally exhausting big violent vicious thrilling exhillarating intense "?

"Gary Glitter meets Slayer" = far more promising as a description

1: i understand richard meltzer better than he does because i am an unfunky english fag
2: js has no sense of humour
3: residual bitterness from long-ago girlfriend stuff

I enjoyed Grant's purple prose (especially the part about slithering free of the womb), but I'm sorry -- as much as I don't mind Trail of Dead (and that's about as excited as I can get about them), they just don't translate to my ears in a manner that mirrors Smithies' cathertic epiphany.

Trail of Dead are as high in CMJ's 200 as they are because of the massive amounts of promotion for them. But I guess that's how it always works. (despite that, they aren't that bad)

I am totally amazed at folks' tolerance for this record; I don't know if they've earned a free pass due to "indie cred" or some other horseshit, but _Source Tags_ sounds like the work of some crappy hair metal band (say, Slaughter) cutting and pasting together the tablature of their "favorite" Sonic Youth songs, and giving them a spin AFTER some thoughtful chap took a boot to the throat of the lead singer. So, kiwi, to answer your question, I pull down my shorts and leave a stinking pile of poo, and urge those of you curious about these folks to throw THAT on your CD tray before you waste time & money with their latest musical endeavor.

And could someone please show their drummer/s another drum trick besides the ultra-fancy drum roll? Teach him how to twirl sticks or get him another bass drum to kick or give him a chew toy, ANYTHING but that damn patta patta patta patta CRISH for 6 songs straight.

Dave, your vitriolic hatred of this record makes me so happy! It is aggressively, *offensively* mediocre. You're so right about the drummer, too - why does it not bother me when MBV does it? Or JAMC? Cause I suck the cock of the canon? No, because Trail of Dead are boring (a word I hate to use, but that seems appropriate here). Their music is stagnant; the singer aims for aggression, but achieves only flat whining. Ditto for the instrumentalists.

Is Andrew WK really as good as "Gary Glitter meets Slayer" suggests? Still haven't heard it (him).

I saw Trail of Dead a few years back and they came off as serious poseurs. They had the total rock flop around stage moves down, complete with simulated destructive tendancies, mind you the music wasn't nearly as hot.

It really suprised me when I saw some of these reviews for their new album. I figure people must be hard up for something that rocks and doesn't suck.

i think the comment about trail of dead being a "glam band that copy sonic youth tabs" is dead on. however, i think it adds to their appeal. they really remind me of bruce springsteen and guns'n'roses on this one. ultimately i don't think that's a bad thing, because nowadays, vital rock music is either too cerebral or not cerebral enough. they walk the line between both, and though i suspect none of the members are particularly scholarly or academically-inclined, their music does come off as fairly smart, or at least conscious of itself. i like the fact that they have swagger and agression, but with the ferocity to back it up (unlike say, the strokes).
