BLOODY GRATE

I bought their "No More Art" single back in 2000 and fell in love with it straight away. Their album is ace. I'll agree with the Bats vs Sonic Youth thing, mebbe throw in a little Peter Hook-ness with the bass.. oh it's such a good record.

so is it pop with bits of noise or noise with bits of pop?

which band do they fall nearer to on the spectrum - bats or sonic youth?

keith, Sunday, 19 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh it's more pop with noise. They've got some Life Without Buildings- isms about them but they're a lot more straight-down-the-line. The Sonic Youth side is more prevalent than the Bats side.. what with the crazee tunings and suchlike.

yeah, but's it's as if thurston and kim got together and wrote some three minute structures. LWB discovered them I think.

they make me want to be in a band again - is 27 too old to wanna rock?

Queen G of the Windy Mores, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Queenie, you go girl, Dame Ednas got years on ya. Sounds like you hit the g spot with esoj I must investigate- Aussie Band?

kiwi, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they're from belfast - hang on, got the promo sheet around here somewhere - ah yes, belfast, they organise their own club nights, that's about all I know - they descirbe it as a cross between MBV's Isn't Anything and The Pixies Surfer Rosa, but I think it's more controlled, which is why I like it, as if they've brought order into a sonic youth maelstrom.

God I WISH they were an Aussie band.. the closest thing we've got is Love Of Diagrams (ex-Sea Scouts, fact fans)

electric sound of jim, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sea Scouts! Hot damn, that's the spicy meatball!

OH MY GOD THREAD REVIVAL...

I've had "Let's Get Worse" for a week now and I'm in love with it. Though it's supposed to sound derivative (as mentioned, Sonic Youth being an obvious influence), I can't help getting pulled in by this album, especially the stretch from track 3 ('Floriday Keys') to track 7 ('3.39'). Beautiful sequencing and it just has been a long while since I've felt like I'm inside a "world" an album creates, when everything else just falls on the sides.

I don't know how long this honeymoon will last, but this record just came at the right time in my life (graduating from university in a month, fear of a job/future...).

"DSR":

I can't believe how good this song is. I keep listening to it over and over, thinking it'll start to wear on me. No chance.

I feel like there should be some secret Belfast scene full of bands like this

I still pull this record out a lot - plus it seems so atypical of everything else being released at moment. I adore it, can't wait for their next one..

So what's up with them? I really hope they didn't break up (succumbing to the Tugboat Records curse like Life Without Buildings)

I've never seen Jim so excited!

are we to assume that they're also done?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 13 January 2006 05:37 (twenty years ago)

you could be right - their last release was a split 45 in mid 2004 (there was also another 45 released quite close to it if i recall)

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Friday, 13 January 2006 05:43 (twenty years ago)

actually this http://www.gargleblastrecords.com/index2.php would indicate they're still together with another album on the way.

got the album yesterday, listening to it now

it's a bit more straight ahead than the debut, but not a major departure and pretty recognisable as them. if anything the vocals are a lot more upfront. 'ocean' and 'sea punk' are both great on first listen..
