I do like Sabbath, but The Who are obviously much better.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

obviously?

I am using your worlds, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

this will come down to who got worse quicker

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

That's the Who easy. Sabbath OTOH should win the poll.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

Black Sabbath.

Vision, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

ugh! why, sara3, why?!?!?

"I'ma lose my religion and go secular on you, boy" (Ioannis), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

anyhow, for me, '65 - '67 Who were damn near unbeatable!

Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu (Ioannis), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 10:20 (seventeen years ago)

I love their 69-73 output too. But surely nothing better than "The Who Sellout".

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 10:39 (seventeen years ago)

A Quick One While He's Away >>>>>> all sabbath combined.

And I really like sabbath.

The Wayward Johnny B, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

these polls are dumb. sabbath keep losing for a reason (i.e. they suck)

rjberry, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

The Feeling vs. Black Sabbath...

Mark G, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

ugh! why, sara3, why?!?!?

Partly because, if I'm not mistaken, Black Sabbath's first LP displaced Live At Leeds from the top spot in the UK album charts in 1970, so I thought, hey, fite! I do loves me some Sabbath, but the Who were far heavier without even an inkling that they were trying to be heavy...and were simultaneously scary and hilarious.

Sara Sara Sara, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

Not fair to do to do a poll of two of my favorites ever. I disagree that the Who "were far heavier"-their studio recordings were never heavy-but live they were unbeatable. Gotta go with Sabbath, however.

"...and were simultaneously scary and hilarious."

This probably applies to both. These two bands have a lot more in common than people think. I aways thought that "Spiral Architect" could fit easily onto "Who's Next".

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

The thing is, most of these bands--The Who, Stooges, Queen (not VU)-- sound dated here and there. Black Sabbath is ageless like the monolith in 2001.

Vision, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

this seems like a ridiculous comparison. I love Sabbath through Sabotage but they never made a full album as great as Quadrophenia. On the other hand, the Who never made another album as great as Quadrophenia either.

akm, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

Sabbath win because they never made Quadrophenia or Tommy :)

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

I aways thought that "Spiral Architect" could fit easily onto "Who's Next".

Frankly, I wish it had.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

I cannot get into Sell Out. I own it, I have listened to it, k-punk calls it a crucial forerunner to artpop (or glampop???), but whenever
I put it on the stereo it sounds like washout.

However, I will never tire of "We're Not Gonna Take It" They should ban that song from the radio for fear that it may cause automotive calamities.

Still, Sabbath for me.

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

Also, the Who never had a renaissance like Sabbath did in the Dio era. They were pretty much toast after By Numbers, or after Moonie died, if you're being generous.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

the Who's rennaissance was their staggering live shows in 2000 and endless wire (and yeah, it sits mightily among by numbers and who are you).

Lawrence the Looter, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

the lakers come out to "emminence front", it's pretty rad

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

eminence front is pretty rad, it must be confessed.

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 October 2008 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

it's good struttin' music

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 16 October 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

moon was unquestionably and unfuckwithably brilliant and innovative, but without kenney jones, the Who never woulda gotten funky.

Lawrence the Looter, Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

The Misfits were better than Sabbath but a poll would never prove it.

Chelvis, Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)

glen danzig = better songwriter than lennon

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:35 (seventeen years ago)

oh

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:46 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i dunno..the other day i realized nothing makes me as happy as the misfits, musicwise...like pure joy to me.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:52 (seventeen years ago)

Someone stuck up for Endless Wire on this thread!!! Sorry I didn't catch that before. Oh you wonderful soul! Anyone who (ha! pun intended) defends that album is a friend of mine.

Steely Dan Is Boring And Oh So Safe (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:53 (seventeen years ago)

endless wire is pretty good. i saw them in LA this year and they ended with that "having tea" song it was kinda touching i though.

that solitary "oh" makes me feel like a dick for liking the misfits as much as i do for some reason.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

The HAVING TEA SONG!! !
YES! I'd forgotten that one and it was to die for live, yes it was.

Steely Dan Is Boring And Oh So Safe (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway what's this I hear about a double CD reissue of Sell Out next year?

Steely Dan Is Boring And Oh So Safe (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

supposedly it's coming out in january...word is it's stereo and mono mixes, some of which are dramatically different -- like, entirely different solos and vocalists (e.g., roger instead of pete on "our love was") depending on the mix. and there's many added bonus tracks, but no definitive word yet on what those are.

Lawrence the Looter, Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

"tea and theatre." one of their best songs, period. i can't think of any other band that's had such a brilliant career-self-summing-up song.

Lawrence the Looter, Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

that 'oh' was me not knowing that misfits song, but not wanting to explicitly concede defeat...that's all. sry bout that! :-)

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

I just 5l5k'd itas soon as I stop listening to Jerusalem & the Starbaskets then I will listen to it...

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:28 (seventeen years ago)

itas = it. As

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:28 (seventeen years ago)

I like Black Sabbath a lot, but the Who just have so many more great songs, and a much better lyricist to boot. After the first couple albums, most of Sabbath's best songs tend to run on too long ("Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" comes to mind).

Charlie Rose Nylund, Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

I still don't understand. What does "itas it. As" mean?

Steely Dan Is Boring And Oh So Safe (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i dunno..the other day i realized nothing makes me as happy as the misfits, musicwise...like pure joy to me.

That still doesn't tell me what "itas" is, but thanx.
