80s revival? pfft, that's so 1999. early 90s is where it's at. i want a compilation of pop gems from the early 90s - but not the usual suspects that still get played at parties (as in, every single party at the function centre where i work). for example, as much as i love it, 'groove is in the heart' can not be on this tape.

so far, only one song has earned its concrete place on this mixtape: bel biv devoe's 'poison'.

other nominations:

definition of sound - 'wear your love like heaven'
klf - '3am eternal'
cathy dennis - 'c'mon and get my love'

1990 - my favourite year. 1990 pop - my favourite thing in the world ever. what you need to do is go to your local oxfam and stock up on 'deep heat' compilations. the end of year ones are stuffed full of great forgotten pop things.

faves of the era include 'mamma gave birth to the soul children' - queen latifah 'ghetto heaven' - the family stand 'generations of love' and 'bow down mister' - jesus loves you 'tired of getting pushed around' - 2 men a drum machine and a trumpet 'perfume (all on you)' - paris angels 'shake your head' - was (not was) feat. kim bassinger and ozzy osbourne 'baby's coming back' - jellyfish 'waltz darling' - malcolm mclaren + the bootzilla orchestra oh i could go on + on

MICHELINE, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha HA! Betty Boo used to make me go weak at the knees!

Rick, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes "Hippy Chick"! And "Dub Be Good To Me". And "My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)". Those three are probably my holy trinity of early nineties pop.

Tim, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AND my first album E-VAH: C+C Music Factory, particularly for the now-forgotten hip-house-rock curio "Here We Go (Let's Rock & Roll)".

Tim, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was New Edition's "If It Isn't Love" 1989? I know for a fact that everything released off Johnny Gill's album and Guy's The Future held lockdown positions on the call-in shows in '90. Others: Musto & Bones' "Dangerous on the Dancefloor," 2 Hyped Brothers & a Dog's "Doo Doo Brown," Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "Let the Beat Hit 'Em."

And then of course you have "High Enough" by Damn Yankees.

Andy K, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Soho? Candy Flip? Beats International? Wow!

But you need EZ Posse : Everything Starts with an 'E'?

four years pass...
Oh how I adore early 90's dance/pop, childhood nostalgia!

LondonBeat's 'I've Been Thinking About You'& Euphoria's 'Love You Right' should definetley feature on the mix tape!

Im prone to picking the ultra cheesy ones cuz I was a child in the 90's so my music tastes at the time were not that expansive, thus i loved all the euro-pop stuff. So sorry if they are too 'typical'or mainstream lol.

Gypsy Woman- Crystal Waters
Don't Give Me Your Life- Alex Party
Please Don't Go- K.W.S
Things Can Only Get Better- D:Ream
ANYTHING by 2 Unlimited!!
Slave to the music- Twenty-4-Seven
Dum Da Dum- Melodie Mc
M.r Vain- Culture Beat
The Sign- Ace Of Base
Informer- Snow
Ride On Time- Blacbox
Saturday Night- Whigfield

I know some of these were made after 1993, prob 1994 but still, they are all in the same vein :-)

And shout out to They Eat Their Own.

And, um Texas, Texas had a radio hit then. With slide guitar, which made them "rootsy."
