Motörhead 17

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Easy, Motörhead

Both bands were fantastic in their prime, but only one really changed things in rock all over the spectrum, and has persevered with a relative level of consistency and quality, even if Ace Of Spades (the album) is their peak (IMHO). I still haven't heard a "BAD" Motörhead song.

Hawkwind changed things too of course, but compared to Motörhead? no comparison

Simmer 1 Tire Tread or Dead Crow for 15 minutes (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

Motorhead are really just a one-trick pony. Mind you, it's a very GOOD trick. But chosing between them and Hawkwind is like choosing between one appetiser and a 7-course banquet. Don't be silly.

i dig Hawkwind but Motorhead just mean a lot more to me. (plus the "Killed by Death" video is loltastic!)

t/s: hawkwind vs motorhead

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

Doesn't this basically come down to Hawkwind with Lemmy being as good as Motorhead, with any other line up of Hawkwind being not as good as Motorhead? YES

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

space ritual is better than ace of spades, overkill and bomber which are in turn better than doremi fasola and in search of space

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

"Don't be silly."

Sorry-Motorhead

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I did think we had done this before, but we didn't have a vote.

And dude, you think Black Sabbath are better than the Velvet Underground. How can I take a word you say seriously? ;-)

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

"How can I take a word you say seriously?"

You don't have to. Nobody else does!

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

not true.

Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu (Ioannis), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

Nice of you, Ioannis, but the denizens of the I Love NFL board may beg to differ.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

i like both bands.

but to me....hawkwind can rock as hard as motorhead. but motorhead can't do a lot of the things that hawkwind does.

or maybe this is just a vote for weed over meth.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

I love Hawkwind, and they can rock hard, but I'm not sure they rock as hard as Motorhead.

I'm still torn on this one.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

i think one of the undervalued sides of motörhead is their sense of humor - "sonic attack" is portentous and cool, but witness the awesome poetry of lemmy as he sets up the scene in "shoot you in the back": "western movIES!"

and there's plenty of hawkwimd that's plodding and dull ... even on the classic first five albums ... and how do we rate their later fusion phase? inlight of the fact that the soft machine did it so much better? did anyone do punk speed metal riffing better than motörhead?

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 16 October 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

The gatefold double LP version of Space Ritual sez Hawkwind.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 16 October 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

Hawkwind was great, but Motorhead is iconic.

earlnash, Thursday, 16 October 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

hawkwind.

and there's plenty of hawkwimd that's plodding and dull ... even on the classic first five albums ...

this is lunacy.

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

maybe it is me that is plodding and dull

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 16 October 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

stoners vs. speed freaks (or caffeineholics, in my case)

Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu (Ioannis), Thursday, 16 October 2008 08:10 (seventeen years ago)

Doesn't work. How do you explain me, in that case?

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 16 October 2008 11:15 (seventeen years ago)

speed freaks vs. speed freaks more like

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 October 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

Hawkwind for me again...

Also Space Ritual/Doremifasolatido shirts are way better than England shirts - too many clueless "rock" chicks in my city wearing England shirts who've never even heard a Motorhead album...

Rombald, Thursday, 16 October 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

^^ true

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 19 October 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Motorhead - their peaks may not be as high as Hawkwind, but their lows aren't as crashingly low either. In fact Motorhead don't really have any lows.

snoball, Sunday, 19 October 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

Hawkwind's awesome but I have to be in the mood to listen to them. Motorhead's one of those bands for me like CCR or the Misfits--I can listen to and enjoy them pretty much any time no matter what I'm feeling.

latebloomer, Sunday, 19 October 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

It's a lopsided poll, because the very Hawkwind that most people here are praising was Lemmy-era Hawkwind.

Consider post-Lemmy Hawkwind vs. Motorhead. I'm not saying this should be *the* poll, but it should be a question thrown out there.

Woman Who Force Madonna At House Party To Make Bold Statement (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 20 October 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Charisma label Hawkwind is the best for me - "Astounding sounds/Amazing Music" and especially "Quark, Strangeness and Charm" slay just about any other rock music ever for me, and I have live recordings from around then that are some of my favourite ever music, so I'd vote for Hawkwind based on that alone, even though Motorhead are pretty consistently great, and never got anywhere near as bad as Hawkwind have at their worst.

mte, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)
