Another hopelessly disgusting POLL: Velvet Underground vs. Hawkwind vs. Spacemen 3 vs. JAMC

I personally swear that I will never again start a poll concerning bands vs. bands from here on out, but a good ILXor friend of mine asked (um...begged) me to do this and in the spirit of the utter overall ridiculousness of ILM/ILX, I thought it was only fair of me to indulge this unwise whim of his.

It's up to the people who don't like polls such as this one to make ILM more intersting in some other way. If it makes you bored, don't click on it, etc. Simple stuff.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Velvet Underground 27
Spacemen 3 20
Hawkwind 10
Jesus & Mary Chain 5

Tape Store, Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago)

Here it comes
Can't you hear the sound of it
Just like a big brass drum
And some cunts always scratching it
Just like a voice is pain
Just like the taste is pain
I wish that I could fly
You have to learn to fly

PSYCH! Velvets all the way suckas!

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

oh btw I just googled up the Jerusalem & the Starbaskets myspace page, and holy shit IT IS AMAZING! Every song sounds like a cross between "Sloop John B" and the Clean's "End of my Dream"!!!! They win the poll fersure!!!

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

haha nice comparisons

Listening to Jerusalem & Starbaskets now, sounds remarkably Eno-esque

Well the vocals on "Steeple Against The Sky" are Eno-esque for one thing, and the general approach.

"Everybody Will Help You" is definitely shoegazey.

Steely Dan Is Boring And Oh So Safe (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)

oh alright i can dig that...

Cannabis Zed Omega (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:56 (seventeen years ago)

I vote for all of them!

Pillbox, Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:57 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously, I like Hawkwind and all, but the other three bands in this poll are the holy trinity of rock as far as I'm concerned. I could vote for the Velvets, as they sort of set the template, but I already voted for them against The Stooges and Sabbath. So I'm voting Hawkwind, just to be a dick.

Pillbox, Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:59 (seventeen years ago)

Choosing is made so much harder by that JAMC box set I've been enjoying this past week.

No.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 16 October 2008 06:40 (seventeen years ago)

I HATE YOU. I FUCKING HATE YOU.

THERE IS NO WAY I CAN DECIDE. I SIMPLY CAN'T.

Fuck you. NO.

(Though I might cheat and vote by which band has got me the most food over the years. Let's put it this way - the Velvet Underground have never made me tea. Hawkwind have never picked me fresh mushrooms in the woods. The JAMC never mixed me a White Russian.)

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 16 October 2008 07:54 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm, well the Velvet Underground (well, half of them) were friendly and signed my ticket stub. Actually Sterling was a bit grumpy, but hey.

Decide? Well, I've played the VU more, Spacemen3 struck me as naughty suburban lads with too much disposable income and time and a supplier, Hawkwind I'm not qualified to comment apart from "six foot two? Blimey" and the J&MC changed my life or at the very least told me I was right all along...

So, I abstain.

Mark G, Thursday, 16 October 2008 08:19 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, Hawkwind is the only group among those four to NOT put "Jesus" in a song title!

Velvet Underground > Hawkwind > JAMC > Spacemen 3 > nothing

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 16 October 2008 08:34 (seventeen years ago)

"Spacemen 3 is better than nothing?"

Mark G, Thursday, 16 October 2008 08:35 (seventeen years ago)

Velvet Underground > Hawkwind > JAMC > Spacemen 3 > nothing

OTMFM!

finally, a poll where i can unhesitatingly vote for the Undies! (although i do like the other bands, too)

Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu (Ioannis), Thursday, 16 October 2008 08:44 (seventeen years ago)

quick, someon start a DDRB poll in order to drive Kate completely over the edge.

Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu (Ioannis), Thursday, 16 October 2008 08:46 (seventeen years ago)

As much as I love Spacemen 3 and the JAMC, I do recognise that they are kind of second generation and I'm not going to choose them over the source material.

Which brings me back to Velvets vs. Hawkwind which I SIMPLY CANNOT CHOOSE.

it would be like being asked to choose between the left half of my brain and the right. Or being asked to choose between Art and Science.

How could I do such a thing?

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 16 October 2008 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

Velvets = art, Hawkwind = science, right?

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 16 October 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

Well, yes. I could never choose.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 16 October 2008 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

What about John Cale's bass amp that was going to change the weather patterns? That was science for you.

I dont believe you.

"you're a liar!"

**just works just fine** (Ioannis), Friday, 17 October 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Other than being able to easily eliminate Jesus & Mary Chain this is very hard. Listen to Spacemen 3 the most, VU was probably the most important to me (greatest hits at age 15 blew my young mind) and Hawkwind is just well Hawkwind.

Alex in SF, Friday, 17 October 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

VU are gonna walk this aren't they?

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 17 October 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

when all other comparison fails, go back to the basics: the Velvet Underground made the best rock and roll. So the Velvets.

had to vote hawkwind. have really liked all of these bar JAMC at one stage or another, but only truly have ears for hawkwind these days. they're more gonzo, more ridiculous, more dogged, more fun.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Spacemen 3 gave the Velvets a pretty good run for their money!

Millsner, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

A good poll after all. (judging by the number of votes, that is)

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 07:33 (seventeen years ago)

Whoa, that was really close. I'm sad about the lack of love for Hawkwind, though.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

(I wonder if they would have fared better had Spacemen 3 not been in the running.)

THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT!!!!

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!!!

Thing is, I totally imagine Bob Calvert turning up in samuri gear and Gerard Malanga turns up with his whips and starts dancing towards him and Calvert just looks at him, whips out his revolver and shoots him dead.

In an actual physical fight, Hawkwind could so take the Velvets. Come on, do you think Nico would stand a chance in a cage fight with Stacia?

(that would make a million music geek boys dreams come true, but hey)

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

In an actual physical fight, Hawkwind could probably take out Motorhead, strength in numbers, all that.

Actually, thinking about it, Lou looks like he works out thesedays, JCale looks reasonably handy, and most of Hawkwind looked like they were just about to peg out on that BBC4 docu, so...

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

I'm talking about BACK IN TEH DAY not now obviously, as half of both bands are dead. :-(

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

'Only' one of VU dead, unless you count Andy...

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

... and Nico, dammit.

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

Nico and Sterling are both EX PARROTS. Ditto Andy. So, uh, yeah.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 09:53 (seventeen years ago)

Surprised and saddened by the lack of JAMC love.

ilxor, Friday, 24 October 2008 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

Same. I fully expected them to give a second- or third-place showing.

Millsner, Friday, 24 October 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

JAMC are great, just outclassed on this thread. There's a lot of JAMC love around here.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Friday, 24 October 2008 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

JAMC always do tend to get a bit ignored on polls like these

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 24 October 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'd take the best JAMC over the best Spacemen 3 or Hawkwind
