A couple ofHip hop skits: classic or duds from ILM. Though like Ian White said, they don't really explain the skit.

_De La Soul Is Dead_ has the best skits ever recorded. The entire album is a follow-along storybook about three hoods who beat up a kid to steal his copy of the new De La Soul album. They then spend the album getting more and more bewildered at the tracks they're hearing and end up throwing it the garbage at the end. Brilliant.

where did they come from?

DeLaSoul are most often credited with being the first to the skit thing on 3 Feet High & Rising.

and are there any good ones??

The aforementioned 3 Ft.High is about as much as I can handle.More than not I find them a nuisance.I've even burned CDs just to omit the skits, and it almost always improves it for me.

I still like the "skits" on Tom Waits' Nighthawks at the Diner album. Since that's not a hiphop album, I don't feel guilty putting it into this thread even though it's theoretically been done twice before, already.

The Goats "Tricks of the Shade" had the most ambitious, politically satirical skits.

I hated the skits on de la soul is dead ... far too many and pointless. Destroy. 3 Feet High's are OK.

The skits on the last Redman album almost ruined it for me (until I memorized which tracks to skip over). It's one thing to tag them onto the ends of other songs, but to make them long enough to deserve their own multiple-minute track.. guh. The skits off Busta's -Genesis- aren't that bad. The "breaks" on Dungeon Family related shit are okay. At least they flow with the songs, and tend to be short. I still say... I'd destroy them all if I could.

"where did they come from?"

One man: Prince Paul.

"why is it mainly hiphop artists who like them so much?"

Cheap and easy filler material.

"what's the point?"

Eh, most of 'em are just there to take up space or let the rapper rant for a little bit. Some of 'em allow the rappers to pay direct homage (or just rip off) they're favorite stand-up comics (Pryor, Dolemite, etc.)

"and are there any good ones?? "

Almost all of Prince Paul's are good, cause he actually uses them to tell a story and flesh out a record. Plus he's just a weird, funny motherfucker. But by and large they all suck. Cube's got a couple good ones.

Search: Handsome Boy Modeling School, if only for the one where Chris Elliot's all "I'm a male model- NOT a male PROSTITUTE!" over breakbeats and Beethoven.

I like several of the skits on Ludacris's cds.

My all-time favorite is "Quinton's On His Way" by the Pharcyde.

I'm still looking for the title and artist of a skit whereby an old song is scratched to say "Happiness is having a cyst..." instead of "having a sister". Very bad taste, I know but I NEED to know what this track is. Anyone help me out?
