The un-truncated version of #6 is "This band had a lot of talent and miserable touring equipment..." (Duke/Brock/Underwood/Fowler/Thompson/Humphries core band), 1973-1975

Joe the C.R.E.E.P. Operative (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 18 October 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

Original Mothers. We're Only in it For the Money is my favourite Zappa album.

chap, Saturday, 18 October 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

That wasn't my vote, but it's an awfully close second.

Joe the C.R.E.E.P. Operative (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 18 October 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

#6 - my favourite album is "Roxy & Elsewhere". Best band he ever had, just edging out the original Mothers and the band on "The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life".

snoball, Saturday, 18 October 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

I believe I prefer the sixth option, partly because of some marvellous instrumental work by George Duke.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 18 October 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

Uhh - 6 I guess - Bongo Fury being most played for me, as well as boots from that era.

BlackIronPrison, Saturday, 18 October 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

What snoball said...

Jack Battery-Pack, Saturday, 18 October 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

OG Mothers 4 life

sleeve, Saturday, 18 October 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

Very difficult. Though if this were for least favourite Zappa era, then the Flo and Eddie line-up would get my vote. Its between the original Mothers and the 1988 band for me. 1988 (just 'cos I figure they'll get less votes).

Phil Will, Saturday, 18 October 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

I'm no fan of the Flo & Eddie period either, but for me it's just a little bit better than the Synclavier stuff.

Joe the C.R.E.E.P. Operative (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 18 October 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a Hollywood Persuaders fan.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 18 October 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going with original MOI, but the George Duke/Napoleon Murphy Brock years come in a close second. My wife and I are both fans of the Flo and Eddie stuff, and, of couse just about anythin else he ever did.

Moodles, Sunday, 19 October 2008 04:34 (seventeen years ago)

if I dusted off my critic's cap I'd vote for #2 -- significant-- but in terms of sheer listening pleasure it's #5 w/#6 close behind (not always in the mood for sexx joeks with my guitar wankery)

The wheelchair-jazz era needs some love, so that.

Ha ha, I voted 3 by mistake!

I didn't even realize it was possible to see this movie! Did anyone watch this? Was it any good? Was FZ's music fairly prominent?

On a related note, is 200 Motels ever going to make it to DVD? They managed a CD, so they should be able to make a DVD too, right?

What an awesome movie

Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

Which era does Baby Snakes fit into? I watched that a few times late last year and it was awesome.

Trayce, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

#7 -- it was the Halloween 1977 concert.

Kinda surprised that Läther didn't get #7 at least one vote.

seven years pass...

anybody seen the new doc?

brimstead, Friday, 1 July 2016 22:11 (nine years ago)

Not yet...I'm surprised by the amount of press it's gotten. I wonder if it will take the wind out of Alex Winter's sails.

Considered it.

only thing i know of Zappa aside from Valley Girl is the VHS a mate once showed me while stones of You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore which was amazing and hillarious. so whichever era that was, seemed fine by me.

btw did that film have a soundtrack album? did the film come out on DVD? i could google this shit but you guys explain better.

piscesx, Friday, 1 July 2016 22:48 (nine years ago)

I don't think there was a YCDTOSA film. Sure it wasn't called "Does Humor Belong in Music?"

pleas to Nietzsche (WilliamC), Friday, 1 July 2016 22:58 (nine years ago)

oh shit yeah that was it!

piscesx, Friday, 1 July 2016 23:16 (nine years ago)

There is an album of the same name, but it has mostly different songs. Even on the songs that are on both the video and album, the performances are different.

pleas to Nietzsche (WilliamC), Saturday, 2 July 2016 03:01 (nine years ago)

five months pass...

Been on a binge (see "Non-Wacky Zappa" thread) and it is becoming clear to me that I prefer his Roxy-era band (#2 with a bullet in this poll) to all other eras. What an incredible group of musicians. I guess it doesn't hurt that this period contains--to me, anyway--some of Zappa's best tunes.

Also, is the Flo & Eddie period to Zappa what the Pigpen era is to the Dead? As in, largely obnoxious and best left to the diehards? Discuss.
