jabba hands, Monday, 20 October 2008 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

WHAT IS THIS "FEATURING GWEN STEFANI" SHITE?

my sweet coconut (rogermexico.), Monday, 20 October 2008 06:56 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, whoa whoa!

Mark G, Monday, 20 October 2008 06:57 (seventeen years ago)

You guys never heard the version with Gwen on it? All US pressings from 2000-on feature it instead of the original.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 20 October 2008 07:00 (seventeen years ago)

really?. that blows.

Creeztophair, Monday, 20 October 2008 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

Well, that's a drag. NO COMPULSORY GWEN STEFFANI I SAY!

And I would have voted that one, otherwise.

Mark G, Monday, 20 October 2008 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

So, I voted Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad...

Mark G, Monday, 20 October 2008 08:31 (seventeen years ago)

"Run On"

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 20 October 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

"Porcelain". Because it is the one that lets his techno past shine through the most.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 20 October 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

@Mark G - both versions of "South Side" are in the poll, btw.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 20 October 2008 09:54 (seventeen years ago)

oh buggr.

Never mind, I decided Moby sounds too much like Zilly off Dast&Mut in their Flying machines. So, "heart sad" it is...

Mark G, Monday, 20 October 2008 10:02 (seventeen years ago)

i just realised i've never heard 'Machete' (unless he did it live at the time)

Run On or My (Eno) Weakness tho

Annoying Display Name (blueski), Monday, 20 October 2008 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

run on

the next grozart, Monday, 20 October 2008 10:36 (seventeen years ago)

'honey' is the one with kelis, yeah? that.

lex pretend, Monday, 20 October 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Kelis??? "Honey" has a sampled male vocal, IIRC.

I've never heard of the Gwen Stefani version either, my copy doesn't have it. Was it a later single or something?

Tuomas, Monday, 20 October 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

"Honey" samples "Sometimes" by Bessie Jones

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 20 October 2008 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

I'm voting for "Everloving"

Goddamn this album is so great. Fuck the haterz.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 20 October 2008 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

Ah, okay, so it's a female vocal with a low voice. But no Kelis on the album.

Tuomas, Monday, 20 October 2008 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

She re-recorded the vocal hook for the single's re-release

Annoying Display Name (blueski), Monday, 20 October 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

Really? Sounds kinda stupid, the whole charm of the vocal is that it's so obviously a sample, and from an old recording. Kinda like the rerecorded version of Jürgen Paape's "So Weit Noch Nie".

Tuomas, Monday, 20 October 2008 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, I think this album, like all of Moby's pop albums, would be better if he didn't sing on it all, so that all vocals would be sampled or by guests. He has such a thin, unimpressive voice.

Tuomas, Monday, 20 October 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

That's one of the reasons I prefer Everything Is Wrong to this album... EIW has only two short songs with his own vocals, and on neither of them does he try to be a proper pop singer like he does here.

Tuomas, Monday, 20 October 2008 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

Under the rules at the time, Moby had to sing when he appeared on Top of the Pops, for the track "Natural Blues"... it was not good.

Mark G, Monday, 20 October 2008 11:27 (seventeen years ago)

surely they had long dispensed of that rule by that point and he just wanted to sing anyway

Annoying Display Name (blueski), Monday, 20 October 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

funny: despite their ubiquity, i can't remember what a lot of these sound like.

i might just give the whole thing a listen again. maybe.

so many good songs on this album

(voted "Run On")

Like sicking a little bit of water into my mouth (HI DERE), Monday, 20 October 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

Ohhh lordy, trouble so hard . . .

Yeah, that's the best one, but I can't remember what it's called. Is it Natural Blues?

chap, Monday, 20 October 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

yes.

Mark G, Monday, 20 October 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

"Run On", "Honey" and "Natural Blues" are all so amazing.

Pipe Wrench Fight (HI DERE), Monday, 20 October 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

sympathy vote for "Find My Baby," which was my favorite track off this in 7th grade but maybe not today.

ℵℜℜℜℜℜℜℜℜℜ℘! (Curt1s Stephens), Monday, 20 October 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to start an Everything Is Wrong poll!!!

ℵℜℜℜℜℜℜℜℜℜ℘! (Curt1s Stephens), Monday, 20 October 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

is the premise of this video that moby is a pedo

and what, Monday, 20 October 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Director: "so this song has baby in the title? great we can work with that..."

Annoying Display Name (blueski), Monday, 20 October 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I had the proper distance to really enjoy this album again. I loved it so.

"Honey" gets my vote, but "Run On" is close behind.

jigglepanda.gif (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 October 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

I find the easiest way to enjoy this album is to only listen to individual songs intermixed with others on playlists.

Pipe Wrench Fight (HI DERE), Monday, 20 October 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

"Whispering Wind" pwns everything on this album btw

All artificial new-agey fodder for the marketing folks to overuse on their crappy commercials.

Moka, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

The techno artist Moby, as hip as they come, openly boasted of having sold every track of his breakthrough album "Play" to an advertiser, or to a film or TV soundtrack. The album should perhaps have been called "Pay."

"as hip as they come"

or something, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

All artificial new-agey fodder for the marketing folks to overuse on their crappy commercials.

This is actually why this album is so awesome!

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 24 October 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

Inside = good ambient, but not ambient (if that makes sense)

ecuador_with_a_c, Saturday, 25 October 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

The techno artist Moby, as hip as they come, openly boasted of having sold every track of his album "18" to an advertiser, or to a film or TV soundtrack. The album should perhaps have been called "$18."

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Saturday, 25 October 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Porcelain" 7

Weird, as it's the one on the album that probably sounds the most tied to its time (ie "dated").

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 25 October 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

oh shit I forgot about "Inside," I prob would have voted for that instead of "Find My Baby." "Porcelain" is prob one of the most creative pop songs texturally ever but "Inside" is just some serious out there Pure Moods masseuse soundtrack shit that is unfuckwithable

ℵℜℜℜℜℜℜℜℜℜ℘! (Curt1s Stephens), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

good lord, I certainly didn't mean "one of the most creative pop songs texturally ever." I mean more like I think it's the perfection of its particular kind of '90s aesthetic which was mostly shit but "Porcelain" is one rare exception

ℵℜℜℜℜℜℜℜℜℜ℘! (Curt1s Stephens), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

Man I owned this album back in the day and didn't give a shit about it for the past 5 years or so but now I really want to hear it again.

clotpoll, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

the results look about right though

clotpoll, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)

I would have voted for "Run On," with "Honey" as runner-up.

I still like my idea that this should have been pitched as a narrative concept album about a hip-hop artist whose Honey has been stolen away by the local monarch in a "Prince of Persia" type story: Can my honey come back, Sultan? I wanna rap atcha, Sultan. On one long car ride, I and my lady friend at the time worked out the whole rest of the plot, whose details I can no longer remember - certainly "Natural Blues" was the lamentation of the damsel in distress, singing out the window of the palace tower...

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

"South Side" is awesome, haters

all those electronic boom boom boom stuff (Tape Store), Sunday, 11 April 2010 05:24 (fifteen years ago)

terrible thread title

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 April 2010 05:27 (fifteen years ago)

The shoddy materials of this album shatter like flimsy porcelain.
