Turntable trauma soon to induce vinyl violence

I recently bought a record deck to play all the frustrated vinyl I have amassed, but when I plugged it into the aux audio ports of my midi hi-fi the sound was pathetically quiet and tinny. Also there is a buzz from the speakers when it is turned on. I know I should have talked to someone with a degree of knowledge about it, but I am a fool.

What is wrong? What do I do? please explain in idiot layman's terms, as I thought impedence was a erectionary problem.

Stop listening to bands like Wreck Small Speakers On Expensive Stereos.

use the phono input if you have one, because it has a "pre-amp" built into it that you need in order to boost the signal from your record player. the aux input doesn't have this pre-amp, and that's why your records sound tinny. if you don't have a phono input you'll have to actually buy a separate pre-amp that goes between your record player and the aux input. i know it sounds weird. NAD makes a really good one.

this is also why plugging anything ELSE into a phono input will fuX0r with your system - the signal will get boosted but it doesn't need boosting, so it will sound distorted and too hot and could damage your set-up.

In addition to the left and right channel wires, there may also be a ground wire. Connect that to the ground on your receiver or preamp, and that will help reduce the hum. The ground symbol is a triangle made up of horizontal lines, pointing downward.

Ernest, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, you can only use aux for line level inputs (phono is not line level). Line level is CD, tape, tuner, etc. Phono needs an extra stage of amplification, if you do not have a phono input you will need a little phono preamp, you can get a cheap one for like $50 or something better for anywhere upto $40,000 or so,...

Ernest is OTM about the ground wire. You can also attach your record player's ground wire to any metal bit on your stereo (or pre-amp, if you're going to use one), like a screw or something.

Barnaby - Richer Sounds do a little pre-amp that would be fine. I think it's about 20 quid. if you're just plugging it into an all-in-one system it's not worth spending too much for it. if you ever upgrade to separates, then most amplifiers have a phono input and earth terminal

why it sounds tinny and not just quiet is because phono pre-amps apply an EQ curve (the RIAA Curve mentioned on old records) which boosts the bass - vinyl isn't cut with a flat EQ

Wow - thanks for the grounding tip. I didn't know that and it improves the sound a lot.

Orange, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I inquired today about one and they said there was one for £25 and one for £40. no brand distinction was made but will it actually make a difference?

Barnaby, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't bother answering that one; I didn't see michael's post. I bought some new King Tubby lost classics in preparation for V-day.

Barnaby, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont know if you got Radio Shack in Engerland or not but a cheap one there runs you 15 bucks or so plus more for a 9V battery.
