Taking sides: "The Chronic" vs "Doggystyle"

Having received both through the post today, I was pondering the ILM views on this. God I love "Who Am I (What's My Name)?".

I like Doggystyle better, but I heard it first. A good amount of filler, but the best tracks ("Gin & Juice," "Who Am I" "Lodi Dodi," "Pump Pump") are untouchable.

Doggystyle is better simply because not only does it have Dre's tight beats, Snoop was a much better rapper than Dre was any day of the week. Hell, Snoop wrote half of Dre's best rhymes anyway, and on The Chronic, Doctor Dre doesn't actually appear vocally on any of the last 5 tracks (well, ok, there's Bitches Ain't Shit).

But both are solid. Dre's beats I find a little more enjoyable on Doggystyle, and the songs were more fun. Doggystyle is to me like a party album, especially all those funny in-between song bits.

doggystyle takes the chronic and makes it poppier, slicker, tighter and with more snoop on the mic. and snoop is an even better mc on doggystyle. not a difficult choice, this.

So many pop classics! They just keep on coming: G Funk Intro, Gin and Juice, Tha Shiznit, Murder Was the Case, Who Am I (What's My Name), Gz and Hustlas!!!

the chronic? the only ones i'd listen to are the intro and nuthin but a g-thang. maybe "let me ride" too. but no comparison. both dre and snoop really come into focus on doggystyle.

So why does everybody always see The Chronic on Top 100 Albums of the 90s lists and nobody ever sees Doggystyle????

Doggystyle. Kilian's covered most of the bases, but I'll reiterate that Doggystyle has more inspired rapping (again, since Snoop is on all of it rather than 1/3 of it), and the bodacious party vibe that's just perfect for driving in and out of traffic jams around LA for a whole day.

Plus, going around singing the opening to "Ain't No Fun" always gets you looks in your direction...especially if you can actually sing, like me and my friend A.C....hehe

Tough choice, "G Thing" and "Let Me Ride" are my favorites off either disc, but I feel Doggystyle has more high points overall.. "Aint No Fun," "Doggy Dogg World," "Lodi Dodi," and all the rest of the singles.

I'm still shocked that "Let Me Ride" wasn't included on Death Row's Greatest Hits, but I still find myself listening to this CD a lot more often than both The Chronic and Doggystyle put together. Which brings up the following idea: Just imagine if Dre had compiled the best off both of these and made one super-giant-masterpiece of a record.
