I know, right?, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

some questions

who has heard "sinus poetry" and what is it like?
was "what you say is more than i can say" ever officially released outside of the isolee remix 12?

tricky, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

yeah Tricky it's on Alcachofa CD

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

tricky, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

i bet achso or FZ will win this poll. 808 may just sneak up to take the prize though.

tricky, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

mdma :(

resolved, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

i voted achso although it feels like a bit of a cheat. 808 is a better single.

resolved, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

I hate to bitch but Achso, What's Wrong My Friends and Vasco parts 1 and 2 are 2x12" EPs.

what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

i voted 808 but Achso is probably the one that most interests me in repeat listens.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

i voted achso because it's the one that most interests me on repeat listens

a.q. con (jergins), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

EP = extended play single.

re mdma: no aliases. sorry.

i thought about making it a post-2000 poll, but that would leave out 808.

tricky, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Thé Au Hareme d'archimede is described by Villalobos as an EP as well though!

Ok, I'll stop nitpicking and say that I voted Achso.

what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

fizheuer was the peak

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

no shackleton remix is some sort of bullshit though

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

i think they're officially classed as maxi-singles! xpost

rio (r1o natsume), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

i still think sinner in me remix is the best thing he's done. it's the only thing post-achso that retains my interest (apart from the sei est drum album, go back to making more laser precise micro-tools please!)

rio (r1o natsume), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

i sense a remixes poll

tricky, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

remixes by and remixes of?

the shackleton remix of "minimoonstar" is my favorite thing by shackleton and the best thing on that ep

tricky, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

achso is all i have; i voted achso.

the bourgeoisie and the rebel (Stevie D), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)

Villalospoll

Judging by the first posts, Achso is going to walk this. Think it gets my vote, too.

elan, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

you might not get that one, if you don't have a good system or headphones, because the bass is LOW.

elan, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

unfortunately that video cuts off the last two minutes, which introduces a new bassline.

elan, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

who has heard "sinus poetry" and what is it like?

that's what i wanna know! and the chirurgie boutique record from 1994, too!

For sure one of Ricardo Villalobos dopest tracks is "808 The Bassqueen", released in 1999 on the Lo-Fi Stereo record label. But if you want to listen to the blueprint for this dope and in demand track, you should listen to the A1 track "Le Spleen For E." of this EP. This must be the original and first version of "808 The Bassqueen", here you can hear the real 808 acid bass. Killer tune.

Was the above review useful to you? Yes No (report)

elan, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

i voted 808 cos it's lovely. think my favourite remix is 'cell phone's dead'. never really got all the 'sinner in me' love but maybe that's cos i have a bit of a thing against dave gahan's voice that i can't put my finger on. also i have a suspicion that 'blood on my hands' remix may be the best thing he's done though admittedly i haven't heard everything.

or something, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

Enfants, mostly because hearing the 'yah-yah-ay-ya!' bit unexpectedly on the dancefloor has made me happy so many times.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

In another instance of 808 vs achso, I think I'm going with 808.

Their time's limited, hard rocks, too (mehlt), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

In a way I kind of hope 808 The Bassqueen wins to prove to the people that think dude's just throws around nutty percussion lines for 15+ minutes that he's much more.

Their time's limited, hard rocks, too (mehlt), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

I never bothered to find out if "Que Belle Epoque" and "Que Belle Epoque 2006" are significantly different. I've only heard the latter but it's a favourite of mine. For me this comes down to:

- 808 the Bassqueen
- Que Belle Epoque (2006?)
- Frank Meuller Melodram
- Achso
- Enfants (Chant)

With "Fizheur Zizheur" slightly below those.

I'm leaning towards "808 the Bassqueen" but want to listen to these again before making a decision.

Tim F, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

dude's tunes are long ergo you get a week to decide. (i am going to relisten as well)

tricky, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

by the way, not that i expect anyone to vote for it, but this - tomorrov cocktail / ananas (perlon) 2000 - is a split 12"

resolved, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

although i suppose he has an involvement in the split side :)

resolved, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

what has happened to my purist poll?!

tricky, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

tricky, 'what you say' was released on 12 as halma, so it's a contender here too!

lucas pine, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

I really wish I could vote one but I've only listen to 5 of these at most. I'll just wait and download the top 5 when the results come in.

Moka, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 06:01 (seventeen years ago)

still haven't really "got" achso. stuck between fizheuer zieheuer and bassqueen...

winston, Thursday, 23 October 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

I never bothered to find out if "Que Belle Epoque" and "Que Belle Epoque 2006" are significantly different.

Not really.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 23 October 2008 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

The bass in that one is so stunning. And how much is saved for the end, and how little it takes to create such a difference..

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 23 October 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

Such an amazing ending.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 October 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

i'm going to be the only one who voted for 'what's wrong my friends', aren't i? it's so fantastically creepy, though.

king lame (c sharp major), Thursday, 23 October 2008 08:22 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 27 October 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Hate to be pedantic but I noticed For Disco 2 isn't listed. I don't know how many votes it would have gotten but "Mormax" off it is definitely one of my favourite Villalobos productions for sure (I'd venture to say the breakdown in the middle of it is one of the man's finest moments).

Their time's limited, hard rocks, too (mehlt), Monday, 27 October 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah! Mehlt I knew it was about time for me to agree with you on something again.

I still don't think i'd vote for it but "mormax" is like top five original productions for sure.

Tim F, Monday, 27 October 2008 04:32 (seventeen years ago)

why isnt easy lee on here?

joe 40oz (deej), Monday, 27 October 2008 04:52 (seventeen years ago)

Not a "single" so much as... what's that word record companies use these days for album tracks they expect to get radio play when they can't be arsed releasing singles?

Whereas "What You Say Is More Than I Can Say" came out on a 12 inch that preceded Alcachofa.

Tim F, Monday, 27 October 2008 04:55 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway Deej have you heard "808 the Bassqueen"??

Tim F, Monday, 27 October 2008 04:56 (seventeen years ago)

the original "easy lee" was never released as a single. there was only a remixes ep. (alcachofa remixes)

i didn't include the for disco only stuff because i wanted to restrict the poll to villalobos productions only (though i messed up by including the "tommorov cocktail" single which is actually a collab as resolved noted). i dislike polls on ilm in general and i dislike them even more when there are so many choices that the vote either gets too split or many choices receive zero votes.

"what's wrong my friends?" is one of my favorites and i am a bit disappointed that people aren't talking about his perlon releases more. they're all a bit more chance-y and adhere to the perlon take on house, but i always find them to be a treat.

tricky, Monday, 27 October 2008 05:11 (seventeen years ago)

also, count me in as a fan of how villalobos almost always waits to drop the bass.

tricky, Monday, 27 October 2008 05:18 (seventeen years ago)

the alcachofa tools single is so ace (both "waiworinao" and "fool's garden" blow my mind. the former is villalobos doing basement jaxx and the latter is him doing depeche mode ("waiting for the night to fall").) i might not be able to vote in my own poll.

tricky, Monday, 27 October 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

it might be cool if polls here had input boxes for numbers instead of radio buttons then you could rank stuff and everything wouldn't have to be the best or the worst or some binary choice blah blah blah.

tricky, Monday, 27 October 2008 05:34 (seventeen years ago)

What happened to "What You Say Is More than I Can Say"? Wicked release, probably would have gotten my vote over "808," but just barely.

pshrbrn, Monday, 27 October 2008 10:35 (seventeen years ago)

"what you say..." is aka "halma" as lucas noted above. i was listening to it last night and was taken aback at how fast it is.

tricky, Monday, 27 October 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

Have not heard anything pre 808 ... looooove Achso, though, Sieso in particular. going with that.

HPSCHD, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

52 votes i am pretty impressed. i voted for FZ.

tricky, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

for disco only 2 is probably my favorite example of his "out" side, but i wouldn't have picked it over 808. it's got some really great rhythms and melodies and dramatic moments.

elan, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

who voted for sinus poetry??? what's it like?
