Taking Sides: Ambient - KLF vs Aphex Twin vs the Orb

I just got a copy of KLF's "Chill Out" and can't believe what I've bin missing out on for so long! I've always been a fan of SAW2 as well as 1 (though i wouldn't say it was strictly ambient). Not so familiar with the Orb's back catalogue (I only have UF Orb and UF Off).

So what I'm saying, who are the kings of early to mid 90's Ambient? This isn't restricted to these three bands, but i would like to hear your opinions on the former's ambient output (SAW2, Chill Out, UF ORB and others).

Ugh! Sorry! My grammar's absolutely appauling today if. Something to do with the fact that I am taking my finals at the moment and it's mucking up my language skills as well also too.
apologies. Oh - and new answers pleeeyase!

I love this kind of sound. Off the top of my head, here are a few ambient albums that I really like.

Global Communication- 76:14 Skylab- #1 Spacetime Continuum- Sea Biscuit Irresistible Force- Global Chillage Biosphere- Substrata Paul Schutze- New Maps of Hell The Orb- UFOrb (my personal favorite of theirs)

There are some people that are making this kind of music today, albeit with a bit different tone. Check out music on the Kompakt label, which is run by Wolfgang Voight (aka Gas aka Mike Ink). Best place to start is with the Pop Ambient Cds, which are compilations.

You need to get Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld right now.

Ian, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ultraworld, certainly, though I'm partial to Orbus Terrarum - more organic-sounding. Yes to Substrata and 76:14 and Pop by Gas. Also Autechre's Amber for something with a few more beats, and The Stars of the Lid for no beats at all, just endless drones.

I second the "Skylab #1" recommendation. Wonderful album.

also, slightly more recend classics

Future Sound of London : Life Forms

William Orbit : Pieces in a Modern Style

Plaid : Rest Proof Clockwork

I haven't heard Irresistible Force's- Global Chillage, but I know that the first two tracks on the previous album 'Flying High' are pretty much peerless, especially the second track which is my all time favourite coming down trac

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Khan had an amazing ambient album as "Global Electronic Network". Not sure what to compare it with but I love it. Very electronic but very ambient.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chill Out is still my favourite in this line. The titles alone are gorgeous.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure if this was part of the qu but ambient aphex, 'selected ambient works 85-92',( and vlm 2) also 'I care because you do'. I second the Autechre Amber recommendation... like a summer afternoon in heaven.

two years pass...
Is it true that Alex Patterson was involved in the making of Chill Out?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm partial to the Orb in general. Orbus Terrarum, Live '93 and Blue Room are close to my heart.

Gas - Pop
This is beautiful.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Native - i think he might have been.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Aphex Twin's 'On' is the best single track of all time. It's all downhill from there.

Orb: Adventures Beyond... and the Peel Sessions are both amazing.

cdwill, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Alex Paterson was involved. He was involved in Space, but Chill Out was Jimmy Cauty & Bill Drummond I think.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I've just checked on the album, it's just Jimmy Cauty & Bill Drummond credited.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I've just checked on the album, it's just Jimmy Cauty & Bill Drummond credited.

Right. I was just wondering if the rumors were true or not. The timing is about right -- and Patterson was DJing at Drummond's club around then...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex Paterson worked on Space with Jimmy Cauty, but he had his contributions rubbed off of it; they went their separate ways before it was released. There are other tracks like Alex vs the KLF and Brooklyn New York that feature the pair of them.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

What are those on? Singles? And does the Space w/ LX version exist?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No idea if the Space one exists. I've got the other two on some bootleg. They're not great; fairly generic acid house tracks.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Would that be "Anthology 2"?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the chap.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, I'll dl it anyway.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

this seems like a decent time to mention "Orb vs Coldcut". there's a 14 minute edit of some KISS show they did that's phenomenal. ends with the bucket & bong mix of "fast forward the future".

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree; that's a great mix.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Space exists, I've seen physical copies of it. I cannot tell you if it was a boot, however.

Chill-out is mad over-rated.

weird to think that this shit was trendy just a little over 10 years ago.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not the original Space that we're talking about; it's the "pre" original with Alex Paterson on it. I own an original of Space; well, I don't really. I borrowed it off of a friend in 1991 and he's never had it back. He'll thank me one day if I see him again; he had his entire CD collection nicked at Uni. Luckily, I have his originals of Space and Chill Out. If you read this Andrew, let me know and you can have them back.

I find your lack of faith in "Chill Out" disturbing.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

So, in essence, you don't have the pre-original, am I correct?

BTW, thoughts on the Orb's appearance on Kompakt?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 25 November 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

On that subject -

There's something reassuting about the sound of their new track 'Lunik'. It could just be that it has 'Singing In The Rain' on it.

Excerpt here

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks, alba. i needed that.

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 25 November 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I dl'd it and found it to be pretty a-ok...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Chill Out is sooo good.

But can I reitterate just how good The Irresistible Force's 'Flying High' album is.

Also worth checking out is 'Woob 1194' by... Woob!
