Aquacrunk - The sound of urban glasgow/please explain this to me

"The music itself is made of slowed down, low-slung beats, with lashings of electronic mutterings and morphing basslines on top. In terms of influences the music owes as much to early Rephlex and Underground Resistance releases, as they do to the sound of crunk stars like Lil' Jon or Young Buck.

So why has hip-hop from the American south mixed so well with electronica, and in Glasgow of all places? Richard Chater, who runs Stuff records and put out Jagz the Smack, isn't surprised: "Certain forms of music just suit Glasgow", he says. "Drum'n'bass never really took off here and neither has bassline house. But hip-hop and techno have always fitted in nicely. What Rustie is doing is an extension of that. People up here regained their interest in hip-hop when it started to get more interesting with producers like J Dilla, Madlib and Timbaland all doing something more energetic and fun."

rustie rules, but trust me, no more than a handful of people in glasgow are calling it or talking about aquacrunk.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

what are they calling it?

titchyschneiderMk2, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

i thought this stuff was just 'wonky'.

titchyschneiderMk2, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

the subbie can hold 600 people??

Rusties output has been awesome so far, to me its a kind of chrome-shard, less precious counterpoint to what Jackson & His Computer Band has produced. Popular descriptors could also include: 'funky crunched glass', 'FM win-thesis' and 'clutterfucked'.
I also especially like that he and Hudson Mohawke look like dudes who cant dance.

the subbie can hold 600 people??

official capacity 450 but there have been more crammed in. we had 690 in once but that was post smoking ban so there were always at least 50 outside at any one time.

Aquacrunk was apparently just a name Rustie invented on the spot to give people from The Wire something to chew on. That said, he is amazingly talented and very original.

two months pass...

was gonna make a new wonky thread but thought this would do. finally got round to listening to that hyperdub special on MAH - fucking amazing. makes up for all the shit elevator dubstep that she plays.

i dunno if its that im not listening to the right stuff but i find a lot of these guys hit and miss - hud mo has a few good tracks but a lot of it seems like prefusey versions of dilla or something.

Have you heard his Tweet remix? Best thing he's done imo

Number None, Monday, 12 January 2009 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

i think so. it was okay from what i remember. i like what jokers doing more than hud mo i think. if rustie has more like the first ep in the can, his album could be pretty great.

Yeah, Joker get's better with every release i reckon. "Digidesign" (which i think is out next month) is excellent, quite melodic as well

One thing I like about Hudson Mohawk is that, of all those vaguely IDMish guys fuckin with R&B, he's one of very few who gives off the impression that he "gets" the source material.

Tim F, Monday, 12 January 2009 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

not sure if jokers like that but i get the sense he gets - and genuinely enjoys - most hip hop and R&B. although i think im more interested in this sort of stuff when it has more of a distance. i dont need them to 'get it'.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 12 January 2009 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

What I've heard of Joker was on more of a grime tip (v. good as well). Does he have R&B-ish tracks?

Tim F, Monday, 12 January 2009 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

"Play Doe" and "Digidesign" are sort of R&B-ish
