Fantastic idea for a poll.

Roasted Ghost (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 23 October 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

Crying Town

Dang! Dang! Dang! Dang! Dang! Dang! Dang! Dang!

cello cello cello cello cello cello cello cello cello cello cello cello cello cello

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 23 October 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

Also this performance is one of the main reasons I became a musician.

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 23 October 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

You ever heard the Beatles' version of V. ?

Mark G, Thursday, 23 October 2008 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

Adamn knows it!!! It's ALL about "cello cello cello cello cello" which was the moment when I knew my vote had been cast, even though this entire clip on You Tube gave me goose bumps.

Roasted Ghost (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 23 October 2008 09:19 (seventeen years ago)

soon soon soon be home

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 23 October 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

See, this is one of my all-time fave Who songs, but I never pull it out, because the album it's on is something I don't care about any of the other songs on. So it sits on my shelf. :(

A high watermark for Townshend, to be sure.

Roasted Ghost (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 23 October 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

You don't?

What about..

Mark G, Thursday, 23 October 2008 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

Well I'm about to pull out the Kinks in a minute, thanks for reminding me! ;)

Roasted Ghost (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 23 October 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I'm about to receive that 10CD "Pye Albums" box set, £30 if you can find one, hray.

Mark G, Thursday, 23 October 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

Who ate all the Pyes

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 October 2008 10:08 (seventeen years ago)

Precision Records and Tapes did.

MacElby's Puddin'© (stevie), Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

when i saw this as a kid, was CONVINCED that moon sang the first lines (as opposed to miming along like a gurning muppet)

MacElby's Puddin'© (stevie), Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

for me it's the bit where townshend sings 'it's like a dream to be with you AGAIN' for the second time
but for me the rock and roll circus version is a high watermark of perfection. the whole performance just defies belief.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:13 (seventeen years ago)

Oh my god, I didn't know such a Pye box set existed. Oh joy!

Just let me get Something Else on my iPod forthwith and I'll get back to you as soon as I can, cheers!

Also this is embarassing because this is supposed to be a Who thread.

Roasted Ghost (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

Also happy day-late belated birthday, X O'Skeleton! No one really caught on to your recent birthday, too much.

Roasted Ghost (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

And I thought that was a terrible shame.

Roasted Ghost (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:15 (seventeen years ago)

i also love the bit where moon is miming along to 'back in your arms, away from all harm', or tossing his tom tom over his head, or drumming with water spraying up from the kit

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

the "you are forgiven" coda of cascading voices on live at leeds is like pure redemption, man.

provincial rube. Which you are (negotiable), Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

thank you bimble, i wasn't going to mention it but someone brought up the ilm average age thing

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

I've somehow never heard of this song or the album from which it cometh, despite having long held an appreciation of The Who. Thank you! I definitely need it in my life.

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 23 October 2008 11:43 (seventeen years ago)

You Are Forgiven has been pounded into my brain by Billy Childish so many times I couldn't not vote for it.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

First post on this thread is Exhibit A in the case of "why the Stones didn't release RnRC for years"

snoball, Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

they blew them off the stage apparently, although i must admit i've never seen the stones contribution

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

It's Jagger prancing about like a twat in body paint

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

And Brian Jones pretending to play guitar (he had a "sprained wrist" or something).

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

But Dirty Mac is awesome. So is Taj Mahal!

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

YOU GOT TA DIG IT BAAYBEY

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

Also has Tony Iommi playing guitar with Jethro Tull? Am I right about that? What's the story behind that?

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

Remedy!
BTW is the Rock and Roll Circus version everyone's favorite, as it is mine?

Jazzbo, Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

Yes!!!

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

it's a toss-up between that version, or the Live At Leeds version, but it's certainly not the album version.

some dude, Thursday, 23 October 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

Who's Next and everything after it sucks ass compared to this.

Jazzbo, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

i wouldn't say Who's Next sucked ass at all, nor Quadrophenia for that matter. I was just listening to The Punk and the Godfather, the bit where's he's looking sadly at the seats in an auditorium 'they all belong to me, you know' and then that explosive riff crashes back in
But this version of Quick One is one of my favourite things. Ever. So anything that came after must be anticlimax in that respect.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I like some of Quadrophenia. But I've grown to genuinely hate Who's Next, which just bores me to no end. I definitely prefer the earlier, weirder, artier Who. Sell Out is far and away my favorite album, and all the 60s singles are gold.

Jazzbo, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

The Who Sells Out will always be the ultimate Who moment for me.
At least, the version with Jaguar added on.
A Quick One is a good lead in, though. I bought the cheapo Quick One/Sell Out 2lp package at a used record shop when I was a teen. It was a good buy. "So Sad About Us," "Whiskey Man," "Happy Jack," all classic songs on the Quick One lp.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

I repeat Tripmakers last comment without revision.

Mark G, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

...except Happy Jack is not on mine. (US Only?)

Mark G, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

Yes

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:32 (seventeen years ago)

Also happy day-late belated birthday, X O'Skeleton! No one really caught on to your recent birthday, too much.

Can I get a happy TWO-days late belated birthday? :)

Me, I love the whole thing, but today I'm gonna vote for "We Have A Remedy." (Byrds do Gilbert & Sullivan)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

...except Happy Jack is not on mine. (US Only?)

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

I meant to include that in the US the album is actually called "A Quick One (Happy Jack)"

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, and I'll wish you a happy birthday, Myonga.
I found a cheap used copy of Hard Attack on cd so I retired the scratched cdr copy you mailed me.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

has to be You are Forgiven.

dan selzer, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)

my favourite extra on sellout has to be Melancholia. it's better than a lot of stuff on the original album and one of the who's lost treasures

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

YOU ARE FORGIVEN

Euler, Thursday, 23 October 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

"Also has Tony Iommi playing guitar with Jethro Tull? Am I right about that?"

Yes, he left Sabbath (then called Earth) for about 2 weeks which coincided with the filming of this. Didn't play on it, becuase Tull's performance is mimed and the guitar parts are played by the previous guitar player. After this, Iommi came to the conclusion that he hated Anderson and missed Ozzy and the boys and went back. He does say he learned how to be a dictator from Anderson during his short time in Tull.

The Who clip posted at top is fucking awesome.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 23 October 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

It's hard to imagine Tony Iommi in Jethro Tull. He must have been a celebrity when he got back to Brum!

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 October 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

this song is so fucking awesome, esp. the RnR Circus version. voted "Crying Town" mostly for the ooooo-weeeoooo-weeooooo-oooo-ooos

Mr. Que, Thursday, 23 October 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

You Are Forgiven. My fave four power chords ever (4:51-4:59).

Jake Brown, Thursday, 23 October 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

Also we should have a poll on the best parts of that Cobwebs and Strange video. I vote the Steve Martin bubbles chokehold.

Jake Brown, Thursday, 23 October 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

my favourite extra on sellout has to be Melancholia. it's better than a lot of stuff on the original album and one of the who's lost treasures

The version on Scoop I is also particularly excellent.

Jake Brown, Thursday, 23 October 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

I definitely prefer the earlier, weirder, artier Who.

"Baba O'Riley" DEFINES weird and arty.

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 23 October 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

I've never liked that stupid gypsy violin bit tho

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 October 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

I had a "eureka" moment when I first saw the R&R Circus clip and realized that was the version Wes Anderson used in Rushmore.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 23 October 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

That clip perfectly encapsulates everything amazing and jaw-dropping about the Who.

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 23 October 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

"Baba O'Riley" DEFINES weird and arty.
Maybe when it first came out. Now, "Baba O'Riley" defines bloated, canonical, dull-as-dishwater AOR. I mean, I liked it in high school but that's it.

That clip perfectly encapsulates everything amazing and jaw-dropping about the Who.
Now this I can get behind.

Jazzbo, Thursday, 23 October 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

The use of "You Are Forgiven" in Rushmore might be my favorite thing in any movie.

Vaguely Threatening CAPTCHAs, Thursday, 23 October 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

favourite thing Wes Anderson has ever done, that's fer sure!!!!

Goofus vs. Gallant (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 23 October 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

("my" favourite thing)

Goofus vs. Gallant (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 23 October 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

(tho putting "Seven and Seven Is" in the beginning of Bottle Rocket was sheer genius...as was the scene in the Royal Tenenbaums with that song from A Charlie Brown Christmas...Those are my three favourite moments in Wes Anderson movies.)

Goofus vs. Gallant (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 23 October 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

(but Max getting arrested in school destroys all)

Goofus vs. Gallant (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 23 October 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

It's Jagger prancing about like a twat in body paint
I think Mick is a joke with all that... ah never mind

And Brian Jones pretending to play guitar (he had a "sprained wrist" or something).
I seem to remember poor Brian sitting in the audience with the mentally disadvantaged kids and looking like he fit right in.

Anyway, I can't pick right now, although I'm leaning towards the obvious "Cellos" of VI.

Oh yeah, Happy Birthday, MVB.

Retrato Em Redd E Blecch (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 23 October 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe when it first came out. Now, "Baba O'Riley" defines bloated, canonical, dull-as-dishwater AOR.

Yeah, I always thought it was weird that, after it first came out, they removed it from circulation and replaced it with that Grand Funk outtake (hence the "dull-as-dishwater AOR").

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 23 October 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

It's a shame that every Who thread, even if it's about just one particular song, eventually turns into the same boring '60s Who vs. '70s Who argument.

some dude, Thursday, 23 October 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

I know, sorry. I just always liked all Who, and never really saw much of a division (if any) between 60s and 70s Who.

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 23 October 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i wasn't giving you a hard time specifically, you were fighting the good fight.

some dude, Thursday, 23 October 2008 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

I think I just listened to Who's Next so much in my younger days that I got sick of it. I didn't dig into the Who's earlier stuff until years later, so it still sounds fairly fresh to me.

Jazzbo, Thursday, 23 October 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

Just listened to "Who Are You" the other day and was surprised at how good it was, so I'm not about to write off later Who. For instance whenever I hear "Eminence Front" I enjoy it alot more than I should.

NO ONE can top the raw melodic symphonic punk madness of early Who tho. See "Pictures of Lily".

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 23 October 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

I remember being 10 or whatever, my dad had this copy of The Kids Are Alright he taped off TV and we watched it over and over again. It gets to that part with Keith Richard wearing an eyepatch saying "And now, ladies and gentlemen, dig the 'Oo" and the whole thing is framed in a tiny box with marquee lights going around it. That shit was magic.

You Are Forgiven. My fave four power chords ever (4:51-4:59).

― Jake Brown, Thursday, October 23, 2008 11:58 AM (4 hours ago) Bookmark

Hell yes. I like the stuff around 6:55, right after "Come on, baby!!!", right before he goes into all those whirlwinds.

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 23 October 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
