Classic, odd, and interesting milestone of the original disco era?

I find it to be a thrilling powerhouse, myself. Definitely a "sum greater than the parts" situation.

I assume that the version on the On The Radio compilation of Donna's was the same. It certainly was long enough (hahah Enough Is Enough).

The 7" version was on Casablanca, the 12" version on CBS.

When I was a trainee cabaret singer - no shit - I used to hear this a lot. And no matter how many times I've heard it, it's still fantastic. Vocal interplay bits not done justice by most club singers, it has to be said.

I love the rock and roll guitar at the end, that is the piece de resistance, I think.

I can't get past the opening "It's raining, it's pouring/My love life, is borING!!!" Babs couplet.

I used to HATE this, and agreed with Naive Teen Idol, until I noted how the disco grandiosity undercuts that opening.

It's still not my favorite Summer track, and Streisand's "Woman in Love" and "Guilty" are superior.

I've always been a little underwhelmed with this one too, which is too bad, both because it had such promise, and because it was basically the final "epic" of Summer's career, and therefore the end of an era. ('70s become '80s, Casablanca becomes Geffen, extended album tracks de-emphasized in favour of hit singles, etc.) And yeah, I hate that initial Streisand verse too. But those voices sure sound great together, whether they're belting out that chorus or just wailing freestyle - when they come swooping down and hit that exhilarating chorus together, it's like "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" or "East-West" or something.

Let's not forget that k.d. lang and Erasure's Andy Bell did a remake of it. (You can find it on the soundtrack to the movie The Coneheads if you can't live without it.)

The main flaw with this song is that there are 10-20 greater Donna Summer disco tracks that don't require an accommodation with Streisand. And life is short.

Although I disagree with you, that was hilarious!

New version by Velma Davis and Amber is AWFUL! In fact, ALL versions not by the original duo are awful.
