Both are fascinating in their own way, but I have to go for "If I Could Only Remember My Name". Great 5:1-mix btw. One of the best I've heard of something that old.

'If I Could Only Remember My Name' has got loads more sentimental value for me

psychgawsple, Thursday, 23 October 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't heard all of the crosby record but i like what i heard. however, i doubt any of it could match strength of strings which completely obliterates me every time

velko, Thursday, 23 October 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

no other, definitely. IICORMN is good, but kind of in a tiny niche for me. plus even though i listened to it yeterday, all i can call to mind is atmosphere, not actual tunes?

Everybody's saying music is LOVE, MAN.

While I go for David Crosby overall, no single track on that album is as strong as "Some Misunderstanding)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 23 October 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

Inspired to poll this because yesterday, i finally got IICORMN - and now I can hardly stand to listen to anything else - and also played No Other, a record I've loved for ever and, for the first time I can remember, it didn't quite do it. So, three days ago the answer would have being obvious, now, i don't know....... the idea of a David Crosby record being a work of genius doesn't sit easily with me because - Byrds apart - I've never had much time for him, and I always though Gene was the real genius in that band.

BTW, does anyone know who plays what on each track on If I Could Only...? has to be Neil on Cowboy Movie, right?

from http://www.4waysite.com/articles/IICORMN_SB97.htm

Track: Cowboy Movie [8:02]

Recorded in: Heider's Studio C

Another song that almost got away.... Recorded completely live, and an early rough mix as well... Crosby pulled this song out only twice (never demoed) and blew all of out minds....

David Crosby-Vocals & Electric Guitar & Electric Guitar Double
Jerry Garcia-Lead Guitar Left and Right
Phil Lesh-Bass
Mickey Hart-Drums
Bill Kreutzmann-Tambourine

Neil Young is all over that album, too. So is the rest of CSN&Y.

Didn't know that 'Cowboy Movie' was essentially a Grateful Dead jam, though

psychgawsple, Friday, 24 October 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

Also, Joni Mitchell, Jorma Kaukonen, and even Michael Shrieve...

who was also reccomended in the beardo/beach/balearic/hippie thread that probably birthed this poll

psychgawsple, Friday, 24 October 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

ooh, really tough call. I'' go for the Croz tho. Love that guy. Not that I don't like it, but No Other isn't his best solo record IMO.

ian, Friday, 24 October 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

Hmmm...haven't heard all of If Only..., but will remedy that by poll's end.

I tend to think that either No Other is overrated, or is just not my cup of tea, but, having said that, Lady of the North is pretty sublime.

Wow - single best thing I've ever heard by the Dead, then.....

Clark had major surgery in the spring of '88, in which half his stomach and some of his intestine were removed because of a serious ulcer.

On November 20, 1994, David Crosby received a liver transplant at the UCLA Medical Center.

Stills is a notable absentee actually. In all the pics on the inside sleeve mock-up of a photo album - no Stills. Don't know if he was doing a solo album at this time himself or whether it was just one of those periods when he was getting on everyone's nerves and they didn't want him around. ;)

I remember this topic coming up on the Steve Hoffman board one time, and someone suggested that IIOCRMN was the best solo album from an ex-Byrd rather than the conventional wisdom of 'No Other'. I'd agree; I mean, 'No Other' is great, but IIOCRMN is greater, IMO.

I'm a White Light man myself, but I guess I'll plump for No Other by default.
