Now: Absu and Impiety. With Aura Noir as honourable mention.

All time: Slayers first three, Sepultura's "Schizophrenia" and "Beneath The Remains", Kreator first three, Destruction "Infernal Overkill", Dark Angel "Darkness Descends", Sodom "Obsessed By Cruely". I know, not terribly original, these are on everybody's list.

Of course it's between "the big four": Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. Metallica is disqualified due to their lamentable career trajectory since the black album. Megadeth's first two albums (notably PEACE SELLS) come close, but like Mustaine's erstwhile peers in Metallica, that band went a bit pear-shaped too. Anthrax seemed to lose their way a bit after jettisoning Joey Belladona (but SOUNDS OF WHITE NOISE with Armoured Saint's John Bush on vox is unimpeachable), so I'm going to say: SLAYER WINS!!!!

Hmm by that rationale, Slayer is also disqualified because of their lametable career trajectory. Remember "Undisputed Attitude" ("hey, punk is hot!") and "Diabolus In Musica" ("hey, nu-metal is hot!")?

All great early/mid 80s thrash bands have either fallen from grace or split up in the 80s. Sepultura delivered a massive disappointment with "Arise" (not to mention "Chaos AD" and "Roots"...), The German Thrash triumvirate Kreator/Sodom/Destruction discovered industrial (which they could not play), Megadeth, Metallica, Dark Angel, Anthrax, Testament, Whiplash, Slaughter, Annihilator, etc etc.

I must be using a different definition of thrash than anyone else; I've always considered it stuff like DRI, Cryptic Slaughter, GISM, Amebix, Hirax -- 80s skater metal. Slayer/Kreator/Sodom are all just sort of a speed/death/80's metal genre I just think of as "Slayer-like". Using this definition, my favorite thrash album would have to be "Seven Churches" by The Possessed. But thrash, the way I understand it, is pretty much a dead genre outside of Japan. Hellchild is pretty good. The best thing about modern thrash is the names of the japanese bands: Catasexual Urge Motivation, Bathtub Shitter, C.S.S.O. (Clotted Symmetric Sexual Organ), but hearing them is generally anticlimactic. Absu is an interesting choice; they are quite thrashy but I've never thought of them as anything other than black metal. They are great though.

yeah, but Undisputed Attitude, I never thought of as a cash in. Just a way of proving that much of modern hard metal has roots in punk. Plus it's one of the most intense punk albums i've ever heard. Megadeth sucked. Metallica were so-so until after the Black album, yeah... Anthrax I have no idea.

Anyone heard the Japanese band Sigh? Definitely some of the best Thrash I've ever heard - plus psychedelic goodies too!

ooohh, yeah, "imaginary sonicscape" is amazing - tends to fall prey to the post-mr. bungle "look! a reggae part! look a trip-hop part!" muso syndrome, BUT no one has successfully blended traditional euro-metal melodicism with ripping thrash metal idiom to this degreee since carcass's "heartwork."

Siegbran, how does Infernal Overkill compare to Eternal Devastation? I quite like the latter album.

I've listened to Kill 'Em All once so far and it didn't do a lot for me. Am I alone?

"Imaginary Sonicscape" is great, no doubt about it, but isn't thrash. Sundar, "Kill 'Em All" isn't aging all that well, no. But "Master of Puppets" still sounds pretty great.

I didn't think UNDISPUTED ATTITUDE was a cash-in at all. Slayer have always been into that stuff. Jeff Haneman had stickers of the DK's, the Pistols and D.R.I on his guitar from relatively way prior to that album. And some of their song choices were pretty esoteric, I thought. "Richard Hung Himself" by D.I. isn't exactly on every "Punk Rock" compilation, now is it!

I'll say Slayer, because I believe that Reign in Blood is the pinnacle of thrash, and they could've made a polka album next for all I care- they will always be great. And Sundar, I don't like Kill 'Em All that much either, but if you haven't them yet the next 3 are great great great.

Master of Puppets is kinda prog thrash. How about Victims of Deception by Heathen? That's kinda prog thrash. Were Watchtower thrash enough to be included? Probably not.

Siegbran mentions Impiety upthread. What's a good Impiety album? The metal show on our local college station played a great track by them the other night, can't remember what it was called or even really what it sounded like, just remember one really cool riff and me telling myself "remember Impiety."

Dark Angel's Time Does Not Heal to me is one of the epitomes of brutal thrash. Relentless from start to finish.

Also, Darkane seconded. Probably the best modern thrash around.

Skullfucking Armageddon is the Impiety album to get, the debut (from 96) isn't very good and the later ones are great but a lot more death metal.

While their discography is less extensive than a lot of the others, Death Angel have never put out a bad album, and most of their records are great or pretty damn close.

This is pretty old now, but I've really been digging the Hypnosia album Extreme Hatred originally released in 2000. I guess it's retro-thrash but it doesn't really sound like any other thrash I've heard. It's pretty fast but also kinda raw and crude with over-the-top evil vocals.

Disagree with your general statement but agree that Sepultura, Nervosa, and Krisiun all rule. Listening to the new Nervosa album right now and it kicks ass. I've been a fan all along, and even though they're down to one original member, she's clearly got a vision, because there have been no radical changes to their sound, which is good.
