I don't have much to work with at all, but I figure it's worth a shot...
Years ago - and the first time I ever downloaded MP3s - I took all of the free ones on Insound's website. Several of them didn't have any ID3 tagging on them, so I never really knew who the artists were. I burned them onto a CD, but eventually lost it.
There was one indie rock song - probably "emo" in the early-90s sense - that I have never figured out. It had inoffensively crunchy guitars and slightly high-picthed, breathless vocals a'la Knapsack (I remember thinking the singer sounded slightly like Mac from Superchunk as well), and at one point in a verse he sings what I thought was "...hang around at Goldfinch and Washington..."
Nothing comes up on any lyric searches; I can't find the song on Insound anymore; I don't know how else to try to figure this out. Ring any bells?

I also have an early aughts indie song I wish to track down. I remember nothing about the song whatsoever, but the video was great. It had a band doing a typical big gesture arena rock live performance, then cutting backstage to reveal that they're only miming along to what some rigid expressionless session musos are playing in some pokey dressing room/studio.
If it turns out that I've hallucinated the whole thing, I bags the concept for my band's first video.

For what it's worth, Goldfinch and Washington is an intersection in San Diego.
Maybe one of these bands?: Top 100 San Diego Bands of all time (a list thread: in no order)

I just got suddenly nostalgic for downloading mp3s from Insound and Epitonic ca. 1999-2000 -- like you, these were the first mp3s I'd ever heard.

Goldfinch and Washington is an intersection in San Diego.
Weirdly enough, that's the location of an indie record store now, but I don't think it was anything in the early aughts.

this sounds vaguely like "unreal is here" by chavez but i don't think it's the same one, as there's no "reveal" like you're talking about

It took me nearly 8 years, but today I discovered what song it was. I was digging around in a box in an old storage unit and happened to find an unmarked CD. I put it on, and it was the old .mp3 CD from 2000. I Shazamed the tune, and it turned out to be "Candy Takes the Cake" by The And/Ors, who were indeed a San Diego band that put out one LP in 2000 on Better Looking Records. Mystery solved; itch scratched!

I don't recall seeing such a happy ending to this sort of thread before. Cool.
