48. John Coltrate Live At Birdland

No, that's about the same for me as well, except I've heard Blonde on Blonde.

Also, I'm familiar with Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme, but I don't own either of them and so I don't think I've ever actually sat down and listened to them all the way through.

Bee OK, Friday, 24 October 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

waht?!

t**t, Friday, 24 October 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

Treblekicker you need to hear all 5!

There's never enough time to hear everything is there! I'll get round to it. BTW, you should hear the Goldberg Variations - and watch 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould, which tells you so much about why this guy is so special.

Plus, A Charlie Brown Christmas is one of the most classic Xmas albums of all time - albeit from not a very long list.

Treblekicker, Friday, 24 October 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

i've heard 14 albums off that list, and actively hate six of those. lists like these are totally gross, this one has more jazz and classical (uh goldberg variations twice though, wtf?) but other than that it's pretty much exactly the same as all boring canon lists ever...when i first got to university, i spent six months thinking i "should" hear these albums and wasted so much time on crap i didn't really enjoy. apart from the jazz, i have no plans to hear anything else on that list and will prob actively avoid them, actually.

lex pretend, Friday, 24 October 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

Abbey Road
Highway 61 Revisited
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Kind of Blue
A Love Supreme

Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

haha there is ONE woman represented in the entire top 100!!! and that's nico. at least most canon lists have the decency to have one or two token females. god how can anyone take this remotely seriously

lex pretend, Friday, 24 October 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

I was thinking the same thing, Lex. But then I started counting female bassists in indie bands like MBV and The Pixies and Sonic Youth and managed to get up to 5 women before I just gave up.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Friday, 24 October 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Thank you very much indeed, Lex (said in sincere Dale Winton voice).

Eric in the East Neuk of Anglia (Marcello Carlin), Friday, 24 October 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Don't forget Tina Weymouth.

President Keyes, Friday, 24 October 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

RYM is a very rigorous and fair collation of all the ratings of music collections of people who fucking bothered to enter them in one by one on the internet

goole, Friday, 24 October 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

oh i forgot kim gordon, didn't know about the others. does "plastic ono band" imply yoko ono's presence? anyway whatevz, 7 females, all part of male-dominated outfits. well done RYM!

we're talkin' top billing tho

Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

She was in the Velvet Underground who get top billing. It doesn't say Lou Reed and the rest of velvet underground and Nico

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 24 October 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

What more can I say, top billin'

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 24 October 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Whether there's 1 or 5 or 7, it's still fucking pathetic is what it is.

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Friday, 24 October 2008 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

i suppose you're a Donovan kinda guy. xp

ian, Friday, 24 October 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

nah i was brought up on dylan, just not those 2 albums

his very best stuff is awes (and he has, contrary to what many claim, a great voice) but i don't get the worship, even bearing the lyrics in mind

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 24 October 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

glenn gould - gbv
nas - illmatic
arvo part - tabula rasa
joy division - closer
coltrane live at birdland

69, Friday, 24 October 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

also i absolutely cannot abide by the hegemony the 60's holds over these lists

to further the point, dylan was a great painter of imagery for my young mind, but nowadays much of his music has lost some of its mystique and ethereal quality

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 24 October 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

Kind of surprising the number of people who haven't heard Illmatic.

President Keyes, Friday, 24 October 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I wasn't poking fun at the people who haven't heard odds ends of various classics, just the few who really will not listen no matter what. This poll is about albums heard, not owned. I'd think most of us here wouldn't relate to not even being curious. Thanks to public and school libraries, I heard a lot on that list by the time I was in high school.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 24 October 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

4, 7, 12, 14, 15. Don't think I've ever heard a Pink Floyd album actually. And I think I've only heard Abbey Road and Revolver once, but I guess that counts.

askance johnson, Friday, 24 October 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

WOW fuck Dylan.

have to say, I'm really surprised (and a little saddened) that someone with your yen for complexity and energy is 'lol jazz'...

m the g, Friday, 24 October 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

Xpost I'm just annoyed because he made this RYM search thread really boring for me.

What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Friday, 24 October 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

But those first couple jazz records are great.

What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Friday, 24 October 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

m the g, am lolling at the fact i haven't heard all these universally-revered jazz albums, am most certainly not hatin' on. i shd give them a go!

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 24 October 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

the lols were a reflection of how i couldn't escape the top 10, and the obvious reasons for this (i.e. gaps in my knowledge)

4 The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus
31 In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
36 Liquid Swords - GZA / Genius
45 Tabula Rasa - Arvo Pärt
50 Giant Steps - John Coltrane

Sir, are you calling 911 to complain about traffic? (G00blar), Friday, 24 October 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

i love how In The Court Of The Crimson King is way up there pretty much on the strength of one completely unbelievably awesome (and yeah jazz-stuffed) song

also i'd go into "jazz i like" but a) that'd derail the thread and b) i don't actually know where jazz stops and alt rock begins etc etc

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Friday, 24 October 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

i put nirvana in alt-rock

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 24 October 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, I've seen it before. Apparently there are a bit too many Norwegians who are into "talk singing" and a "dirty production" with lots of dirty guitar. But it's pretty much the usual "canon". :)

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 25 October 2008 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

Some people here obviously have a lot of mandatory listening to do :)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 25 October 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Don't care so much for Dylan or the Beatles, and know their stuff only as odds and ends of tracks, So, on the basis that if I don't remember hearing an album, I haven't really listened to it, the Banana album is the only one I've heard in the top five. It's going to be a long time, if not a cold day in hell, before I actually want to hear that one again.

Chinese chart is interesting - note the presence of the GO4's Entertainment!

3, 4, 9, 10, 13 -- 4 of these are Dylan, the other is Mingus.

I've never even heard a Dylan song, let alone an entire album. Don't much care for Mingus, although I'll probably get around to hearing that album at some point.
