Help me to understand the meaning of the clip to Beyonce's 'If I Were A Boy'

It's either a complex, multilayered narrative in which lyrical themes are played off against visual themes, or I'm very stupid. Because I spent the whole clip trying to decide if she was a girl being treated as a boy, or vice versa, or something else. And then there's the little dialogue interludes which make the whole deal even less penetrable. Please tell me what's going on with reference to specific episodes, if possible relating these to the lyrics. Thank you ta.
