I don't think Steely Dan sucks, but I don't like 'em one bit. I keep trying, becuz music snobs whose tastes I respect and overlap with keep extolling their virtues, but it's an aesthetic I just can't get behind.

So I guess I suck.

staggerlee, Saturday, 25 October 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

this thread isn't really about Steely Dan, dude. it's about some guy wanting to advertise the fact that he's a dick.

I see what you both mean, but it is really just an impression. Steely Dan sold over 30 million records.

Sure, we all know the record buying demographic in the last 35 years is exclusively made of 30 year olds... I mean, young people never had any impact whatsoever in overall album sales, right? Actually only grannies and pensioners have bought Steely Dan albums over the last 30+ years.

Vision, Saturday, 25 October 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

this thread isn't really about Steely Dan, dude. it's about some guy wanting to advertise the fact that he's a dick

not quite, though I can't really blame anyone for thinking this.

me being heart-broken when SD won against Fleetwood Mac + me flying into a rage at apparent SD landslide win against MBV = this thread.

music is a way of life. it's a way of life. (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 25 October 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

Who cares about the demographic?, or who bought the records in 1975/2007?... It's good music.

Maybe good vintage music=good vintage cheese...you only understand how good it is after you've been bombarded with the processed variety for a long time.

plus sarcasm takes time to develop.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Steely Dan is the sound of being sexually molested by a mustachioed man in a trailer

Pantheism F. Mohair (res), Thursday, 6 November 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, but he's molesting you ironically, so that makes it real cool.

Zeno, ILX is, more or less, a board full of people who pay attention to music criticism, or are writers themselves. Steely Dan's Pazz & Jop track record: second place in 1974, sixth place in 1975 and 1976, fifth place in 1977, twelfth place in 1980. They've always, always been a critics' band. This is nothing new.

lmao. donald fagen and steve albini don't strike me as that far apart, tempermentally speaking? idk. i mean they're probably both chauvinists haha. maybe a narcissism of small differences dad/son thing going on. forgive my impishness.

albini is allergic to studio slickness, which probably prevents him from digging deeper to find the sardonicism

In one of his podcast interviews for the In Utero box set, he mentioned watching a lot of episodic shows, though some of it may be stuff he just watches with his wife (i.e. it's something she wants to follow). I can't remember the shows though...maybe Peaky Blinders? I just remember it was stuff I knew of but hadn't seen.

Steely Dan spent millions to sound like the SNL band, Hall & Oates WERE the SNL band, guess we know on which side of the equation Steve falls

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 09:34 (two years ago)

there are some hilarious tweets in there

There's some video where they talk about every song on an album, and each one begins with the not-bald one saying, "this song is based on my deep love of the blues, just a very bluesy blues. Deep blues." Then lays his jazz dork hands on the fucking electric piano...

the not-bald one...! haha

Two types of perfectionist: One will prepare, revise and rehearse carefully, with intent, honing an idea to a keen edge, ready to cut the cloth of execution. The other makes other people responsible by saying, "do it again," until by chance they are satisfied, then take credit.

Hard to pick a favorite from all the injured itt, top marks for the chord counters though, never would have believed you existed.
