My brother (jonathan thrak) and I would seem to be the only prog fans on this site; are there any more? Come to that, are there any teenage prog fans left?

Anna Rose, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You'll come to find that everyone here is a big fan of Tarkus.

Andy K, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, they are all IDM snobs now trying to outwit each other in various hacked software.

earlnash, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds like a terrific/quite appalling idea for a reality TV gameshow

N., Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Anna, there are a few prog fans at ILM -- I don't know how many are in their teens. You should talk to ethan, because he was making noise about getting into Yes a few weeks back.

dleone, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now that I think about it, some of the people probably like prog, but they won't admit to it, as they just call it "postrock". :)

earlnash, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Norman Phay is a respected prog fan on ILx, despite using Haxor speak. Just dont mention Prml Scrm to him.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was a teenage prog fan, now I'm a 23-year-old prog fan.

Damian, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am only a teen by virtue of my own complicated mathematical beliefs, but i am not anti-prog at all (also, rap = prog haha)

mark s, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure I'd color myself a fan of ALL things prog, but I'm certainly guilty of owning albums by Yes, Geneis, King Crimson, Marillion (well, one album by Marillion) and.....er....Cardiacs, if that counts, not to mention some Rush and Pink Floyd, if you count them as prog. I've heard people call Queen prog, but I can't quite reconcile that entirely.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pink floyd = punk, alex

mark s, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Pink Floyd

Kris, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a King Crimson album!!! Um ah that's it. My housemate is much nearer being teenage than I am and loves Yes. My other housemate came in last week when I was playing Steely Dan and said "Is this prog?". When I was 13-14 I was well into Pink Floyd but then I turned to the dark side.

Tom, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does the fact that I've watched Live at Pompeii at least 12 times qualify me as a prog fan? If that doesn't do the trick, I used to have the limited edition version of Brain Salad Surgery on CD that had the foldout sleeve.

Andy K, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brain Salad Surgery = Frankenchrist

mark s, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dave q!! sundar!! omar!! You like totally joined the heavy-hitters' team, anna!!

mark s, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you mean this isn't a thread about allanah myles? you people disappoint me.

Queen G (no relation to Brad), Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm working class, I'm not allowed to listen to prog.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm working class, I'm not allowed to listen to prog.

Actually, I think you're only allowed to listen to Henry Cow.

dleone, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

irony here being much prog was w/class, and punk (in capitol) m/class,

gareth, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nope, that's us.

The Only Ones, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't call myself a prog fan. I used to listen to and like a lot of it in my teens and early 20's. But I still like some of it, sometimes more obscure patches of it. For instance, I'd really like to get my hands on a certain album by the Italian band Sensations Fix. If Mars Everywhere's "Industrial Sabotage" were issued on CD, I would buy it. I'd like to buy some more Ashra Temple, if that counts. I guess I tend to like things with a pseudo-Frippish guitar sound and no vocals. I do also like some King Crimson and Yes, but don't play them much.

I think I might do a thread about why fans of prog. should like certain forms of Arabic popular music.

DeRayMi, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like some prog - Hawkwind, earlyish Pink Floyd, some Genesis.

DV, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heart Yes (and most P.Floyd). Apparently that also makes me a prog fan. But I can't think of any other prog act I really like. Anyway Yes = pop (and, as mark s rightly says, hip hop = prog, especially these days... AntiPopCon, Cann Ox et cet.)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like early Genesis. Most other prog is off-limits, parents were fans.

tyler, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Pink Floyd, Hawkwind and Funkadelic.

What?

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Were Uriah Heep prog? I like them. And Hawkwind, of course. I used to like Yes, but Jon Anderson's voice started to bug me when I was about 15 or so.

Everybody loves Roger Dean, though, Anna!

Arthur, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A prog fan! and a female one at that, sorry, but it sounds like a rarity to me. I was a huge fan of King Crimson a short while back, although I have a limited range of their back catalogue. I remember thinking "In The Wake Of Poseidon" was one of the best songs I'd ever heard. They are a wonderful band and fuck it if they're unfashionable/geeky/whatever. Good ideas for most of their 70s career but went a bit dodgy in the early 80s (when belew joined as singer). That said, the album they released circa 95 (forget the title now for some reason) is very endearing, if sounding a bit simply red-ish at times (eg walking on air).
Choice cuts:
Ladies of the Road
Epitaph
Dinosaur
Bolero
Cat Food
The Nightwatch
Book of Saturdays

Sob! Wish I'd brought my albums with me! But I haven't.

dog latin, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(i have to say i think "ladies of the road" is the ugliest song evah written by anyone)

mark s, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was a huge prog fan in my teens and then I pretty much moved on to jazz and hip-hop and all that. I still like King Crimson quite a bit, especially the 70s and (to a lesser extent) the 80s and Thrak most of all, as well as some of the side projects.

Jordan, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like prog if it's krautrock.

A Nairn, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My master Yanni vill crush yew all!!!!

Joe, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heart prog as well, and I agree that Funkadelic (and Parliament for that matter) qualify. Not so sure about hip hop = prog, but there is evidence to support that view (Gentle Giant and Billy Cobham being sampled, Mixmaster Mike cutting 'Tom Sawyer', etc.). Anyway, here comes a bit of an essay.

I became a proggie at the tender age of six when a babysitter's boyfriend brought Rush's 'All The World's A Stage' over to our place and played it on our funny 70s stereo (the big, wood, one-piece unit with the turntable, tuner, and 8-track all in one with the storage bin on the side for LPs which was my mom's favourite place to hide Easter candy). Then came a gap caused by punk (they set cans of gasoline on fire in the streets! I though I was going to die!) and disco (I came second in a disco dancing contest on my eighth birthday. My mom thought it would be fair to award the prize to one of my guests, though I was clearly the victor). Then later (in grade 5 as we say here in Canada) I had Rush's 'Moving Pictures', which was only marginally prog, but good anyway. Then came late night radio, and the DJ's need to take a leak, which introduced me to...Yes! 'Close To The Edge' was a smoke, pee, and sandwich break for many a late night DJ, I'm guessing, and I loved it, and still do (CTTE, that is!). I had to own all their albums, at least up until 'Going For The One', which having the Hipgnosis cover as opposed to the Roger Dean cover didn't turn my 14 year old crank, which is too bad since 'Awaken' is perhaps their strongest composition. I can still remember the look on the face of the guy at Froggie's (correct me if that wasn't the name, Sean) when I ordered 'Relayer' on vinyl. Later on I got into Pre-Abacab Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, a little ELP (though I thought Greg Lake was a HUGE wanker because of his claim that he was the driving force behind King Crimson Mark I), Kate Bush (almost totally prog in my mind), all the jazz fusion stuff that's heavy on the prog tip (Mahavishnu, Brand X, Billy Cobham, etc.), but I always go back to Yes. The first crack in the wall came when I was 19 when I played side 1 of 'The Yes Album' for the girl I was with at the time, when she exclaimed, "This sounds like music to smoke drugs to!" I had never smoked anything in my life up to that point and was very confused, and I'm not sure if I ever got over it. I now often associate the music I love(d) with slothful, hippie stoners. So I got into metal. These days it seems all the teenage prog fans are stoners, which is cool, I guess. Better than being homicidal maniacs. If you, Anna Rose are not a stoner, that's cool too. Don't limit yourself, though, in spite of prog's allure(!). FUCK! Bye for now.

Bryan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just noticed that my main prog influence is LONG-WINDEDNESS! Sorry about that.

Bryan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to mention incoherance.

Bryan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And the need to produce works in multiple parts when one may have been fine.

Bryan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That bit about not limiting yourself didn't come out right! I wasn't suggesting you take up tokin' as a way of expanding your horizons! I meant fo r you not to limit yourself to prog, as if anyone who lurks around these pages would limit themselves! Sorry for the confusion. I'll never make another post, unless I have to.

Bryan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian your post is awesome (and touching)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, eh.

Anyway, sorry Anna Rose. I just read some of your 'Introduce Yourself' posts. Kenya, huh? Wow. Gong, huh? Double-wow. I like them, too. You should try to find some Soft Machine, especially the first four or five albums, which I think you'll enjoy as well. They were buddies with the Floyd from their early days, and founding member Daevid Allen founded Gong. I hope the writing is going well, and that it's not too hot there.

Bryan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bryan, did you just entice a 13 year old to smoke pot? Ts ts ts.
"MOMMY THE INTERNET WARPED MY MIND!"

cuba libre (nathalie), Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Almost. When I was 13 some friends of mine wanted me to smoke some hash with them. I cried and ran home. Now it should be clear as to why I apologized so many times after that post. I am a big crybaby. I wonder what they would do to a 13 year old person in Kenya if they were caught smoking weed. I shouldn't wonder things like that at 3 AM.

Bryan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolutely bugger all. A kid in my class (actually 15) smokes weed 24 7. If he was caught, hey it wouldn't matter cos the police are so venal. But I don't smoke weed. I just listen to Gong - comes to the same thing I guess you could say...:)

Anna Rose, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it was Froggies (nee Nu-Flipside), but I thought it was run by someone named Dianne....don't remember a guy there. I do remember buying a vinyl copy of Einsturzende Neubauten's Halber Mensch there, but that's not really prog so I'll let it drop.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(i have to say i think "ladies of the road" is the ugliest song evah written by anyone)
See, this is why I heart mark s.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ladies of the Road" is quite ugly lyrically, though the music (particularly the chorus) sounds to me like a Lennon-penned number circa '68-'69.

Joe, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a great song - my first really weird KC song (before it all I knew were 'I talk to the wind', 'In the court', and 'The Night Watch' - all of which are much easier to like first try.)

Anna Rose, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Prog and proud, eh? Nice to see so many people sticking their heads out of the trenches here... I think a shameless plug for The Organ fanzine is in order here, as we've been covering progness (amongst other more acceptable things) since we started in 1986. Come on over and subscribe if you're really into this stuff. We've uncovered a couple of very good UK bands this issue ( Qadesh and Litmus). The really good stuff is being done on the experimental/metal/postrock/emocore fringes - Dillinger Escape Plan, 90 Day Men, Sikth, Red AnimalWar, Lapsus Linguae and Sleepytime Gorilla MuseumSleepytime Gorilla Museum.

marinecreature, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am also a part-time prog fan (44 yrs old), Yes being my fave band when I was a teenager. I loved them through Relayer, then hated everything thereafter when they went pop and I went punk. I do still like Eno, Gabriel-era Genesis, King Crimson, and especially Gong, who I re-discovered a few years ago. I am on the lookout for Gong-like bands but haven't found one yet. Ozric Tentacles have the instrumentation and chops, but their songs just don't grab me.
