Will someone who knows Material or Bill Laswell or Afrika Bambaataa please tell me they know this B-Side record "Cairo Nights"?

Real good album. "Bones" is one of my least favorite songs on it, though. Favorites are "Change The Beat" (a single at the time I believe), "What I Like (American Dreams)" (another single), and "A Lot To Give."

Change the Beat features B-Side but is credited to Fab Five Freddie. I love that whole period, Laswell produced a bunch of similar hip-hop 12"s, all with similar Futura artwork on the back, I think. Change The Beat, The Wildstyle by Time Zone and Phase II's The Roxy. There was a B-Side single from that period called Odeon I think, with Bernard Folwer and Bambaata and all these folks. The Cairo Nights stuff came a bit later.

If you want Cairo Nights, let me know. I've got a good-sounding rip of it. The Celluloid comp cd has a longer and a shorter version of "Change the Beat" than the one on Cairo Nights. The shorter one goes all French "rap" in sort of a Blondie/ZE fusion.

Though now that I look, you seem to be able to get it (I mean, illegally download it) here:

LOL me and my drunk ass. It's not exactly obvious on that page, though. Thanks.

Yeah, these were so cool. I still have the Grandmixer D.St. "Grandmixer Cuts It Up" one (on Celluloid, 1982); used to have a couple others, but they've been gone for years, stupidly. They were actually kind of confusing -- because, right, the main (French) rapping on the Fab Five Freddy one was the B-side girl addressing Freddy rather than Freddy himself; and I'm not even sure if Futura 2000 actually rapped on his. What were there, like, four or five of them? I don't think I ever even had the "Wildstyle" one, though.

Wow Bimble thanx 4 this thread. I had no clue she had an entire album out (or that the likes of "Change the Beat" or "What I Like" appeared on an album).

Glad you appreciate it, KJB. I would be curious to know how you even knew of her to begin with. Also, if anyone wants to point me to a comprehensive list of those 12"es, I'd appreciate it. Surely some of it has to be on 5l5k or wherever. I found a Bill Laswell discog online...was he involved in all of these things?

I sent an email to a BIll Laswell mailing list trying to get in touch with him in the hopes of compiling them all. There has been a bunch of CD and vinyl pressings compiling much of this stuff though.

yeah - i have that micronauts mix and was checking it earlier to see if b-side was featured on it (she aint)
its great other than in the middle they have dropped a sample section (track 7 - konk)
ie. 4 minutes of singled out noises/loops and suchlike.
great for mixes i'm sure, but put the thing at the end of the tracklising not in the middle as it totally spoils the flow.

I regret that this album didn't sound nearly as good to me in my teenage years as it does now.

one month passes...

WOAH! This song by Time Zone called "Wildstyle"!!! I think this is the original mix. It's 8:19. Anyway this is a freaking amazing record. Holy shit. She sings on it, too, sometimes.
