Musically, it's Peter Gabriel all the way here. And he did a pretty respectable fight against apartheid too, plus he has used third world music in a constructive way to improve his own music. So my vote goes there. :)

Damon Albarn has mainly done music with people with a non Western background, hasn't he? I mean, I didn't include Paul Simon or David Byrne either.

PG: "Games without Frontiers" was a laff, and it was years until I found that the high pitched "Jeuxxx! sans FrONtiers.." wasn't sung by him but Kate Bush.
Sting: The first two Police albums were OK.

early police were an awesome singles band, but apart from that sting is dire, obvs.

Late Police were an awesome albums band. And even the three first Sting solo albums were indeed quite good.
