MTV smacks YouTube, posts almost every music video ever
― Brad C., Wednesday, 29 October 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)
I love that they had to repeat "music" in the URL (http://www.mtvmusic.com/) in case you didn't realize what the M in "MTV" stood for.

― William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 12:58 (seventeen years ago)
10/10 for "Money For Nothing" being the most watched video on the site.
― Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)
I'm thinking Slowdive's 'Catch the Breeze'
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)
5 years late but OK
how does copyright affect the distribution of FREE content online in this case? seems so draconian
― Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:05 (seventeen years ago)
Top rated video for this week, of course:
Never Gonna Give You UpRick Astley
― Brad C., Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)
First look: no Pretenders, no Art of Noise (was looking for "Close to the Edit"), no Grace Jones (was looking for "Slave to the Rhythm").
― Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:14 (seventeen years ago)
No Chilliwack "My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)," no credibility.
― Sara Sara Sara, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)
no Art of Noise (was looking for "Close to the Edit"), no Grace Jones (was looking for "Slave to the Rhythm").

― titchyschneiderMk2, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)
It looks to me like there's a lot of Pretenders material there ...
― Brad C., Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:32 (seventeen years ago)
does it compile playlists for you based on selection of search terms/categories? that is key
― Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)
or not even playlists as such, just automatically playing videos indefinitely based on chosen criteria
― Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)
Ah, I missed the Pretenders on the first look. Thanks.
― Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)
This is so very cool.
― Cunga, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

― anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 14:36 (seventeen years ago)
we need an MTV Europe version anyway to include all the edits they did for Party Zone, Megamix etc.
― Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)
server must be getting horribly smacked because almost everything I do give me an error
― akm, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
Me too, except for one vid that just wouldn't play. Maybe it's not mac compatible.
― chap, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)
I call bullshit -
From the Wikipedia entry for the Minutemen's song 'This Ain't no Picnic':
"The video earned some airplay on MTV and was also featured on their first-ever MTV Video Music Awards show in 1985."
It is 'no picnic' that I am not finding 'This Ain't No Picnic' - this is not their 'whole library' ...
― BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)
They're up to 16,000 videos, which is a lot, though it's not "almost every music video ever" and probably not even as many as are on YouTube right now. But it's a work in progress, and I'm glad they've made it available. Not too hard to find good stuff on there; here's Marcus Roberts' "The Governor" for instance: http://www.mtvmusic.com/video/?id=55021.
― dad a, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)
Great news!
Finally, one of the best videos of the 80s is available:http://www.mtvmusic.com/video/?id=58753
― Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)
Looked up about 20 videos seen on MTV and exactly two were there. Probably 20/20 on YouTube.
― Andy K, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)
duzz even ave the fookin Beatles
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)
Youtube is probably still better for recent mainstream stuff, but the MTV database has potential for more obscure 80s material. Also found "Dreamtime" by Daryl Hall there, and I haven't seen that video in about 20 years. No "All I Want" by Howard Jones though, so it isn't like everything is in there.
― Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)
Wow to that Marcus Roberts clip. Thanks, dad a! Love love love the album; never knew there was a video!

How in the hell is "Heroes" #6 overall, viewed almost 8000 times.
― cee-oh-tee-tee, Thursday, 30 October 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)
Jeez, way too many gaps. Searched for 25 videos, found one.
― Formerly Painful Dentistry, Thursday, 30 October 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)
Yes it's been a whole 48 hours, hasn't it. Fucking useless bastards, let's kill them.
― cee-oh-tee-tee, Thursday, 30 October 2008 01:47 (seventeen years ago)
Hey, I'm just sayin'. I mean, if they were modest about what they were posting I wouldn't be all up in their grill.
― Formerly Painful Dentistry, Thursday, 30 October 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)
Previously, when I tried to watch Prince videos on the MTV site, I got the "sorry, due to copyright issues you can't watch this video in your country" message, but now they seem to be available in Finland. As well as all the other videos on the site, yay! Is it only the UK folks who still get this copyright thing?

Dude. It is all about "Bop Til You Drop" by Rick Springfield.
http://www.mtvmusic.com/video/?id=55089
This was like the science fiction follow-up to Thriller in which Rick Springfield frees a bunch of slaves in a dystopian future and rallies them together to defeat an evil laser shooting lizard/alien. I can't believe this video doesn't get more love.
