Let's talk about track # 3 on the Cure's Disintegration LP (1989).

the pinefox, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

... like - how does it relate to... track 2... and track 4??

the pinefox, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Continues the theme of the album as established with the first two songs -- similar start, etc. -- while setting up the contrast that "Lovesong" will then provide.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey - I agree!

the pinefox, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned and Pinefox share the same mind SHOCKAH.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

History is being made here. Someone somewhere should crack open a bottle of champagne to mark this event.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell, I'm already drunk! (by the way, the track is grate, which you'd expect from an album which is, obv., GRATE)

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i could talk about track 9 until i draw my last breath. still my very favourite track off that album, by that band, and of that year. haven't listened to 'disintegration' for a good few years, but boy what a song 'same deep water as you' is/was/ever shall be. thought 'bloodflowers' was lousy, 'wild mood swings' too. best album still a toss-up betwixt 'kiss me' and 'wish'. i'm taking it we're all agreed on these issues, or is criticising the late period (post wish) can of worms time ?

*god* but they were good 87-92.

Ah, "Closedown". This is one of the few Cure songs I actively dislike. After the heady, swirly bombast of "Plainsong" and the bittersweet pop jangle of "Pictures Of You", we are presented with a lukewarm, unfinished mess that features some of the most criminal drumming to ever appear on a Cure track, an overly bombastic synth riff that drowns the unusually muddled bass and guitar interplay, topped off with Robert dutifully trotting out all the cliches people associate with doom 'n gloom Cure and reeling them off like he was reading out numbers at a Bingo hall. This goes on for something like six minutes. Absolutely unforgivable, especially considering that every other song on the album is excellent.

There isn't a single song on _Bloodflowers_ that doesn't piss all over "Closedown" when compared by lyrics, song construction, production/musical arrangement, or emotional investment (percieved by the listener or experienced by the listener). "Closedown" is vapid, weak, unaffecting, and really disappointing and I rank it in badness with songs like "Push", "Mint Car", "A Thousand Hours" and "Return".

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But how do you FEEL, Dan?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The song provided the name for an okay enough early American shoegaze group = it wins. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually Nizad (heh heh), I did forget to add that I don't see how it sets up "Lovesong" beyond making the listener gag for something that sounds like some thought was put into putting it together. Other than that, I think my post speaks for itself. :)

Having said all that, there's a considerable gulf of badness between "Closedown" and "Return". That song is diabolically poor, doubly so because it TRIES SO HARD and misses just about every mark you can think of.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like 'Closedown'. It's that time of year when I remind myself how much I love Disintegration, and how much I like the Cure in general, whatever their reputation these days.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Cure is one of my favorite bands, and _Disintegration_ is a fantastic album. It's just that I can't get behind that song.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like people who don't care about reputation, fashion and hype. Me too I still love the Cure. Especially the early Cure (weren't they called Easy Cure in the beginning, but that's another thread) of "17 seconds" and "The Forest". Though I am still hooked to the "An Ideal for Living" EP by Joy Division (see other thread) right now. I Will listen to "Closedown" tonight. And if Dan does not like "Closedown" (sorry I don't remember the tune) there is a good chance I will like it.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A couple of things:

"That song" refers to "Return", in case it wasn't clear from context. That song is, without doubt, the worst thing that The Cure has ever recorded.

And if Dan does not like "Closedown" (sorry I don't remember the tune) there is a good chance I will like it.

??? How do you figure that? (Translation: What record have I been babbling about that you can't stand?)

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To Dan: "The Top". And I just listened to "Closedown" and I like the drumming very much. I also like that Robert Smith does not sing so much, an overdose of his voice sometimes kills me. And the lyrics are premier cru. Especially the beginning and the end. They condense The Cure and their music in two sentences: "i'm running out of time...if only i could fill my heart with love". That's universal. And that's why I like The Cure.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The drumming actually gives the song a structure most Cure songs don't have. It gives the song a backbone. It makes it more physical. And the melody of the synthesizer and the keyboard variations are wonderfully melancholic in a very calm and peaceful way. A nice song to fall asleep to.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I say keyboard? Sorry I meant the guitar.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Closedown: the reappraisal begins!

the pinefox, Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't like the drumming, but the Trilogy version made me smile.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

closedown: the Entreat version is Classic. i will have the "trilogy" dvd tonight, so this is exciting.
disntgrtn show was something else. a rainy gray september massachusetts day. closedown was one of those songs that was over way too fast. but its one of the numbers where robert had(s) a few minutes to shake hands and swoon until the vocals kick in.

"prayers for rain" was the one that took me a few years to really enjoy.

kephm, Thursday, 26 June 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, I think "Prayers For Rain" is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
