Bubblegum covers

A recent bubblegum thread mentioned Wilson Picket's "Sugar Sugar," which brought to mind the wonderful bit of sickness that is Julie London doing "Yummy Yummy Yummy." Talking Heads did "1-2-3 Red Light" live, REM supposedly did the Banana Splits' "I Enjoy Being a Boy (In Love With You)." (This is the best bubblegum song in the universe, incidently.)

There's something kinda perverse in covering a fictional band, no? Any other notable

I can't accept the term 'fictional band'. If they are called a band, they are a band. Spinal Tap was a band in the same way Steely Dan was a band. Also, the Banana Splits had some great songs.

the pooh sticks covered many a bubblegum hit. of course, they were a "fictional band" themselves...

The recent book "Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth" is a very entertaining read. Highly recommended.

The Ramones covered a couple of bubblegum songs, including (I think, I could be wrong) "Ten Little Indians" by the Ohio Express.

Baccara also did a version of 'Yummy,Yummy,Yummy'which I actually like more than the original, very camp,HUGE production number. There's also Jonathan King's version of Sugar Sugar which is a bit of a laugh.Bubblegum Forever.

as did Rita Chao & The Quests, an outstanding punk band from Singapore, ca. 1966.

I first encountered Rita's voice in the Valencia Street watering hole The Casanova Lounge. Despite the hideous name, the jukebox is always top-notch. I was so blown away by Rita's version of Tommy James & The Shondell's "Hanky Panky" that I politely excused myself from my table and sidled up to the jukebox to find out who on earth was delivering such a raucous take on the old barband favorite. The answer was contained within: Girls In The Garage, Vol. 9: Oriental Special on Romulan Records.

Other Rita Chao songs featured on this CD are the very excellent (with 3rd verse modulation) "Yummy Yummy Yummy" sung in Mandarin Chinese as well as "How To Catch A Girl"--an excellent take on Sam Sham + The Pharoahs' "How Do You Catch A Girl?"

In various Chinatown thriftstores I have stumbled across many Rita Chao LPs, 10"s and 45s, along with Nancy Sit, another golden-voiced 60s garage-diva from the enchanted city-state. My personal favorites are Rita Chao With The Quests LP as well as the "Wooly Bully" b/w "Pretty Flamingo" EP. But the above Girls In The Garage comp is pretty amazing as well.

Rita (and Nancy) are also accomplished actresses, many hong-kong friendly video stores may be able to help you track down their films.

. . . isn't there some sort of "twisted bubblegum" movement (the Weevils?) in San Francisco at the moment?

The Queers did I Enjoy Being A Boy and also the Beach Boys' Hawaii. I have a bootleg where Paul Westerberg does a nice version of Daydream Believer.
