Stick 'em up punk, it's... Jarvis Cocker's bare butt.

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 30 October 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

Pulp of course.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

um?

Kevin Keller, Friday, 31 October 2008 05:15 (seventeen years ago)

Is Pulp nowadays a 'guilty pleasure'? Has a band/person fallen so far off the critical ladder without contributing to the 'reduction' (much)?

Still, way to pick a poll they 'should' win...

Mark G, Friday, 31 October 2008 07:25 (seventeen years ago)

i don't want this to look like Brit snobbishness, because it's unfair to pit a one-trick US joke band against probably the wittiest, original and charming british band of the 90s. i've nothing against the crims at all. it's just not a fair contest.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Friday, 31 October 2008 11:36 (seventeen years ago)

I'd much rather listen to FLC than Pulp. But that's because I'd much rather listen to the sound of my own entrails being roasted on a spit than listen to Pulp, really.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Friday, 31 October 2008 11:41 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not gonna vote, in the hope that FLC might win and we will thus have a valid excuse to purge ILM

restraint and blindness (Just got offed), Friday, 31 October 2008 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

take yr "purges" to TMI board, pls.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Friday, 31 October 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

Dr X O'Skeleton, Friday, 31 October 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

There has never been a worse band in the history of music than the Fun Lovin' Criminals so Pulp kind of win by default really.

Fun Loving Criminals are a 'novelty' group.

Pulp are 'clever' band.

I like them both, but there's a big difference.

Pulp. By the biggest distance of any ILM poll ever.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

xpost damnit Whiney

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

anyway I own about 15 Pulp CDs and simply have that one FLC song on a freebie compilation I got when I ordered a pizza.

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

hey, man, they had two songs.

Whiney G. Torture Garden (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 31 October 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

"The Fun Lovin' Criminal" is a better song than "Common People", but I think Pulp might just edge it overall.

Freedom, Friday, 31 October 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

if pulp loses, can we ban polls?

i mean i know people like to vote contrarily just to be, well, contrary. but this is getting ridiculous.

Kevin Keller, Friday, 31 October 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

relax kevin, let things happen as they will, the last laugh shall be ours

restraint and blindness (Just got offed), Friday, 31 October 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

If Pulp loses, all threads will have to be polls.

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 31 October 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, I voted for FLC.

Not because they're better than Pulp, but because I like them better than Pulp.

Whiney G. Torture Garden (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 31 October 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think either band is good but i definitely prefer FLC. plus FLC don't come w/sycophant fans trying to claim that pulp are the most important and most intelligent band in british music ever

lex pretend, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

setting up arguments against bands by strawmanning an exaggerated interpretation of things about 0.5% of their fans might have said in a moment of excitement is one of the most odious aspects of the popist war on sophistication

restraint and blindness (Just got offed), Friday, 31 October 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

also we are considering berghain within the next few days, hold that thought there why dontcha

restraint and blindness (Just got offed), Friday, 31 October 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

um, the best Pulp songs are the ones where they let go of "sophistication" and just jam out ("Common People" and "This Is Harcore" being my two main examples; when I think sophisticated Pulp, I think "Dishes" which immediately makes me want to stab).

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 31 October 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

I had a lot of trouble with the final word of that post; it had been "creativity", "indie", "guitar music", but in the end I plumped for a word that sums up music that does not head instinctively for the pop heart but plays with musical and emotional levels. Even those two songs you mention certainly do this; neither is straightforward, and both (especially This Is Hardcore) are revered for their progression, their emotional journey as much as their sparkle. TIH is extremely sophisticated!

restraint and blindness (Just got offed), Friday, 31 October 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

you're such an elitist! ;)

Kevin Keller, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

i don't even get het up by arcade fire fans these days, tolerance for all predilections

restraint and blindness (Just got offed), Friday, 31 October 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

the popist war on sophistication

Now, there's a book title for you. To be written by the Al Gore of music journalism, whoever that may be.

the audacity of poll

darraghmac, Friday, 7 November 2008 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

Damnit. When I started this poll, I thought the inhabitants of ILM could find it within themselves to embrace change and hope, but the results show they've fallen back on the old provincial fears and prejudices.

Freedom, Friday, 7 November 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

hope is a good thing, but pulp is a better thing
