I did this exact same thread like five years ago, but that was before polls existed. Vote wisely.

Stop it. Just stop it.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, what?

jaymc, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, you know what? This one is easy, since it's just comparing songs.

Roadrunner is out of the running immediately. Sister Ray is great, but by no means even my fave Velvets song. Which really has it down between NEU! and Stereolab.

And as much as I freaking love NEU! and realise that the Stereolab track is a total cop of Hallogallo - I do actually prefer Jenny Ondioline because the only way that Hallogallo could POSSIBLY be any better would be if they stuck some icy cool female harmony vocals over the top and lo and behold... JENNY ONDIOLINE is the winner.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

Hallogallo >>> Roadrunner > Sister Ray >>>>> Jenny Ondioline.

All are great.

Alex in SF, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

This should make a hell of a mix together!

Mark G, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

Went for Roadrunner. I don't care if I never hear Sister ray again in my life...I've heard that way too many times. Jenny Ondioline is good too, though.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

But Jenny Ondioline also has that mad spoken word "the signal is recorded equally on both channels... ...but are OUT of phase..." bit before the NOISE BREAKDOWN.

Which is possibly one of my favourite moments in music, well, EVER.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

All great. But some are greater than others.

D'you mean "best song"? Or best motorik?

Owen Pallett, Friday, 31 October 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

Interpret it however you like, but I was thinking best song.

jaymc, Friday, 31 October 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

intrigued that deej put velvet undergound as no. 1.

i think i want neu as the best but this is so fucking hard

t_g, Saturday, 1 November 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

Neu!

i've been voting Neu! a lot in polls lately, and with good cause

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 1 November 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

"Roadrunner" is not at all good, but at least it is music.

I haven't heard the Stereolab one, I believe. And the others are not.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 1 November 2008 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

jenny ondioline any day of the week

I have never understood "Roadrunner," the appeal thereof, though I do not dislike it much.

rubisco (Abbott), Saturday, 1 November 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

Jenny Ondioline > Sister Ray >> Hallogallo >>>>>>>>> Roadrunner

That having been said I listen to Sister Ray the least out of the four.

Roadrunner > Jenny Ondioline >> Hallogallo >> Sister Ray

It may be heresy but if Sister Ray was only 5 minutes instead of 5 hours then I would like to hear it more than once every 5 years.

that's not my post, Saturday, 1 November 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

oh man, this is terrible.
i mean, hallogallo is kind of the backbone of modern rock music.
but im voting with my heart, and roadrunner it is

I have never understood "Roadrunner," the appeal thereof, though I do not dislike it much.

― rubisco (Abbott), Saturday, November 1, 2008 12:55 AM (4 hours ago)

this is not meant to be snide, but um, do you like punk music?

Kevin Keller, Saturday, 1 November 2008 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

or rock'n'roll?

J.D., Saturday, 1 November 2008 07:12 (seventeen years ago)

Personally, no, I don't like punk music. I like dronerock. Which is why I didn't vote for Roadrunner either. It's a cute enough shout-out punk song, but it's totally outclassed and out of its league in this company.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 1 November 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

Don't know what "Sister Ray" is doing here, what's it got to do with motorik? The "Live 1969" version of "What Goes On" on the other hand...

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Saturday, 1 November 2008 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

sister ray begat roadrunner which (???begat???) hallogallo which begat jenny ondioline

i've recently come into a new appreciation of sister ray...i think i'll vote for it.

goofus vs. gallant (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 1 November 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know what that stereolab one is, but then I don't really like stereolab.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 1 November 2008 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think there's the slightest begat between Roadrunner and Hallogallo. It's more like an evolutionary dead end. It's totally the odd one out in the otherwise selection of greatness.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 1 November 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

hallogallo

human cactus (latebloomer), Saturday, 1 November 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

Sister Ray & Roadrunner are related. Hallogallo and that other thing are related. However Pair 1 has nothing to woth Pair 2 and vice versa.

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Saturday, 1 November 2008 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

um, the original thread made it sound like all of them have the same groove...liek one two three four five six SEVEN EIGHT or something like that

goofus vs. gallant (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 1 November 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

a poll where the options aren't even related, now that's something new

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 1 November 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

I can't pick between Roadrunner or Hallogallo.
Also, I'd vote for The Light That Will Cease To Fail over any of these.

OTM, this is the Modern Lovers track I listen to the fucking least.

I Love Stickam (wanko ergo sum), Saturday, 1 November 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

"Roadrunner" is a song about enjoying the freedom of the road. "Hallogallo" IS the freedom of the road in the form of a song. Or something.

human cactus (latebloomer), Saturday, 1 November 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

forget the modern lovers version, the long '76 single version with the long monologue about the pine trees late at night is where it's at

J.D., Saturday, 1 November 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

Hallogallo wins for me, cause I like the rest of the record so much.

Owen Pallett, Saturday, 1 November 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

when I'm fucked up and feel like dancing, and maybe falling on my ass, I'll go with "sister ray" or "roadrunner"

nicky lo-fi, Sunday, 2 November 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

I walked by the stop 'n' shop
then I drove by the stop 'n' shop
I liked that much better than walkin' by the stop 'n' shop
'Cos I had the radio on

I know, right?, Sunday, 2 November 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago)

"Roadrunner" doesn't really belong here because it's only four minutes long. "Jenny Ondioline" is a cover version of "Hallogallo" (albeit a great one), so that leaves Neu vs Velvets. I always liked the first few minutes of "Sister Ray" the best, and "Hallogallo" is pretty much eleven minutes of that, so:

"Hallogallo" > "Sister Ray" > "Jenny Ondioline
-> "Roadrunner" (separate category)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 2 November 2008 12:22 (seventeen years ago)

The real motorik VU song, at least for me, is "What Goes On" - especially in uts Live 1969 incarnation. "Jenny Ondioline" is basically a mix between that version and "Hallogallo".

p.s. need to do the definitive motorik mixtape, now...

Marco Damiani, Sunday, 2 November 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, What Goes On might win over Jenny Ondioline, (that live version is possibly my favourite piece of music... ever) but that wasn't in the poll!

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 2 November 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

'roadrunner' being in a separate category doesn't make it any less awesome.

stereolab, on the other hand, sound polished and dated (in a bad way) in this company. 'hallogallo' arrived fully formed, it didn't need to get all 90s-ized.

if anything could beat the VUs it'd be neu!, man this is a tough one

psychgawsple, Sunday, 2 November 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

"what goes on" is the best VU song and i would vote for it over any song in any poll ever

Oh come on people! Roadrunner placed number 3 in our song poll of the entire 1970s, and now it's getting crushed Neu!?! For crying out loud, that's not even the best Neu instrumental! Geez louise!!!!!!

kornrulez6969, Friday, 7 November 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

best winner, Roadrunner shoulda been next, it was all O_o after that really.

I know, right?, Friday, 7 November 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't see this poll earlier, so I missed my chance to vote for "Roadrunner".

o. nate, Friday, 7 November 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

Wow!

Roadrunner is last...but it's one of the best songs of the 70's according to the ILX poll.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Friday, 7 November 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

Geir!

I believe you would love (OK, like) Jenny Ondioline. It's motorik, sure, but with melody and stuff.

Mark G, Friday, 7 November 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

Man, Neu! has been kicking ärsche in the polls department recently, defeating all my favourites easily - they'll probably overtake Kraftwerk one of these days! (Me, I think they're "OK".)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 7 November 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

it's not exactly "last"...it's basically a dead tie for second. xp

Kevin Keller, Friday, 7 November 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Roadrunner doesn't really belong in here anyway.

Matt DC, Friday, 7 November 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)
