I don't even remember more than half of these myself. Off to youtube!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 November 2008 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

I remember Rob Sheffield (I think) in Details reviewing the album on which the last single on the list appears: "If she really wanted to shock her mama, she should try to take mama's executive producer credit away."

Anyway: "Out of the Blue" is sublime: the tempo is just right (it's easy to imagine a band strumming on guitars the synth part coming after every verse), and she really does sound like the romance is out of the blue -- like every girl of 16 or whatever realizing another crush. "Shake Your Love" and "Only In My Dreams" nip at its rear.

As for the ballads: "Lost In Your Eyes" is kinda gross; but I do like the chord change in the second part of the "Foolish Beat" chorus.

"Foolish Beat" was actually a beautiful song.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 7 November 2008 01:10 (sixteen years ago)

I love you that you did this poll. "Shake Your Love" wins here for how perfectly it captures the cusp between adolescence and young adulthood. John Leland wrote a canonical piece about her in Spin which centered around a string on the top front of her blouse. Think the masses would scarf up a Leland anthology?

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 7 November 2008 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

Out of the blue, is, as stated above by Alfred, a sublime and beautiful song.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Friday, 7 November 2008 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

"Foolish Beat" was actually a beautiful song by George Michael called "Careless Whisper".

"Only in My Dreams" without peer...

Mr. Que, Friday, 7 November 2008 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

So sorry to disappoint you.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 7 November 2008 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Friday, 7 November 2008 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

you're the one who can't understand irony!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 7 November 2008 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

and it IS sublime, John Leland agrees, so stfu.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 7 November 2008 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

There was a properly brilliant remix of Electric Youth in which her voice was reversed and all kinds of ganja was mixed through.

Mr. Que prefers Deborah Gibson.

P.S. Rob Tannenbaum (I think) wrote a fantastic review of Anything is Possible for the Village Voice. Anyone ever read it?

P.P.S. I went as Debbie Gibson from the cover of Out of the Blue for Halloween one year.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 8 November 2008 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

Lamont Dozier (co)wrote and produced most of Anything is Possible.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 8 November 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

The only thing in common between "Foolish Beat" and "Careless Whisper" is the "I can never love again" phrase. The melodies are completely different, the only thing they have in common is that both were ballads, and in a minor key. And, yes, maybe some of the syncopations are a bit similar, but rhythm isn't important.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 8 November 2008 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

Aw big hug.

Funny this should pop up five years later. I was just sorting through some 12 inch singles in my basement last night, including the "Only In My Dreams" remix. Still love it.
