Ramones vs. AC/DC

You know the drill.

They both came from the mid-70s, forged their own aesthetic, and repeated it over and over. In their own way, both re-calibrated rock for punk/metal consumption, yet they existed in parallel universes. Who pwns Who?

Hardest poll ever.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 November 2008 08:40 (seventeen years ago)

AC/DC, because of the "Highway To Hell" and "Back In Black" albums.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 3 November 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

bah, I say! mutt lange killed AC/DC...the man has a horrible production style.

tempted to say ramones, because AC/DC went to shit once brian johnson joined, and this state of affairs has defined them for a long time. however, in truth, the purple patch for both bands was relatively short and occurred early on in their careers.

their numerous highs and arguably more numerous lows are on a par with each other, so it comes down to who I listen to more – and, more specifically, "it's alive" vs "if you want blood..." – and these days, it's the DC.

m the g, Monday, 3 November 2008 11:35 (seventeen years ago)

Very hard call, particularly as AC/DC were one of the first bands I discovered all by myself on the radio. I probably grin just as broadly when I encounter either band's music by chance, but in the end I have more Ramones records, listen to them more often, and know them better. So, I'll go with the R.A.M.O.N.E.S.

Soukesian, Monday, 3 November 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

'70s AC/DC > '70s Ramones > '80s Ramones > '80s AC/DC > stuff they both did later

AC/DC wins.

xhuxk, Monday, 3 November 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

AC/DC, by a big margin

Bill Magill, Monday, 3 November 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm...i am sort of surprising myself by voting for the ramones. i love both though. but the ramones seem like, i dunno....bigger than ac/dc or more, something that i don't feel like explaining.

RAMONES x 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

z "R" s (Z S), Monday, 3 November 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry. Still, if I could quantify

1. critical acclaim for a band (CA)
2. popular support for band through album sales, merchandise and touring (PS)
3. personal opinion for a band (PO)

My (CA+PS)/PO ratio would be off the fucking charts with AC/DC.

z "R" s (Z S), Monday, 3 November 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

But by dividing by your PO for a band, the more you like them the smaller their result would be!

Mark G, Monday, 3 November 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

In my case,

CA = 10 (out of 10)
PS = 10 (out of 10)
PO = 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000002 (out of 10)

(10+10) / 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000002

SCIENTIFIC PROOF

z "R" s (Z S), Monday, 3 November 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

But by dividing by your PO for a band, the more you like them the smaller their result would be!

This may be true. In fact, it is true. But I didn't mention that at the END, you invert the answer!

z "R" s (Z S), Monday, 3 November 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

AC/DC, more songs that mean more to me. And I guess just more songs, which since both bands were pretty consistent (and consistently great), more = better.

Euler, Monday, 3 November 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

"but the ramones seem like, i dunno....bigger than ac/dc or more, something that i don't feel like explaining."

Replace AC/DC and ramones and vice versa and this is exactly how I feel. AC/DC just seems bigger to me. The Ramones seem like kids stuff after their debut, in my opinion (which I know is not a popular view).

Bill Magill, Monday, 3 November 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

all of my reasons for preferring the Ramones to AC/DC are detailed in this thread

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

Ramones is a little more diverse in style, AC/DC is musically stronger. It's a draw for me, since both are respectable bands.

Vision, Monday, 3 November 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

lolz "respectable"

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 November 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

honest, I find "lolz" the most stupid reaction I human being can show. It's not respectable, you know.

Vision, Monday, 3 November 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

most stupid= not respectable either
make that a stupidest

Vision, Monday, 3 November 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure you want to invite attempts to outstupid "lolz", but if it has to go there, it has to go there.

z "R" s (Z S), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

haha the sock made a funny

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

The funny thing is that when I was a teenager I used to say that Ramones was music for stupid people, much to the chagrin of some of my friends. OTOH, even Joey Ramone at his most catatonic could come up with something better than "lolz".

RE sock: see the above about "lolz".

Vision, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

you were funnier when you were making stuff up about the basic, mathematical standards of beauty underpinning all music

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

"Making up" stuff about the mathematical standards of music.... Hmmmm
So what you trying to tell me is that you're not stupid, just ignorant. Is that it?

Vision, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

pot::kettle

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

You mean the basic music theory has no mathematical foundations, is that it?

Vision, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

you mean that

Vision, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

no I mean that the basic mathematical underpinnings of music vary from one musical culture to the next

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

about the most accurate generalization you can make is that all music can be expressed mathematically. beyond that, there are no hard and fast rules that apply.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

For me it's AC/DC, and always will be. I like the Ramones, and while I'll readily admit that I haven't heard nearly as much of their music as I have of AC/DC's, the songs I have heard tend to feel very samey. To be fair, I've only really heard the songs on the Ramones Mania compilation, but those are their hits and should be the very best the band has to offer, right? I honestly have trouble telling a lot of Ramones songs apart. To me, AC/DC's hits feel much more distinct, much less their album tracks. You would never mistake "TNT" for "Let There Be Rock," or "You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Thunderstruck."

(which you're probably skimming already)

Sorry OP for this slight detour, please carry on with the Ramones vs AC/DC thing

Vision, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago)

Ramones are smarter, funnier, more tragic, more versatile, with a broader range of reference-points and a better developed sense of iconography, plus I-IV-V pop hooks >>> 12 bar blues.

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

haha you fucking moron those are all for western music

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

or did you skip all the parts about just intonation and different scales and temperaments ad infinitum - like I was saying, just because music can be expressed mathematically does not mean that all music is based on the same principles.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but if the songs all sound the same, none of that really matters, does it?

Live and Let Die Krupps (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

Western common practice music usually cannot be played in just intonation, even when it is confined to a single key.

I mean what does that tell you.

Yellow flag, off-topic, lose 5 yards.

Live and Let Die Krupps (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but if the songs all sound the same, none of that really matters, does it?

arguing that AC/DCs songs DON'T all sound the same is a little "uh waht" to me. barring the odd bagpipe solo (lolz), every song has the exact same instrumentation, production style, lyrical themes (ie, fucking, with special attention given to double entendres), and interchangeable chord progressions, all falling within yr standard blues-rock tempos. Highway to Hell does sound a lot like TNT or If You Want Blood or any countless others.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

really the only difference in AC/DC songs is the tempo and the hooks. And they are good at hooks I don't deny it. Ramones were better at it though.

I think this really does come down to me preferring I-IV-V pop progressions over 12-bar blues though.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

wtf - 12-bar blues IS 1-4-5 !

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

I admit I am typin fast and not explainin myself well here... I guess I'm thinking more of the differences between major scales and blues scales (ie major vs. pentatonic)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

haha in my high school band that was the difference between playing a pentatonic solo in key and playing it three frets down

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:57 (seventeen years ago)

shakey i like the ramones better too but you are treading on some thin hongro ice with this stuff!!!!!

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not trying to perpetuate the digression here, but Vision & Shakey Mo: If you haven't already, you should look into the book Temperament by Stuart Isacoff -- an examination of the evolotion of various Western and n0n-Western musical scales, the fundemental underpinning of mathematics (specifically of the Pythagorean strain, if I recall correctly) & other interesting things like the relationship between various scale modes and their influence on different forms of architecture. Etc. Not sure what all this has to do with AC/DC vs. The Ramones, as both are about as straight-ahead, no-frills 4/4 as you can get, but whatevs.

Pillbox, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

Your frantic and shakey internet crash course will not do, nor will your attempts to rephrase what you said. Western music has certain scales which we have grown used to. Other musical traditions can be read in terms of specific mathematical relations as well. You denied that, remember? That'd be a good subject for a thread actually (music theory).

Pillbox, it is a fantastic book, I know it, and since you mention it let me also refer to most of Charles Rosen's books, where this subject is mentioned with different degrees of depth. I really do stop here, sorry Pillbox.

Vision, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

are you serious? this could easily be used as ammunition against the ramones as well. they have hundreds of songs that sound virtually identical by the same standards you are using.

BYE! GOOD (latebloomer), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

I heart Motorhead (I even named my hamster Lemmy), but AC/DC are one of the few bands that have managed to consistently stay in my top 10 all time favorites.

Live and Let Die Krupps (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

I gotta give AC/DC the edge for their rhythm section. Both rhythm sections swing, but AC/DC's swings juuuuust a little wider and deeper.

Ramones without a doubt, although these days I'm content enough to mainly stick to their first few albums rather than wade through their 80s/90s output (which is totally worth doing for anyone that's not done it before though, there's plenty of gems in amongst the more average-y stuff).

I've tried to get into Motorhead and Thin Lizzy, but so far they haven't really clicked beyond the most obvious songs/albums (same with Deep Purple). Whereas as far as my listening habits go, AC/DC and Ramones remain a satisfyingly monolithic body of work.

CCR rulesl, but they're a different kind of band.
