Keep seeing the name mentioned. Am intrigued. Should I be?

Nick Southall, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New "you can buy his album HERE" answers, please...

Nick Southall, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Here' being the UK, specifically Exeter.

Nick Southall, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you should be intrigued.

new album 'my way' is just out on force inc. you can get it here.

enjoy, it's fab!

stirmonster, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i've a feeling that link is a dud.

if so - it was meant to take you here -

boomkat or if that's still a dud -

stirmonster, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a guy from Canada, before he made micro house, now he's more like housey version of Avalanches = BRILLIANT!!!!

cvrc, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boomkat link

cuba libre (nathalie), Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boomkat is the place to go, they seem to get new releases quicker. According to other sources Akufen - My Way is set for release in the UK on June 17th.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, akufen is indeed from canada montreal. a very fine introduction into the world of montreal microhouse and funky clicks'n cuts is the compilation Montreal Smoked Meat (review over here). Also out on force inc.

theo ploeg, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Please note though that while My Way is pretty great it's not nearly as adventurous as you want to think it is before you put it in.)

nabisco%%, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's pretty spiff, he is. Abbreviated vocal samples as texture = useful.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, he's really really good...but he's STILL not as good as Todd Edwards, who's been doing the same thing longer

M Matos, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In a funny way I like Akufen most when he's not going crazy with the disjointed micro-samples. My favourite tracks on My Way are "Even White Horizons" and "Skidoos", where the cut-ups are much more subtle - instead of being glamourously bizarre, it's more tender, the sounds ricocheting around your headspace in a dance of courtly love.

Tim, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm with you there tim - sometimes it get's a little too crazy for repeated listening - i like it when he gets deeeeeeper. i still don't hear any todd edwardisms in there though.

stirmonster, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The album is godlike....But, every time I hear a sample snippet that sounds like a Todd Edwards helium sigh, I just wish he would repeat it rather than turning the Akufen radio dial. I know I'll end up reaching for Prima Edizione and indulging myself.

However, on "Little Hop of Horror" from the Clickhop comp, the guitar loop over cheesy hip-hop beat is intoxicating and unlike anyone else (except for maybe DNTEL's "Last Songs"). Maybe the slower tempo makes it easier for me to process and enjoy the pretty bits.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"i'm with you there tim - sometimes it get's a little too crazy for repeated listening - i like it when he gets deeeeeeper."

Or maybe it's just that when he's doing the crazy microsamples stuff he's restricted to a somewhat limited emotional range (eg. craziness?). Which is why it's odd that he puts so many of those tracks in a row (though the lurching coda in "Heaven Can Wait" is ultra-fab).

Tim, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anybody heard Jan Jelinek's Farben collection yet? (I have no idea if Jelinek is 'microhouse' or not, but his last rec sure was purty.)

Andrew L, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why do herbert/akufen etc have this sampling/sound specific agenda, and obsess about where they get their sounds from, and yet always sounds like having captured their noises, they'll just fit it into any bog standard house structure. my problem is that they dont seem too interested in rhythym...sometimes they'll pull it off, and the result is something really good to dance to (one of the only convincing arguments for using the 4/4 structure in addition to really heavy kick drum sounds) - 'deck the house' for instance, but a lot of the time, it seems like they are so worried about their seperate ideas about sampling, that they forget either to make a) home listening music, or b) club tunes...

thats why my favoutite tune on 'my way' is 'heaven can't wait'

ambrose, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm listening to "Perfect Love" and thinking this, but smart fella got there first.

I'm sorry, someone has to do this every time Akufen is mentioned, it's like the law or something:

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

man todd edwards is so good.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, the comparison is obvious, but i get something TOTALLY different out of akufen.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

todd edwards is a lot less staccato, doesn't have that radio tuning thing going on as much. it's sort of like that nsync video with dancing while your outfit keeps rotating through a bunch of fly stuff.

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

could someone recommend an edwards CD or 12" to start with?

'deck the house' was an outstanding single, yup.

(Jon L), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

look for edwards remixes of st. germain's "alabama blues" (the dub and the vocal are nearly completely different), which are probably his masterpieces.

his first full on mix cd is very good, if a little wearying.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm into wearying, though. My only problem with Oswald's 'Plexure' is that it isn't six hours long.

Thanks for the lead.

(Jon L), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

look out for 'Prima Edizione' which is much less wearying than the 'full on' discs.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 14 December 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

also he does production *and* lead vocal on Daft Punk's "Face to Face" from 'Discovery'.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 14 December 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I second the Full On recommendation.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Alabama Blues" and his remix of "Walk Away" are Todd's two really stunning moments. Everything else, while frequently great, tends to sound like a rehearsal of those two tracks (which is perhaps one of the inherent risks of being a one trick pony, even if that trick is one of the best ever)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 December 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

that's interesting because were they not just using the same formula as his even earlier remixes and tracks e.g. 'Saved My Life', the fabulous 'Steal My heart' and his remix of Wildchild's 'Jump To My Beat' which i loved a lot. i think the Phoenix remix is as good as the St Germain one also - just something about it's pattern that gets me a little more.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny, I've just discovered Akufen courtesy his excellent remix of Massive Attack's "Special Cases" - track it down if you possibly can, I found it on slsk.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the second full on is good too, but yeah kind of a big cake to eat at once. though check "i hear him"--kate bush vocal sample!

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

my fave Todd track is still his remix of Mantra's "Away"--disco efflourvescence deluxe, gorgeous in and of itself, amazingly long-lasting (I've never heard it once without immediately playing it again) and I suspect--shoot me--no Jesus stuff. and I LIKE the Jesus stuff--the "you saved my life!" bits at the top of "Savior Tonight" nearly brought me to tears the first time I heard it, and I love the fact that he is so fucking devout, so into God and so shamelessly trying to convert you the listener. but "Away" tops all for me, maybe because it's the first time I ever heard his stuff.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

and I'm kind of thinking I might vote for Full On Vol. 2 in P&J this year because I DID play it a lot and I DO love it. plus it's one disc not two and therefore less wearying than 1 by default.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Akufen and Shannon at CCA this Friday. Broadcast on RadioMagnetic too.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Akufen DJing only (which isn't anywhere near as exciting)

3underscore (___), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh - is that definite? The publicity makes it sound like he's performing.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

shame that dancing at the CCA feels a bit like dancing in your school gym hall.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone ive spoken to says something different

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Different to each other or different to that flyer?

£10-£14 would seem an awful lot for the CCA if it's just a DJ set.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah,

the placement of its "(LIVE)" allows for much speculation.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a really vague flyer.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. But it would be strange for the headliner to be just DJing and the second fiddle act to be a live set, no? Or maybe not.

What an intriguing tale this is.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps I will pop into the CCA on my way into work tomorrow and see if I can smell which way the wind is blowing.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw a show like this last Saturday. Laptop shows are generally considered lamer in electronic music circles so it's not shocking that the DJ would be the headliner.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I read it as akufen not live.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know anything about Mike Shannon. Is he any good?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Akufen has great sound, but I don't like the programming of what I've heard. Steady 4/4 house annoys the shit out of me.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw him at sonar in tokyo and he was dj'ing - old underground resistance / detroit records and a few canuck glitchy things. it was very so so. he said he was bored with performing live and had retired from it and would only dj out from now on.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it's deffo, deffo, deffo a dj set in glasgow.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Shannon's good, if you like straight 4/4 techno (unless he's changed his style recently). His work is quite straightforward, nothing particularly inventive but it works quite well. It's not as "micro" as most of the other Montreal artists -- maybe it's because he's a Toronto ex-pat :)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone know what that Melchior-esque track, that starts roughly a quarter of the way in on the Mutek podcast here is?

mehlt, Friday, 27 March 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

And I am so excited to hear new material by him soon!

mehlt, Friday, 27 March 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

why hasn't he released anything in years?

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 08:14 (fifteen years ago)

Because he was supposed to have an album coming out in 2009 that never came out, but nevertheless is touring the world with a live show full of his new material, first debuted at last May at Mutek, I believe, and which I shall see again (luckily this time without a fever) in a week and a half :)

I'm looking forward to hearding the new Horror Inc. LP. Sounds quite chilled. Anyone heard it?

mmmm, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

Very interested in this despite having no idea what it's going to sound like.

Is just going to be a vinyl release? Don't especially want to pay a fortune for a 3LP.

ed.b, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 23:55 (twelve years ago)

That said, seeing him dj last Saturday was a total treat.

mmmm, Sunday, 24 November 2013 17:04 (twelve years ago)

hmm. basically sounds like it's ten years old. which is not necessarily a bad thing but i don't really feel like i need to listen to something that sounds like this ever again. it just sort of skips along doing what you expect it to do and is neither jacking nor melodically interesting.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 24 November 2013 17:25 (twelve years ago)

Totally agree, which is maybe just to say that I don't get it... (Perhaps strangely, as a huge marc leclair stan).
