Did the pointless sax solo ever make a comeback?

In all the hububbub of the 80s revival this decade, has anyone made use of the pointless, blaring sax solo? I want to soundtrack my cool, sexy nights with some hot saxxx, but I don't feel like digging out Hall & Oats.

Any contemporary examples of the sax solo come to mind?

i don't understand why a sax solo has to be pointless

Surmounter, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:50 (sixteen years ago)

it doesn't have to be, but in the context of popular music it often is.

ian, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

I'm talking about sax solos that have no real purpose or function in the song; like, the song's doing it's own thing blah blah blah, and then out of nowhere a sax solo is copy and pasted into the mix. and it's almost always blaring.

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

well, burt, i think the answer to your question is no, the pointless sax solo never made a comeback.

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 04:01 (sixteen years ago)

all i'm sayin is this is gonna happen in a minute if it hasn't already, this comeback

Surmounter, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

all of life's best moments are best punctuated with a wacky sax solo. the last scene of my life on this earth is going to feature me walking down the street while a sax solo plays the fade out

I think the real question is whether the pointless euphonium solo ever made its debut

great sax soloing in Chromeo '100%', not pointless - I would say the same thing about Springsteen and the inimitable Clarence Clemens.

Pillbox, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 05:06 (sixteen years ago)

Careless Whisper is an awesome sax solo with a pointless song. Ok, an awesome sax solo and vocal chorus with pointless verses.

What's that other big sax anthem from around the same time -- the one where the sax goes "ta NAA NAA NAna NA-EE-YAAAAAAAAAAA/ta NAAA NAAA NAna NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"?

Greatest scene in any movie ever. It's like a big "fuck you" to Orson Welles.

three months pass...

bump for my rediscovery of Steely Dan. Some truly smooooooooooth sax solos to enjoy there.

burt_stanton, Thursday, 19 February 2009 04:53 (sixteen years ago)

note: I grew up with Steely Dan in the house, so I never really got into that stupid yacht rock thing that cultureless hipsters from totally boring and norm backgrounds with no real personalities of their own went nuts over. thus I'm probably a few years late here.

Lie Bot, Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:31 (sixteen years ago)

I don't see sax solos as pointless. For instance, the sax solo in Spandau Ballet's "True" is a wonderful moment.

You're a world-acknowledged expert in pointlessness too

bemoaning the lack of sax in the yoof-oriented music of today
sax as a retro throwback element to be taken ironicaly
yoofs don't know what they're missing

never made a comeback as you can spend all £200 and get a keyboard that does all the perfect 80s sounds with very little effort but you actually need to learn how to play a sax. 20 fags a day indie pipes probably arent up to it.

My favourite pointless 80s sax solo is on echo beach
