I don't care if the rest of the song is a little bit hokey, anyone who wants to argue against those two big fuckoff guitar chords that run throughout the verses of "Jailhouse Rock" is a bigger fool than I.

d-_-b (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:28 (sixteen years ago)

(all) Shook up, for beieng effortless...

Mark G, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:28 (sixteen years ago)

I'm torn between the Everlys and Sam Cooke but I think I'm gonna vote Cooke.

Nothing has transpired (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:29 (sixteen years ago)

i have never heard any of these songs! (apart from that osmotic kind of way that you hear standards like 'all shook up', i know how it goes but i don't think i've ever listened properly to the original.) actually i don't know who any of those people are except elvis.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'm voting Everlys because Cooke has songs I like more than "You Send Me."

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:41 (sixteen years ago)

lex, have you seriously heard of Sam Cooke? A Change Is Gonna Come? Wonderful World? Cupid?

Dorianlynskey, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:41 (sixteen years ago)

Oops, I mean "have you seriously never heard…"

Dorianlynskey, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:41 (sixteen years ago)

Cupid is one of the greatest vocal performances in pop music ever recorded.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:42 (sixteen years ago)

that's what utube's for maybe?

"All Shook Up" just edging out Cooke, Everly's and "Jailhouse Rawk."

xxxxp

Mum used to play a tonne of Everly Brothers when I was a kid, still hold a soft spot for "Wake Up Little Susie". S'no "Cathy's Clown" but what is?

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:51 (sixteen years ago)

lucky brat.

Ioannis, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:53 (sixteen years ago)

I voted Everlys. I love a bit of Elvis and Sam Cooke but these are not my faves by them.

Lex, listen to Sam Cooke. He's amazing. And whoever said "Cupid" is one of the best vocal performances is OTM!

the next grozart, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:54 (sixteen years ago)

Lex, you missed the words "RIGHT NOW"

d-_-b (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 10:59 (sixteen years ago)

This is too early, really. But "You Send Me" is great. It was actually the early soul singers who, to a larger extent than the rockers, managed to stretch beyond the boring and overused 12 bar blues.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 11:04 (sixteen years ago)

While we wait for other developments on this thread, here's a picture of Tab Hunter:

Yep. Just two bros, broing out.

I'm with Rev: "Jailhouse Rock."

Tammy

Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 11:17 (sixteen years ago)

wiki trivia of the day: Warner Bros Records was established for the purpose of releasing Tab Hunter recordings

d-_-b (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 12:05 (sixteen years ago)

There's a good book about the history of WB Records called Exploding by Stan Cornyn that's worth reading if you're into that kind of historical stuff, Rev (or anyone): http://www.amazon.com/Exploding-Highs-Heroes-Hustlers-Warner/dp/0380814773/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225801759&sr=8-1

Elvis Presley, "All Shook Up"
The Everly Brothers, "Wake Up Little Susie"
Elvis Presley, "Jailhouse Rock"
Sam Cooke, "You Send Me"

blargh this is harder than it looks

Edward III, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not much of an Elvis fan, but I had to go w/ "Jailhouse Rock." Strong field.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

I picked Sam Cooke over the Everly Bros, but "Jailhouse Rock" does, in fact, rock.

Brad C., Tuesday, 4 November 2008 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

All Shook Up

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'm voting for Tab Hunter because Young Love, in spite of being a cheesefest, is a lovely melody and beautifully sung.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:36 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 6 November 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

"All Shook Up." And seconding that Stan Cornyn book, which is hilarious.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 6 November 2008 01:15 (sixteen years ago)

I'm torn between the Everlys and Sam Cooke but I think I'm gonna vote Cooke.

Ditto. There are Cooke songs I like more than "You Send Me," but I don't know if any of them made #1, so he gets my vote here just in case. But damn, those acoustic power chords in "Little Susie"...

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 6 November 2008 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

Elvis Presley, "All Shook Up"

ban or astroban? (Curt1s Stephens), Thursday, 6 November 2008 01:36 (sixteen years ago)

I listen to that more tahn any other Elvis song

ban or astroban? (Curt1s Stephens), Thursday, 6 November 2008 01:36 (sixteen years ago)

Yikes: I don't like a single one of these songs.

With a little bit of gold and a Peja (bernard snowy), Friday, 7 November 2008 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

"Teddy Bear" is the weakest of the three Elvis tracks in my estimation, but I'm surprised it didn't at least pick up a vote or two.

¯\(°_o)/¯ (The Reverend), Friday, 7 November 2008 07:28 (sixteen years ago)

1957 = a great year if only cause I was conceived and born then (snuck out just a couple days before new years). can't imagine my parents were uh 'inspired' by any of these songs, though.
